After completing the initial menu tutorial and picking a partner pokemon, pick Online Battle from the main menu / world map.
VS codes are basically passwords. Set the preferences to Anyone > Use Vs Code > vgptg

How do I play Gengar when I don't have burst?
I bought this game around its release but got busy with stuff and I never even opened the game, I might get it out tomorrow. Any tips for a beginner?

Do the tutorials, they are helpful in this game. Especially the action dojo to learn every individual tool and the combo dojo to start off with some basic combos.

General tips.
Make sure you go through the training as it's pretty thorough and teaches you all you need to know.
Learn to CADC (Counter Attack Dash Cancel). It's in the training, but it covers it really quickly and doesn't really show how useful it is for getting through projectile zoning and movement.
I would say play every character to see which one you like the most, but I picked my main day one and never used anyone else outside of their combo-dojos.
Brace yourself for an absolutely abysmal singleplayer experience that is mandatory to unlock the Mewtwos, Assists, and stages.
