Most legendaries and their positions, I preferred it when they were just rare legends which were just naturally stronger than most other mons, now we've got all these "gods" and "creators of everything"
Gen 1 was fine, there was mystery to the birds and they didn't have an overly flashy status outside of being powerful in their elements, barring mew but you couldn't find it just anywhere.
Gen 2 was also good, following the same motif but now you had to hunt them down than just go into their lair once discovered. Ho-oh and Lugia having to be summoned because they drove away from their homes was okay too.
It got iffy in 3 when you had rulers of land, sea and sky, it just sort of stepped up how 'important' legendary pokemon are, having them be caught in the storyline didn't help either.
Then it all got to shit in gen 4 with all this ruler of time, space, distortion world, emotions, willpower, knowledge, dreams, nightmares, all of existence, etc. especially when most of them felt forced on you. It just lost interest when you could easily capture what was essentially the god of the universe, especially because future legendaries would become so dull sounding in comparison if they don't have these special titles.

You should consider the rivals' canon teams the ones they use in their final fight against you in-game. So Serena's canon team is the one she uses in Kiloude City (or vice versa with Calem if you use the female PC).

You're clearly going to use Scald, and along with BoltBeam you have neutral or better coverage on everything that's not Shedinja.
Wasting a moveslot on Power Gem is a matter of 59 Pokemon, a large swathe of which are Bug-type shitmons. Replacing either of BoltBeam is a net loss, and so is removing STAB, obviously.
Starmie doesn't suffer from four slot syndrome. It's literally perfect in terms of movepool. It has three strong attacking moves, all of which can cause status, and has access to both Rapid Spin and Recover.
The only thing holding it back is its stats, and that's solely because of power creep.
It's one of the most fine Pokemon in existence.

Expansion:
The two companies have intense PR campaigns so they don't look transparently evil. In Flesh, BioCorp present a 'natural', 'organic' image to contrast the 'lifelessness' of CyberCorp. In Metal, CyberCorp stylize themselves as 'bettering the world through technology', to contrast the 'corruption' of BioCorp.

This runs absolutely counter to everything about Pokemon. A great part of the appeal is that anything you encounter, you can use. It's a fully customizable RPG party; even the "final boss" can join your team. It's what makes Pokemon unique among the big-name RPG titles.
