Seriously, Mewtwo was never top tier, even before the nerfs. Its approaches are extremely unsafe and its damage is merely on par. More importantly, it doesn't get a free "I win" move with invincibility to ignore the attack triangle and do huge damage every round.
It's a good pubstomper, which is why it's been overrated so much, but that also means you're a major shitter if you get destroyed by it.

Empoleon is at least good for any water starter at all.
Scizor is good in that we finally get a bug type.
Any of these may be planned as half a support set, though. Anything with currently only two move animations or fewer could be support.

I agree with the demeanor thing but I feel that Darkrai's typing and aesthetic are different enough to distinguish it from Mewtwo/Shadow Mewtwo.
I think they can give it a unique gimmick that involves sleep that could also set it apart.
With Darkrai we would be a little legendary heavy, but I there are worse legendaries and Pokemon in general to get than Darkrai.
I'm not a fan of Empoleon, but I do agree, having another water rep/having a water starter would really round out the cast. As an aside, they gave Suicune a lot of Ice moves which is something I feel the greater Pokemon franchise does (see Smash and Movies).
Scizor is definitely a good addition. A lot of people like it and it's one of the strongest bug types in the game.
I'm hype, truly I am. I really do hope these are new fighters and not parts of support sets.

Just finished watching the 2nd day of CEO via VOD. Those later matches were hype as hell, partucularly any match with TeeJay playing. Being an Eeveelution fan myself, I was also pleasantly surprised about how much Sylveon in particular was used, especially compared to previous tourneys.

Yeah, I think I make note of the traditional fighting styles they fit into and try not to double up in that regard as well. But I just figured it'd be interesting to be familiar with a mon from each of the categories so I've kept that in mind when it comes to picking up a new character. Most of the mons I'm interested in fall under Power though.
Started with Chomp in Power, added Blaziken after that.
My Technical is Shadow Mewtwo at the moment but I've become so annoyed by the Mewtwos that I've been considering swapping it out for Gardevoir instead. Which would give me a zoner as well which tends to be one of my better playstyles.
The only one I'm not sure on is Speed. Kinda want to play Weavile, but Pika Libre seems more likely. I'll work at it more once I've honed my Blaziken a bit more.

Personally I really enjoy the game the way it is. It's simple enough and has a small roster which makes it accessible to learn, yet there's enough to the mechanics to make play at higher levels fun. First non-Smash fighting game in a while where I've felt like I know what I'm doing.

A little bit. It's typically matter of guessing when they're going to grab. You'll get crits a lot with more predictable opponents.
Besides crits, it's just one of Chomp's many options for messing with your opponents head. >>26897525 and I have done a few Chomp dittos and it's typically a 50/50 on committing to D.Rush in hopes they'll commit to Sand Tomb, or cancel and go for a grab in case they cancel into Stone Edge. It's as fun as it is nerve inducing.

Probably not on roster size. People would still be whining that their favourite didn't get in. Honestly I don't understand the quantity over quality mindset. Just makes a new game a bit of a nightmare to learn match-ups wise.
Some extra modes might've helped out but I'm not really sure what they could add that they don't already have. Custom lobbies for online you can set the rules and stage for like in Single Battle, perhaps? Maybe a survival mode or something with an added chance of lucky bonuses or a boost to EXP for easy title and S.Lv grinds.
