Yeah, so you plan it out, figure out what will be good vs several types, and build a team like that. For example bringing a strong fairy is almost a no brainer cause there is fighting, dark, and dragon gyms. Obviously it wont be expected to solo them, but it will swing the battles heavily in your favour. Just do that when building a team.

I could have picked Gliscor, Klefki, and Jolteon and do you honestly think it would have made a difference? Sure, Jolteon's got Shadow Ball, but Gliscor is Froslass bait and Klefki is useless versus either a ground type (like Golurk) or a magic bounce user (like Sableye).

In response to last night's meta discussion, here's a few things how the 3v3 metagame differs from 6v6, and how that affects Pokémon (notably on my team).
In 3v3, due to there being less Pokémon in a match, the power of setup sweepers (particularly Dragon Dancers) goes up exponentially, as they are much harder to remove and stop. This is the reason why Dragonite is a Battle Maison superstar. In actual matches against players, the opponent usually has a plan against setup. (Remu's Gyarados, for one, can OHKO any Dragonite through multiscale thanks to Mold Breaker)
The other big change is the unviability of entry hazards. With just three (3) Pokémon on ewach side, entry hazards are often just not worth expending the move or even an entire Pokémon for setting them up. This wildly benefits Charizard, Talonflame and Volcarona, all of which take half their HP in damage from Sneaky Pebbles. Other beneficiaries are sturdy Pokémon, Focus Sashers and Dragonite again. Of course, stealth rock can actually be viable again thanks to everyone kind of assuming it won't be there and slapping a sash on everything.
I got through the eight gyms either by sheer force or, if that failed, I did actual homework. Against Remu I did homework before challenging him, but it backfired because I assumed Gyarados carried Crunch instead of ice fang, and it came back to bite me. In 6v6 it's easy, you build a team that has an answer for everything. In 3v3, you don't necessarily know what your opponent is going to bring to the table, so you need to apply your brain to it.
Oh, and Danny/Strayy also cleared all 8 gyms and he doesn't have a Dragonite. In fact, I would judge his team is absolute garbage save for one Pokémon, but he definitely proved me wrong last night. It's as much about your skill as a battler and capability to create a cohesive team as just picking some strong Pokémon.
