This is a photochrom, a colorization of a photo of America's first pre-dreadnought. The USS Texas nicknamed "Old Hoodoo" for the various mishaps that occurred during the early years of her service and possibly for some of the problems that made life more of a chore for her crew and the problematic "en echelon" layout of her main armament.
She, along with the USS Maine (the one that exploded and sank in Havana harbor providing the excuse to start the Spanish-American War) were built in response to Brazil overtaking America as the premiere naval power of the new world by purchasing the ironclad battleship Riachuelo from the Samuda Brothers firm in the UK.
