For the uninitiated:

If it was, that's news to me. As far as I know, the live action trailer is nothing but a feelsy marketing strategy playing off of the connections between Japan and Hawaii, due to, yes, it being the place the latest games are based off of. But nothing so far has been shown to connect what happens in it to what happens in the game. Especially given the real meat of the trailer: Shohei's being a foreigner with poor English and social skills using the Pokemon games as a way to connect to other kids in class. Hardly sounds like a Pokemon game.
I don't think we're going to be able to extract anything substantial about the games from it.

It's even worse when they're supposed to be your main rival. It's like they don't want the player to associate the other character with negative emotions, like you'd get from an actual rival who can kick your ass.
May and Serena were jokes, like they were designed to be strong, challenging and interesting, but fell short and were out shined by other rivals in their games.
