-more useful.
-more loyal.
-better outdoor companions.
Cats are
-better indoor companions.
-cuddlier (just on account of being softer - having a dog's paw touch your face is awful, having a cat's paw touch your face is pleasant - and lighter).
-easier to maintain (no walks regardless of weather three times a fucking day, no suffering when left alone for more than 4 hours, all the entertainment a cat is ever going to need is a street-side window, cats can clean themselves).
-cheaper (both initially and on upkeep).
-causing less noise (no barking, no howling, no clanking on every step because they can't retract their fucking claws).
Both are prone to cause injuries - where cats may react aggressively more often, dogs can cause much greater damage.
A difference in "intelligence" is brought up regularly, but this is a really stupid metric. Yes, it's easier to teach dogs, but can you really call a lifeform that goes "yes massa, you tell me to sit and i sit. yes massa, you tell me to lie down and i lie down". Personally that's the mindset of a slave and I can't respect that as intelligence. Every intelligent lifeform regularly goes "fuck you, you're not the boss of me, i lie down whenever i please" and I totally respect that.
In the end - both have different appeals. And with both species the difference between a well-kept and well-trained individual and a neglected, untrainted individual is staggering. I hate dogs, but I totally see why people would want one.

People project their desire for affection onto cats because they want to believe they adopted little cuddly, love-machines when, in fact, they adopted animals that don't really give a fuck about them. Cats just operate on instinct. They want food, warmth, safety, and control. They do what they want regardless of their owner's happiness or desires.
Cats are assholes, and cat owners LOVE that about them. I've spent the night at houses where the cats jumped right on top of me in the middle of the night. And if I closed the bathroom door, they would meow because they believed they had the right to go where they pleased. The kind of person that tolerates (or encourages) that behavior from a pet isn't necessarily mentally ill, but they definitely have low self-esteem. They think the cats just want to be loved, but really it's them who want to be loved. The cat doesn't give a shit. You could fall dead in front of it and it would just leave.
Now, I didn't say anything about dogs, but they're different in the fact that they have been more thoroughly domesticated for utilities. Apart from regular families, dogs are used by farmers, shepherds, hunters, police, and military. Any real behavioral issue with dogs can be probably be attributed to bad owners (or no owners at all). You call it slavery, but dogs want to work; they want to stay mentally engaged. Good, happy dogs are raised by confident humans who have the care and patience to raise them right. They recognize complex human emotions, and they will stay by them if the human dies.
But, I agree that small dogs aren't actually dogs - they're pests. Rat terriers can be vicious little workers, but none I'd want to hang out with.

Rubbing scent onto each other is social behaviour just like licking each other. They evolved to increase bonding. It's the same shit that holds together a pride of lions, they literally do the same face rubbing to mark each other with scent. You make it seem simpler than it is by ignoring the purpose and consequence.
Now if we're being totally honest and break down every behaviour (like you seem to be keen on), then there is no altruistic or affectionate behaviour whatsoever. Not in cats, not in dogs, not in humans. We never actually act a certain way because of how it makes *others* feel, but always because of how it makes *ourselves* feel.
A human doesn't eat because of hunger, but because it feels good to eat when hungry. A cat doesn't rub its face on a human because of affection or because of any intent of marking the human, but because it makes the cat feel good to rub its face on something. By claiming the cat just wants to rub off its scent, you're still projecting purpose, where there is none from the point of view of the cat. Now while this is the closest to the truth we may get - it's also pretty fucking pointless to talk in those terms. We *want* to ascribe purpose. But if we go down that path of enriching the world, I don't see the difference between "it wants to be affectionate" and "it wants to rub off scent". Both are useful lies with a grain of truth.
