Don't be intimidated by it's user guide; it's quite helpful. If you're looking to make your setup look like those edgelords on /g/, I would suggest getting i3-gaps and i3-blocks (to replace i3-bar)
Configuring it the way you like may take a bit of time for matching your aesthetics taste, but it is fairly straightforward through its plaintext config file. I've been using i3 for half a year now and can't think of switching back to using a DE.

You can't make anything transparent in 10 themes, it'll just default to white, you can make it match the rest of the menu and look transparent tho.
If it's not changing at all make sure you're changing ImmersiveStartDark::Menu if you're using the W10 dark theme.

I don't really like taskbar icons either. I can't seem to find a way to remove them on explorer shell, the taskbar blanker AHK script only seems to work properly on a few applications. I'll give Mint a go, then. When I tried installing Fedora and Antergos, Displayport via my GPU would work through BIOS and a few lines of code while Linux booted up, then 1 second after the GUI would pop up, black screen. I've only been able to get display from my motherboard in Linux thus far.

I can never understand why anyone would want a giant clock on their desktop that you would need to minimize and move windows to see when you have a perfectly good taskbar that displays the time all the time without ever needing to switch windows.
