Previous Thread - >>3038586

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Please forgive me for not knowing what I'm really talking about but the picture on my Trinitron is tilted slightly, just enough that it's noticable. Is this normal or should I look into fixing it somehow?

On another note am I always supposed to see overscan in stuff like Genesis games or is that unusual too? Once again I'm sorry for sounding like an idiot.

Those are BNC connectors. Every PVM has those and only those.

For RGB, you need a SCART -> BNC breakout cable. Or you can modify your consoles to output the signal over RCA jacks. You'll want pic related for the second option.

If you're just being cheap you can just use s-video cable, but it's a waste of a PVM

>>

You can fix it by actually opening it up and adjusting the yoke, but you can seriously mess it up too, it's also pretty dangerous so I'd just deal with it unless it's pretty crazy. Some of the higher end trinitrons have a tilt adjustment in the menu so look around.

Usually it's not normal to see the overscan unless whoever had it before made the picture smaller to fit more on it like I do. You can fix it by adjusting the geometry in the hidden service menu.

Overscan/Underscan is a bit normal in my experience for the Genesis. Stuff like Sonic 2 at the very least have a bit of the background layer visible in most situations.

>>3061985
I actually found out, shortly taking that picture, that since there wasn't any PAL optimization done to Keio 2 EU, it runs absolutely perfectly on an NTSC system if you just patch the region coding.

>>3062452
For making use of their already existing cables, those would work fine for composite.

crt is dead

getting them half dead (from shipping) through ebay is your only option now unless you live in very urban areas like cali or ny (to find them on craigslist)
HD crt's seem to be alive and kicking but for PVMs and non-HD component sets it looks very grim

there are literally no sd sets in my area. Should I take my Old Sanyo in to get serviced? (flat tube ypbpr in) $50 to set purity, convergence, and geometry adjusted and service menu optimized? picture still looks good and i have the remote.

Called "bias" in the menus. IF that's what's wrong. "Gain" is the amplification, "bias" is the background level. That's how you adjust individual colours within the brightness/contrast settings.

Well, as briefly chronicled in the repair thread >>3063136 my wonderful BVM-2010P has left us for a better place, a place abundant in aperture grills and electrons. As the acrid deathsmoke still fills my lungs I remember the first time I saw the mega drive in RGB on you. I remember picking you up from the auction yard battered and bruised and cleaning you up. I enjoyed many games on you in our short time together. I will never have a CRT as great as you. Though you were getting on in years you still had clarity and grace.

So I tried the power again after I had taken all the panels off and it doesn't boot and degauss but makes a 'sizzling' sound and emits more of the smell. If you are in a hurry you can do S-video to get a quick fix of retro action on this monitor. SNES, PSX/PS2, N64 all look great on Sony RGB monitors via S-Video. S-video cables are still easy to come by for these systems as well. Just go to Gamestop and ask for the "Legacy video game A/V cable"

That convergence is super messed up
>>
>>3063529

Sounds like frying bacon?

That's often a dirty, dusty or damaged anode cap, or rust on the shatter hook that makes contact with the anode. If that's the case, the tube isn't building up enough voltage across the dielectric, it's leaking out preferentially into the dag coating. Hence the sound.

Power off, discharge safely, and have look. The cap and glass should be wiped down with IPA, and the hook and anode can be sanded back or wirebrushed clean. Just be careful not to damage the rubber cap, I imagine replacing a damaged one is a pain.
>>
>>3065309
Oh, and the smell is probably ozone. Don't get hooked :)
>>
>>3065309
Oh, and if you are wiping the tube down around the anode, respect the bare glass ring/ring isolated around the anode. Only wipe that bit, and don't keep wiping away at the black dag coating over the bulk of the tube - that's meant to be there. Sometimes it comes off like dirt and grime on older sets.

And for Pete's sake be careful discharging if you've never done it before.
>>
>>3065331
isint that grease around the back of the tube and under the anode cap just Vaseline?
>>
>>3065360
Never heard of vaseline being used. Wouldn't hurt, but I would hardly consider it beneficial, let alone necessary. Anything goopy can go, I can tell you that much. But the graphite coating of the tube needs to stay. Tends to be harder than the grime that builds up but can often still be rubbed away. Cleaning around the cap might be required, but the rest of the tube can stay dirty if it has to.
>>
>>3065167
Sshhh it's just my test monitor on my bench: >>3057317
It's on the list.

I was blown away by the quality, despite my convergence issues. I have only seen VCS via RF, from this exact Atari. It was especially snowy, an issue I never could fix. Hence the svideo mod.
>>
>>3065360
>>3065506
me again.... on reflection, are you sure it's vaseline? Have you seen it on new sets? On older sets the HV lines and flyback have preferentially attracted/created soooooo much particulate matter they're basically black, and that stuff turns into thick grime. Or, possibly, the particles turn some sort of greasy substance like vaseline, that was already there, into black grime.

I've certainly never heard anyone recommend using vaseline or anything like it around the anode cap.
>>
Just a tip, something I discovered that I don't hear talked about much:

If you're trying to get RGB from a PS1, buy some generic 'universal' A/V cables, the kind that have both composite and component leads. Use the composite line as the sync line and the component lines for RGB. Works like a dream, and no need to find a SCART cable and SCART -> BNC adapter. You can use a sync stripper if you really feel the need but I have not seen any difference in video quality.
>>
>>3065560
link to an example?

I thought most of those were unshielded rubbish :) But I might be wrong. I just bought the really cheap component cables from ebay for the fully-populated plug, and made my own :) Amazing the difference good shielding makes.
>>
>>3065519
I'm pretty sure its dielectric grease/silicone grease and if true you can substitute it with Vaseline
>>
>>3065709
Ok, google shows that some manufacturers did use it. I never knew that. It's never been there on any set I've seen, even newer ones. And while the older ones have grime, there's never any distinction between under/inside and outside the anode cap, it's all just black grime.

>>
>>3065560
All fine and good, but composite video as sync sucks ass. I despise SCART because it (if used in the standard way) uses composite video for sync. I am the one who drilled holes in the back of his SNES for RCA jacks to output R/G/B/CSync so I could use normal cables.

The whole screen will move left and right when it gets bright or dark.

Designed a circuit that I think should convert TTL-level sync (obtained by doing something like taking csync from a genesis and putting it into a buffer or both inputs of an AND gate IC like the 7408) and convert it into a more 'normal'/compatible sync signal. That said, not had problems with the 7408 method without this circuit yet, so I've not had a chance to try it out.

AV modded another of my famicoms, this one was in such clean shape (almost flawless controller decal plates, pearly white case) that I didn't want to drill holes in the side of the case. This necessitated replacing the RF modulator/power supply board (the famicom is fucking CRAMPED inside), but it worked out well. Pic.

Using a TRS jack for audio and video output. Hot glue was used to hold the PCB down (no way to screw it in) and to hold the jacks in place on the back. Justifiable use IMO since it didn't substitute for solder or coat any PCB's like a Drakon job.

You discharge it exactly the same way as any other tube - CAREFULLY.

Essentially the glass of the tube acts as a dielectric between the Anode spider and the DAG (aqueous graphite paint) coating the outside. The tube is a massive capacitor, and the dielectric is so effective you can build up 25+ kilovolts between the two. So effective that once discharged the electrons can keep leaking and build up *more* charge, so if you don't handle it for 15 minutes, discharge again.

To discharge it, you connect one side of the capacitor to the other side. There is a ground wire running around the outside of the tube, normally a braided metal thing on springs that's touching the DAG, and you make a connection between that and the shatter hook/anode (under the cap). The best way to do this is with a thick piece of wire. There are lots of guides that tell you to wrap wire around screwdriver, but personally I'd go to a Jaycar and buy stuff that's at least 25A capacity, and then solder that to the blade of a flat-ended screwdriver, and then house the handle of *that* in industrial rubber hose. You want to be as far from the metal of it as possible, and as far from the other end too. You've already soldered an aligator clip to the other end, now connect that to the grounding wire around the tube, first, and ease the screwdriver blade under the rubber of the anode cap. While doing this, steer clear of everything else. Don't let anyone touch you; wear rubber soles; stay away from other wires and anything metal. Keeping your other hand in your pocket is a good idea to begin with, until you remember not to lean on anything around the set. It's a tiny, tiny amount of charge, like a thousandth of a grain of rice worth of energy, but it's at 20+kV so it'll blow you across the room. It almost certainly won't kill you unless you're old and weak, but it'll hurt like blazes and still be pretty serious.

>'connect one side of the capacitor to the other.'
He means this metaphorically, there is no capacitor in the traditional sense. He is telling you to short the anode cap to ground.

Clarification of accurate but somewhat flowery language.
>>
>>3066524

In all likelihood the BVM will have an auto-discharge circuit like newer CRTs do, but you can never be too careful. So you might hear the pop, and you might not. Do it a few times.

Once you're satisfied you touched the metal of the shatter hook with the blade, and other end was connected, peel back the rubber anode cap from one side and have a look. Most shatter hooks are two prongs spring-tensioned into the anode hole, kinda like two tines of a fork bent outwards halfway down. Squeeze them together and remove them from the hole.

If it's another kind of shatter hook, try to figure it out.

And MFG if you do any of this with the power on, you'll kill yourself quick. Make sure of everything first, and do it SLOWLY.

Yes, I am aware. But I was majing sure he knew he wasn't supposed to bridge every electrolytic on the board. 'capacitor' usually refers to traditional capacitors that are only intended to store charge. This is a side effect on CRT's. I was, as I said, clarifying.

>1 Vpp Sync
Why not 0.3Vpp Sync like a normal composite/Y signal?
Also why not filter out the DC offset with a 220µF capacitor?
>>
>>3067030
because DC offset doesn't matter. The NTSC standard specifies everything in Vpp (peak-to-peak voltage). And 1Vpp seems to be the pseudo standard for raw composite sync.
>>
>>3066330
Maybe on the SNES, but the PS1, or at least the SCPH-1001 models seem to do just fine with using composite as sync. I can't tell a difference between the two, though I do only have a 600 line monitor.

Though I guess I could have even used official sony component cables and pulled composite off the jack on the back if i didn't want generic cables.
>>
>>3066392
>squawkers
LMFAO!
>>
>>3067079
>because DC offset doesn't matter.
Because these inputs are designed to take AC coupled signals. That's why a DC offset doesn't have any noticeable effect here.
But using a capacitor for AC coupling can also serve as protection, if mistakenly connected to another output which possibly outputs a rather high voltage and/or allows to draw high current.
For audio it makes it easy to mix it from stereo to mono or reduce the stereo separation and for video it makes it simple to mix S-Video into composite, both can be done without any risk because of the lack of a DC offset.
>The NTSC standard specifies everything in Vpp (peak-to-peak voltage)
The real NTSC standard used to specify everything in IRE (which is another unit for voltage).
Vpp is actually used in technical manuals/specifications.
>And 1Vpp seems to be the pseudo standard for raw composite sync.
>pseudo standard
Now that's a great reason, why use real standards if fully made up pseudo standards can be used instead.
I get the idea that some rather low quality TV sets can sync better to it but that's more like a cheap hack to get it working.
I would at least include alternative value for the last resistor to get 0.3Vpp output and a 220µF capacitor marked with "* Optional, use to remove DC offset".

It depends. Most should take the 60Hz just fine. The problems arise with the colour signal. Some sets display NTSC images in black and white over composite. If you use RGB (which you should, almost all UK TVs with a SCART input support this), you can bypass this issue.

I've had good results on my CRT with RGB, but composite NTSC only displays in black and white. YMMV.

apologies for shitty soldering but pic of adapter mod.
The adapter was connected wrong for MMC5 compatibility (just bridged /A13 and CE on either side) and I also mapped expansion audio onto it.

The two bridged pins on one end of the adapter are okay since both of those go to the unused expansion port on the bottom of a NES. I was too lazy to figure out which one my flash carts were using for audio.

The extra solder everywhere is because I was younger and inexperienced when I did this.

Also note that the space between the CE and A13 pins (blue and green wires) had to be cut with a knife.

After doing this, Castlevania 3 worked. Note that CV3 on the EDN8 worked without this mod because it's MMC5 implementation is absolute dog shit.

Real CV3 carts don't work without this fixed, though.

If you don't need RGB but are satisfied with s-video (trust me, it's only very marginally lower grade than RGB in the case of the 1chip SNES - just as crisp, a little less saturated), just get an old Commodore monitor with Y/C input and a passive S-video adapter.

cmon. do really want a PVM/BVM?
. they make good retro pc monitor solutions, but for me they just are not good Console monitors they usually have mono sound, are usually small (anything over 20 inch is at least 500 dollars.)(and if it isn't 500 and you do get a deal...BRING A FRIEND they are heavy..can you pick a 220 lb cube up. straight-armed?)
I have a 20 incher thats in my garage just because the new RCA I have has really good speakers and built in speaker terminal. and picture is pretty fucking good in S-video.

>>3068121
what
20 inchers weigh less than 100 lb

they arent 500 dollars what the fuck are you smoking

It's not very dangerous unless you're a fuckwit. The deflection yoke is not where the high voltage is.

>>3067825
Would love a BVM, but as they don't seem to come under $100 and I got a PVM-20L5 for under that, I can cope. Still, nice rack.

If EIA 19 inch half-racks weren't so expensive, I'd have one. I have the mounting brackets for my 20L5.

Okay, you can force the GB player into outputting 240p with some homebrew. That's what I'd do. Deinterlacing is a poor solution anyway. And if your scaler has done an electrostatic discharge into you, I'd:
a) run away terribly fast
b) accept you fried the scaler.

That really shouldn't matter. If you want good sound, you don't use built in speakers on any TV/Monitor. Get a separate set of nice stereo speakers.

I was able to live using a pair of harman kardons that came with a dell desktop around 11 years ago. And anyway, yeah, you know why the speakers in pro monitors suck? Three reasons:
1) sound engineers use headphones
2) they are used in rows, each displaying a different tv channel or stream or whatever, and you don't want them all shouting at you at once.
3) Thr speakers have magnetic properties and can impact picture quality.
>>
>>3068170
It hasnt I just accidentaly touched around the power supply area while unplugging it with the top off
Still works fine in 470i mode with the same isse on pseudo 240p

The only gb emu with 240p is wii mednafen that has a doublestrike mode
But unfortunately it halves the image size

If you know another way by all means tell me

My 20 inch 20l5 is 72 pounds and my 1944Q (same size) is 95. The 1944Q is from 1989 and so about 13 years the 20L5's elder, so that somewhat explains the weight difference. Definitely not going to jump to 200 pounds to increase to 25 inches. Only awkwardness of moving increases.

Also, I fucking hate the PSX FFV translation.

Fuck Robert Newton for playing Long John Silver in that Treasure Island movie and cementing all pirates as having that fucking stupid accent.

Okay now I'm really confused.
The picture seems to be tilted a couple degrees counter-clockwise, it's hard to demonstrate in pictures but in scrolling it's extremely noticeable, and messing with the v.angle and other such settings don't seem to do anything to it, other than throwing off the left side of the screen.

oh, and it supports 1080 @ 50i, which I think the Us version doesn't.

Not sure about South American region, but wouldn't be the same unless PAL. Some places are, some aren't. I'm not sure which version was released in europe either. Possibly the DXXL5A but calibrated differently? DXXL5E?

What is the correct color temperate for retro gaming?

I always put it on warm (or very warm if it has it) but recently I read this on neogaf:

>Conventional wisdom is that Japanese CRT monitors used by developers, at least back in the 16/32 bit era, were set to 9300k (Trinitron standard). This means that "neutral" (which is usually more blue than neutral on consumer TVs) or "cool" are (or were) actually more accurate for video gaming in general.

I am using a Trinitron TV. Should I set it to cool?
>>
>>3067953
Never tried an Extron with RGsB - I have a 580xi on my PS2 but I know that with separate sync it needs a clean feed with no video signal multiplexed. i.e an LM1881 (with supporting components/circuit) somewhere between your console and the RGB interface to strip out the video leaving just the sync signal.

Not sure how shmups got it working in that case.

Denon avr 987
Pro studio PS 413 floor stacks
Kenwood satellites and woofer.

Pro studio is rent a center tier but I replaced the china 3 way crossover with a 2 way crossover and a high pass filter. Avr handles the low pass to all and high pass to the sub. Not the best reproduction but will rattle the kitchen cabinets.

I had to fight with the idea of having two monitors on a rack together basically doing the same thing. It seemed pointless but something inside me was screaming rack setup. The TV studio aesthetic is too strong for me to deny. The simplest way I can explain it is that I'm doing it for organizational purposes. Trying to open up my room a bit and make it less cluttered. By doing this I can get rid of my old shelf that was taking up way too much space. When not playing I can stick the rack neatly in a corner.

I've seen your dual setup. I love the look of two PVMs together one portrait one landscape.
>>
Friendly reminder that Consumer Trinitrons are still VERY close to god-tier especially if you are playing from further than 3-4 feet away especially with component cables.

Had a great (and frustrating) night with Time Crisis 1 via PS2 Component cables. Looked fucking aces.
>>
>>3068439
NO.
Use 6500k. That is THE standard. 9300k is not standard, only used in TV showrooms for looks.

His 'conventional wisdom' is a load of BS.
>>
>>3069016
Friendly reminder you don',t need a trinitron to have a nice CRT.

And the 1chip SNES does not encode component.

>>3069405
They all digitally process the image, if that's what you mean.
>>
>>3069427
I see. So what happens if you emulate retro through something like a wii? Still bad? My main concern is scaling/analog to digital conversion which I don't want. If my output signal is 480p through component, would I get latency?
>>
>>3069437
I guess to clarify I'm asking does it post-process the image. Can't play platformers or rythm games with that shit.

480p is not the resolution of old games, you are already scaling it. The TV will probably further scale it to something like 720p or 1080i.
You will get latency with any input and resolution.

A lot of people have a habit of throwing out TRINITRON SONY TVs around my city (glendale ca) I managed to get this one literally for free from the front of my apartment.

People drive around looking for Tvs and just salvage shit, like pic related.

So I'm willing to bet that maybe this one was thrown out with everything still intact and some chump opened it up and took something out from it.

But I don't really know to be honest.

This trinitron in particular can be found around in the streets where I live in, why? I couldn't fucking tell you. but this one works fantastic.
