Well, since I can't pick them all as my favorites, I'll have to go with IV, just for presentation.

Though II (and the associated text adventures) had its moments.

I sincerely hope you goyim played PS1 with the SMSPower patch and in glorious FM synth.

I went for 4 as well, though it pains me to see PS1 without any votes. It's easily the most fun to explore.

2, because of the dungeon design, boss battle theme, and especially the ending.

4 is better in every other way though.

I want to get into this series, but have this obsession to play all games in series in order. And, well, Phantasy Start 1 is pretty harsh to get into. Did it ever get a modern re-release on something outside Master System?
>>
>>2975809
You could play it on the PS2 if you can read Nihongan.
>>
>>2974982
I'd recommend it. It makes setting up combos easier, and I always had one or two macros for buffs to start boss battles off with.

>>2975809
It got a remake on the ps2, but I wouldn't recommend that - it changes the story and the mechanics quite a bit. If you grind for a little right at the very beginning (get Alis up to level 5-8 or so), its not that hard.

The games are only sorta related to each other, and aside from a few callbacks, you're not missing too much if you play them out of order.
>>
>>2975835

IIRC there's a translation patch out for the PS1 remake.

If you wanna spoil yourself, start with IV.

If you wanna play it as intended, 1->2->4 and 3 is optional.
>>
Modern player here, just started phantasy star IV, never played any other game of the series before. Perhaps someone will get mad at it since apparently it spoils some thing? but I heard that it was the most accesible one. I just got Rika in my party and I'm having fun with the game, but I have questions about it
Is there a skill description or something like that? I still have no idea of what Chaz's earth tech or Gryz magic do
Is there a map, unlockable later or something? I'm not having problems right now, but I imagine that if I drop the game for a week due to work I'll have some issues finding some places. I like how they made a memo with the talk command though
I spent like an hour in that basement on Gryz village dying like a bitch left and right. Still fun.

>>
>>2976034
3's alright, but it's not very popular. It's something of a black sheep for the series - a different team developed it, and it was rushed, so the good ideas it had were lost in the execution. I wouldn't recommend it as your first game in the series, but it's a nice side-story with some cool quirks.

4 is probably the best-executed, but it ties in pretty heavily with 1 and 2, so you'll get more out of it if you play those first.

2's pretty grindy, but the dungeons/mazes are fun, and it's got a decent cast of characters you can actually choose from.

1 is old and shows it, but it's still a great game. If the remake didn't butcher its relatively nonlinear plot, I'd recommend that.
>>
Why did they drop the pseudo-3D dungeons of the SMS game? That was one of the best things about it.
>>
>>2976283

Alys was characterized more in PS4, so more was lost when she was gone. PS2 didn't have the luxury of a lot of cut scenes and between character text so Nei didn't have a chance to be Nei past the opening where she tags along on the adventure.

I am maybe 4 or 5 hours into PS1 and I just can't get into it. I love JRPGs, but the 8-bit era of RPGs always feels tedious and unpolished to me. Same thing happened to me with FF1.

Can I skip straight to PS3 and PS4? Will I be lost in the story or world if I do that?
>>
>>2977041
Play the remake, nigga.
>>
>>2977041
I'd skip straight to 4, if you think 1's too unpolished. 2 and 3 were a little rushed (3 moreso than 2, though they both suffered from it), and you won't be too lost in 4 without playing the others. There are a few callbacks, but it stands well enough on its own.

If you do start with 3, it's almost entirely divorced from the rest of the series (there's a brief, missable callback to 2 near the end), so no worries there.
>>
>>2975070
Don't take the bait. PS1 predates FF1 and he knows it. You should know it too.
>>
>>2975809
There is a reimagining on Playstation 2 but it's an abomination and don't you fucking dare play it before the original. It's a very different game gameplay-wise and wouldn't satisfy your autistic need to things in order anyway.

>>2976034

>>

>>
>>2976558
The SNES port of Wizardry came out ten years after Phantasy Star 2.
Automaps were however used in Bard's Tale 2 (86) and in a way in Ultima 3 (83).
But mapping square based dungeons by hand isn't complicated.

I know Ultima ditched the first person dungeons because it made programming more complex. Another layer in which stuff happens means another layer where things can go wrong.
>>
>>2977214
The Playstation 2 remakes have a serious case of QUALITY. Myau looks like a dog and the art in 2 is just all around shockingly bad.

Phantasy Star IV is probably one of the best games I've ever played.

All the others are dogshit. 1-3 seem like they are not even made by the same company. The 3D ones are shit because 3D is shit. I mean, really, can you name one 3D game that looks and plays as good as a 2D game? You can't, because 3D is cheap bullshit for brainwashed morons. Play your 3D, niggers and faggots. 2D is racist, only the Nazis would play 2D because it's superior.

One of the games speaks of Newmans aging rapidly and randomly dying without showing any signs prior illness. This applies to all Newmans. I don't recall whether it was PS4 or PSO...

So Newmans are very much like the Replicants from Blade Runner, and may actually be based on that very concept.

Rika's chances of living a long, normal life are no greater than Nei's. I think this is mentioned in the epilogue when she decides to stay with Chaz.

MUH TIMELINE
>>
>>2982370
Neitypes were a different species altogether. A freak accident created by the bio-systems lab after a power surge. I believe the lifespans of about 2 to 3 years applies to the Neitypes.

The Faltype Numans are designed to breed with humans to create superior offspring suited to Motavian conditions. Considering the drastically different originas I see no reason the short lifespan would apply, especially considering the spinoff story where Fal (Rika) becomes a MILF.

After watching last two episodes of PSO2 The Animation I realized that thing I don't like most about it is that it panders only to PSO2 user base not even acknowledging games that existed before it.
I mean, yes, obviously, it is titled Phantasy Star Online 2 the animation, but would it hurt creators to mention that it is second Online title, draw a cosplayer or two in costumes from classic games, make some music references?
If you are going meta, at least don't pretend that there is no vast history behind the title.
>>
>>2982779
I actually don't really know what you're referring to. But also I've mostly been playing it without sound. Emulating on PSP and usually listening to something else. The bits of music I've heard didn't do much.

Actual game though, I think is great and I love the mix of overworld and dungeon crawling.
>>
>>2983359
The American release doesn't have the option for FM Sound that the original Mk 3 game had and the translation renamed Tyrone to Odin among other things.
>>
>>2983371
Ahh, are there any other notable changes? I have both ROMs, I just played the US version because it was the one I saw as a kid. But I'm early enough I could start another one. I don't plan to listen to the music much either way though.
>>
So the only phantasy star game I own is 3. I'm not usually too into older console RPGs, but I got it in a lot of genny games.

All I've heard is that it's the worst one for whatever reason. Is it a bad game? Is it worth playing? Do I need to play the previous games to understand it?
>>
>>2983417
It's not awful, just kind of dull. You don't need to play the others though. One of the big problems with III is that it doesn't feel like it connects to the other games as well, and doesn't feel like it fits.
>>
>>2983423
So it's just a mediocre middle-of-the-road 16-bit JRPG?
>>
>>2983438
Yup. Where as each of the other PS games were outstanding for their time and very unique. III just feels generic. The main creator didn't work on it at all, and it really shows.
>>
I love PS it's unfortunate I can't find much merchandise that isn't PSO2 anymore.
>>
>>2983706

Another series ruined by waifuism. :(
>>
>>2983438
The generations system was pretty innovative for its time (DQV would rip it off), but it pales in comparison to the other PS games.
>>
>>2983417
As others have said, it's not bad, but it doesn't really live up to the reputation the rest of the series has.

You don't need the other games to understand it (as it's basically a side story away from the main plot in 1, 2, and 4), and it only sort of obliquely references 2 near the end.

I'd say it's a poor introduction to the series (it was my first PS game too), but it's a good enough game. It's not horrendously broken or grindy or anything, and the pretty big differences between Ayn and Nial's quests make it worth playing through a second time (the 3rd generation differences are small enough that I wouldn't worry about beating them all unless you really like the game).

Friends of Algo? Some shit I remember it. You could google the Phantasy Star webring. It was a part of that I remember.

Do you mean Profound Darkness, or Dark Force?

Dark Force is just a fraction of PD's power, though, so I guess Giygas would be stronger than DF, but if we're comparing PD to Giygas, then Profound Darkness wins, hands down.

PD (via time travel shenanigans or in other, unexplained ways, depending on which PSIII ending you take to be canon) destroyed two planets - Earth and Palma, and presumably successfully corrupted two star systems, plagueing Algol for thousands of years in the process of escaping its prison.

When I was at the save building it sounds fine, but when i came back from the overworld it sounds really different

Is this a bug? I'm playing this game on real hardware
>>
C/D: Odin with the Laser Gun is one of the best characters in PS1. Not as powerful as Alis, but doesn't require MP to do damage, damages every enemy on the screen, and enemies will never be able to dodge his shots (which, considering how much enemies dodge in PS1, is very useful).
>>
>>2991529
Actually, for the bosses, it's better if you arm Alys and Odin with Laser Guns, because even if their weapons are 1.5x times stronger than the gun, the gun never misses, and their weapon usually does.

This is kinda imperative when fighting King Lassic, because you can't keep healing everyone indefinitely, Lassic will kill you sooner or later.

Sounds like channels cutting out. Normal game behavior. Pause during a battle at the right time, wait a bit, and when you unpause, you'll notice that some of the music channels are missing until either the song loops or the battle ends, forget which.

There's also another fun bug where you talk to Lutz at the end and all the sound cuts out. If you teleport out of the final dungeon when this happens, the game freezes. You have to not warp to the final dungeon and instead go to town and save/reset the game at which point it functions normally.

This is all also on real hardware.
>>
>>2991620
It is a very creepy Wren.

Anyone play those Phantasy Star 2 spin offs made for Sega's old internet network a while back? Like Anne's Adventure and so forth.
>>
>>2993107
Yeah, those were fun. Depressing (for the most part), but fun. Shir's and Kain's are probably my favorites, though I haven't gotten around to playing Rolf's yet.
>>
>>2991537

I found that Alis with the Laconian Sword hit enough times that it was still very effective against bosses.
>>
Did you guys play the PS2 remakes of Phantasy Star 1 and 2 that got English translated? I've been thinking of trying them but wanted to hear what you guys thought.

For reference, I beat PS1 and got half way through PS2 on the GBA Phantasy Star Collection back when that first came out. Played halfway through PSIV and loved it too.

What a charming series. It's depressing to see it's so forgotten in how it exists now.
>>
>>2991768

Not him

Some emulators like picodrive and certain official saga compilations fixes that music bug

I first played most of the Phantasy Star games on Sega genesis Collection on the PS2, by the time I played it on the real hardware I thought my game was bugged until I realize its a bug

A lot of music sites that had the ost is the fixed version, is there any romhacks that fixes this bug
>>
>>2993107
Yeah, they're pretty weird for continuity though. Nei's adventure describes Motavia as a barren desert when it's fully terraformed in PS2. Barely any time passes inbetween, so it's not explainable.
>>
>>2994006
The remakes are pretty awful. They barely resemble the originals and have drastically different gameplay. 1 literally throws the original game mechanics out the window, replaces a whole bunch of monsters and has your characters doing hundreds of damage each, enough to one shot the original game's boss. 2 adds balance-ignoring special moves and has frilly Nei. Absolute filth.
>>
>>2994006
I finished them but not with a translation.
Generation 1 is too easy for my taste but Generation 2 was alright, if a bit drawn out.

I know that Playstation 2 Lassic and Dark Force are easier then the SMS versions, but I heard at least Lassic gave some challenge.

PS4 has a character that represents each character from one previous game.
>>
>>3007856
Eh. I don't think that's really an intentional thing. I mean sure Rune inhereted Lutz's mental bits and pieces but all Rika has in common with Nei is a slightly non-human appearence. They're not even the same race. One's an accident of science and one is a master race literally made for breeding.
As for the Wren's, Siren and Forren have little in common beyond being man robots.
And the last line
>PS4 = Alys or Chaz? Or someone else?
Even with your explaination I still have no idea what you meant by that. There's a character in PS4 that represents another character in PS4?
>>
>>3007869
I mean who would represent 4 in the hypothetical fifth game if they decided to do the representation thing again (which was kinda cool).

Also Rika is Nei because the devs intended her to be a Neitype originally, also I think she can get nei's claws in 4 but I'm not sure.

PS4's Wren is not related to the PS3 Wren in any way. Both games are a case of translators changing names for no good reason.
>>
>>3023659

They're not the same character, but PS4 Wren is inspired by PS3's character called Wren.
>>
>>3023659
>no good reason.
There is a reason - character limitations. English characters convey less information than Kanji.

Sure, they could've shortened Searren and Fouren differently, but that's not what happened - and calling back to PSIII's Wren-type was likely intentional on the PSIV team's part.
>>
>>3023659
Wren-types share a collective AI. You didn't know this anon?

But do I have to play 1-3 to 'get' it? No thanks then.

If it's a 100% decent stand alone experience that doesn't rely on me being trained into PS already, I might give it a shot.

JRPGs tend to be grindfests too, I don't want to battle the same monster 110000 times just to get a slightly better sword.
>>
>>3025172
They're set like 100s of years apart from each other so unless missing references bothers you, they aren't necessary to play.

3 is okay, kinda dull
4 is great so far, better than the first.

>>
>>3025201

>>
>>3025201
I found you can jet through a bit in the beginning without grinding, and then you need to grind a little for a dungeon where you get something called Asheline, if that's how it's spelled correctly. Later you need to grind a little here and there to make a couple dungeons bareable, but it's not bad.
>>
>>3025201

>you mean kana. names are written in katakana. but yeah you're point is correct

>>3025157
The games are all pretty different - disliking one is not a great indicator of what you'll think of the other games - unless you don't like RPGs, in which case you're looking at the wrong series.

>>3025201
1 and 3 require a little grinding right at the start, but are relatively grind-free later on if you're not retarded. 2 is pretty grindy the whole way through. 4 is pretty grind-free, and if you don't mind missing a handful of callbacks, you can safely play it without touching the rest of the series.
>>
>>3025350
Thanks for the info, I might give 4 a whirl then.

Earlier JRPGs I can't really get back into. That time's passed for me.

But they're not the same type at all, this is the point. Both 'Wren' and Siren (the NPC/boss) from 3 are the same model. Sirens show up as random encounters in PS4 and they look very different from the PS3 versions emphisising that the Fouren model is very different from the Siren (shiiren) model.

You're not telling me anything I don't already know. The PSIII devs shortened Shiiren to "Wren", and the PSIV devs called back to that by shortening Fouren to "Wren" (and by including Searren as an enemy in the crashed Palma ship).

Sure, they could've called him something else, but that's not what they did. How would you have shortened it - and in only four characters - in a way that wouldn't look stupid as shit? "Forn", "Four", "Fren", what?

PSO is a sequel to Crys' ending of PSIII where you see the worldship Alisa 3 carrying an undefeated Dark Force towards Ragol (unnamed in PSIII) and its two moons. The moons can be seen in the pso dreamcast start screen and in the episode 2 lobbies.

The GBA in its prime would have been a great place for Sega to bring back Phantasy Star w/ some low-level remakes, like Square-Enix did for Final Fantasy I & II. They wouldn't need to over-design them like the PS2 remakes.

Rudy, a four letter name, for one. And yeah, Fouren became Forn in game menus but it's not like dialogue has to use variables pointing to the four letter names. Headcanon time
According to the compendium Lutz and Alis had a lot of alone time together away from Odin and Myau for a few years after Phantasy Star.
Rolf could be the great grandson of Lutz. Making him the first candidate to receive Lutz's memories to become the second Lutz. The Lutz title and position continues down a genetic line and that makes Rune a descendant of Rolf.

I need help

I have a Lv 42 HuMAR in PSO 1 & 2 and I'm trying to beat Dark Falz on Normal. I have most spells at the highest level HuMAR can have them. I have at least one Scape Doll. I'm on a plasma TV, so my reaction time will be abysmal due to screen lag. How do I beat him? I have a cheap 3rd party memory card which wipes my save after the 40-hour mark. I last tried about 4 years ago. I don't want to get my save wiped a 5th time.

for normal
increase your ice resitance
for hard mode and higher you also want light resistance

as a hunter if you dont have a decent rare weapon use a raygun from the shop or any better handgun type weapon
its best to keep your distance when attacking so you avoid getting hit with slowmo status
falz is also weak to zonde in his first form and both zonde and barta in his second form

for third form which is only on hard mode and higher you just want to make sure you have enough hp and light resistance to survive his attacks and use handguns, foie, and other ranged weapons to attack him

also you want an hp stealing weapon for falz third form to keep you from killing yourself when he possesses you

What if the Earthmen in Phantasy Star 2 are the Coralians?

PSO Episode 3 reveals that the Coral Government found another planet to inhabit other than Ragol and that was the last we heard from them

In PS Zero Coral was renamed Earth under Mother Trinity's influence

Most of the mothers that Dr Osto made went crazy because the d-cells used in their cores matured into dark falz. Dr Montague and Calus seemingly found a way to fix this and was able to activate Delta safely.

PSO's MOTHER AI is called "Delta" which is number 4 in greek
Phantasy Star Zero's Mother Trinity can be associated with 3

going by the numbers there are 2 more mothers

PS Zero has another Mother AI, the Heaven's Mother
and Phantasy Star 2 has Mother Brain

Q:But if the theory of PSO happening after PSIII is true then how can the Earthmen be the Coralians?
A: Coralian's have FTL technology.
Their ships travel faster than light and probably time travel as they approach their destination.

Noah might possibly be pioneer 3
