Back when I was a wee Riolu and had Counter
I don't remember the Mon but they had a multi-hit move and I had Counter proc'd so every hit I immediately countered
Unfortunately, I didn't have the health to survive it, but it was pretty cool

Another thing that happened was back on Sheer Mountain range. Also a Riolu at the time. Accidentally woke up a Mienshao so I triggered Counter just in case
Got hit by a HJK, but the Toughness emera kept me with one hit (This was also the first time I learned that Toughness Emera's negate OHKO's) and countered it for the same damage
Levelled up from it and got Reversal, which I replaced Counter with

The first time I beat Rayquaza in RRT, I was starving and had 3 HP left.
I'd lost so many times I didn't have any food left, and the last floors of sky tower were obscenely complicated, so I'd always be towards the end of a belly by the end. This time I thought I was going to starve or get one-shotted because I was in the flashing zone by the time I reached the stairs, but Rayquaze never got a hit due to my Mud-Slap spam.

Another more unfortunate one (also RRT), I took an S or * ranked mission to escort someone to the 50-something floor of a place. It turned out to be a mon (I think Oddish) who would use some useless attack LITERALLY every few steps. Soon it ran out of PP but it still tried to use the move, and it would cost a step as we were traveling together. I decided to power through because it was a special mission with some cool reward (this was when I was on GBA and didn't know how abuse mail codes). After hours of skipping steps to allow this piece of shit to jerk himself off every other pace, the team of 4 got ambushed by some high level mon to the back in a long corridor... he (I think it was a Beedrill) threw a silver spike. As I frantically moved back through the team, Oddish fainted when I was one turn away from shielding him.

There are mentions of humans in RT, and myths about them in SMD. Since they're all loosely connected, it's unlikely that the human came from a different universe.
>>
Since thread is kill right now, can anyone give me a solid metric to judge whether a multi-hit attack will do more damage than an attack with high base power?

The example I had from a few threads back was Close Combat vs Double Kick on Terrakion.

Are multi-hitting moves ALWAYS the best-in-class, or will a super high base power move eventually win out?

Generally multi-hit moves will be better, but high-power ones can be more effective when your stats are lower.
Nobody knows PSMD's damage formula so we can't give any values, so you'll have to test them out yourself.
Losing Defense sucks, though. Definitely recommend Double Kick.

april 11th, dear diary
You know, I've thought about it quite a lot and quite often. I have to say that I live a happy, simple life. I have a hobby I'm passionate about, I'm gettin' my edjumacation, I have family that love me and friends that love me, and of course I love them too. I have dreams, but nothing out of the realm of possibility. All of the 'problems' in my life are really nothing I can complain about considering the state of many others. I sometimes question life itself, but as a whole, life is pretty fucking good, you know?

I feel somewhat ashamed to say that I'd give it all up in exchange for a chance to live in the PMD world (Assuming I get a partner, too). I don't think I could say this for any other fictional world. I often think really hard about game worlds and what would make them awkward to actually live in, and although the PMD has a lot of quirks too, there's just something so, so appealing about the thought of adventuring through dungeons with my best friend every day to help people in need, and coming home to kick back, or in SMD's case, eat a big ass dinner with all your buddies, and then drifting off into slumber with your partner.
Ashamed is saying the least. I can hardly believe I'd even consider something like this, but goddamn if there's just ONE other life I'd like to experience...

Is there a pokémon that could even possibly EVEN TOUCH Drifblim? Let alone defeat him? And I’m not talking about Aftermath Drifblim. I’m not talking item holding Drifblim either. Hell, I’m not even talking about Ominous Wind Drifblim. I'm not even talking about Drifblim at max stats. I'm talking about Drifblim with the Minimize buffs and Unburden (with no held item and being capable of both Gust and Shadow Ball), at quadruple speed from Unburden Ominous Wind, equipped with his Breeze Scarf, a Draft Ring, control of the IQ Skills and Quick Striker for a quad hitting normal attack, with stat drinks and Life Seeds implanted in him so he has 999 HP and 255 in all stats and can perform Ominous Wind spam while being an expert in shrinking and evading attacks, while also having an immunity to Electric and Ghost attacks from the Sky and Nether Globes, and also being permanently at double speed due to the Sky Gem, and having every beneficial swap item in the Treasure Bag for a grand stat total of 275 Attack, 269 Defense, 295 Special Attack, and 281 Special Defense, after using Ominous Wind enough to hit +10 to Attack, Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense.

Go into Gates to Infinity expecting to be disappointed, and you'll have an enjoyable experience. It's not THAT bad.

Go into Super knowing that the pacing is a little weird and EXP is tuned way too low, but beyond that it's the best game in the series.

It's difficult to understate how much I'm enjoying myself playing Super right now. It's arguable whether or not it's *better* than Sky, but it comes very close.

So PMD, right? I could've sworn this general was about PMD. pls no more fleenstohns

Gotta say, I wasn't too into Rescue Team's story until I played the Run Away segment again. I love that the story simply focuses on the partner/MC relationship as they brave the elements together and run to the ends of the earth. Even if it's just walking across JPEGs there's something weirdly immersive in its simplicity, and the music adds to the atmosphere a lot. Ignoring Lapis Cave's terrible music, all of the other tracks from Mt. Blaze to Escape Through the Snow are great.
The partner having faith in you the whole way made for some great banter, even if he didn't know where it came from himself, and his reaction after Ninetales confirms your innocence where he's half-crying-half-jumping-for-joy is still the most adorable thing. For a partner I didn't care about too much about, this entire segment was still great.
Overall 10/10, 100/100, better than the Voidlands and almost if not equal to the Dark Future.
>>

The areas in Rescue Team are really gorgeous, the friend areas and pre-dungeon zones especially.
>>
>>25908164
I'd say not. If you've played Sky before, you're basically spoiled when going into Super. Recruits are unruly and won't stay with you, the difficulty is ramped up to oblivion, basic attacks no longer deal above 5 damage and at the same time you're expected to conserve PP due to lowered base PP, the music is bland and unpleasant, the beginning is a horredously painful slog, even by mystery dungeon standards and the characters aren't very memorable. Plus the dungeons lack distinguishing or visually appealing tiles.
>>
>>25909158
While I'd fully agree with it, it's sadly the only part of the story that had anything going for it. The climax comes right the fuck out of nowhere and amounted to 'look above you, you retarded dragon!'

How is it more difficult than sky though? I understand what you are trying to say with the reasons you've listed, but having played both I found sky significantly more difficult. Maybe I just get lucky with the looplets, but in sky I felt truly forced to cheese (w/drifblim-and while it was fun at first the novelty wore off fast) in order to stand a chance.
>>

>If you've played Sky before, you're basically spoiled when going into Super
>basic attacks no longer deal above 5 damage and at the same time you're expected to conserve PP due to lowered base PP
I completely agree with these

>Recruits are unruly and won't stay with you
But it does get better by levelling up, doesn't it?

>the difficulty is ramped up to oblivion
Is it bad?

>the beginning is a horredously painful slog
I actually enjoy that

>even by mystery dungeon standards
What's the standard? I though it was exaggerating it more and more with each game :^)

>the characters aren't very memorable

>the dungeons lack distinguishing or visually appealing tiles
>the music is bland and unpleasant
not true!
>>
>>25909285
>the music is bland and unpleasant
Jesus Christ.

Were you playing with the music turned off or something? Dark Matter phase 2 is the best track from any PMD game.
>>
So what're the flaws for each PMD game?

>Rescue Team
No Physical/Special split.
Not every Pokemon has a portrait.
The story gets pretty bland after a while, and no character particularly stands out on their own.

>Explorers
Guild members are insufferable at their worst.
Specific IQ skills are limited to specific groups.
IQ is hellish to level up.

>Gates
Severely limited Pokemon selection.
Mechanics were gutted.

>Super
You can connect with all Pokemon released at the time, but good luck using them continually.
Probably the worst story out of the series. Still somewhat enjoyable at least, but...
>>
>>25909376
>Rescue Team
No partner in the post-game.

>Explorers
Lazily recycled engine.

>Gates
Lack of basic text-skipping functionality.

>Super
Confusing pacing, plot dumps, M. Night Shyamalan-esque plot twists, EXP gain is broken.
>>
>>25909340
Oh, are you referring to post-game? Yes, Sky is truly difficult in the Zero Isles. That shit is ridiculous. Same sort of applies to concealed ruins if you're an electric type, fuck Earth Power and Nidoqueen.

>>25909353
If you enjoy really slow beginnings, then yes, you'll love SMD. And the standard is of course Sky, the intro and the first few dungeons are slow. Also, the characters ARE memorable, I suppose, but overall not as likable.
>>
>>25909402
> Also, the characters ARE memorable, I suppose, but overall not as likable.

>>
>>25909397
I'm glad they recycled the engine, Rescue Team's engine was A+
>>
>>25909402
Yes, the post game was what I was referring to. I apologize for not being specific in my previous post. During the main game for both super and sky, there's not much that can step up to seven or more tiny revive seeds.
>>
>>25909397
>Lazily recycled engine.
That's not a problem, the engine was good and they made it better.
Also that's probably the engine Chunsoft used the most: Rescue Team, Explorers, Shiren DS, Shiren DS 2, Shiren 4(+), Shiren 5(+), maybe even the Torneko game(s) on the GBA but I have yet to see anything about them.

I think reusing a good engine isn't bad. Look at stuff like the classic Sonic games, they made them better each time while keeping the same base.
>>
>>25909422
The GBA engine that RT was based on looked dated for Blue.

It was atrocious by the time TDS came out.
>>
>>25909402
>the standard is of course Sky
Why would Explorers be the standard? It doesn't actually make sense. It's just one game out of five.
>>
>>25909397
>M. Night Shyamalan-esque plot twists
I think he'd even say 'slow down and relax' at the ending.

I was thinking exactly this the other day.
Then I went to sleep and I dreamt they just announced a new one. It was called "Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Hopes and Dreams" (yes, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkKVkul_RW4) and it was kind of like an indirect sequel to GtI, maybe with the same setting or something. I thought it was strange because of the name and because Super just came out. Then I figured out it was a dream when I woke up.

>Emeras are terribly designed, taking what was a decently-deep skill system and making it into an RNG-based mess
I hope you aren't implying IQ was anything other than another stat to grind. I have no experience with Gates so maybe Team Skills was different.
>Lack of treasures or unique items to hunt for aside from looplets, reducing incentive for exploration
And what exactly did Explorers have besides treasures? Saying "the post-game story" is kind of downplaying it, since it's basically a second act of the main story and is incredibly important, not to mention madatory. Really, the credits shouldn't have started rolling until you beat that part. Super has almost the same post-game as Explorers.
>Similarly, devs made Reviver seeds and stat-ups extremely easy to buy, hoard and exploit as a lazy crutch to make up for the bad level- and difficulty-curve
So did Explorers of Sky. Remember, every Gummi is a guaranteed stat increase with Spinda's Café, with the chance at an extra one to boot.

Pretty much.

I mean, despite all of what I said about Super, I still did... kind of have fun with it? In the frustrating, but still kind of fun way. It's sort of the same with Gates, except it's frustrating because it's so barren.

To me it's kind of like, Gates feels like it was finished but it was so stripped down because of the time limit, and Super feels unfinished because they tried to do so much within the time limit. I really wish GF and Chunsoft would stop trying to "end" generations with a Mystery Dungeon, because it keeps causing these sorts of things to happen. The past two gens were basically the same; BW/XY, BW2/ORAS, and a Mystery Dungeon. The other MDs came out in the middle of the generation and those gens usually got capped off by something like Emerald or HGSS or whatever.
>>
>>25911793
Team Skills were a good idea, but they weren't executed well. Basically, you obtain them like if they were items or something (you can't lose them, it's a one time thing). Thing is, you have to hope you find them in the boxes at Rampardo's shop, and opening them gets boring since it's slow.
Also I don't think the skills available were interesting enough, but content is the main problem with the entire game.

>Emeras
>Terribly designed
As opposed to grinding hours and hours of gummis to get IQ? It might be a better system if you're willing to put 500+ hours in, but I've better things to do with my time.
>>
>>25911793
IQ might have been a grindy stat, but at least it was permanent. Emeras disappearing after each dungeon basically robs them of any kind of permanent progress, and that's a problem that encompasses the whole game. EXP gain is slow as fuck, so making meaningful progress there is an even worse slog than IQ (tying into my issue with the Motivation system; why should I swap out to Pokemon I don't care about to level up the ones I do care about faster). Emeras are so transitory that they offer no meaningful or long-term progression; before playing the game I was hoping they'd serve as a way to customize "skill setups", sort of like making your own IQ groups. The only part of the game where anything is actually permanent is with the recruitment system (which again, feels unsatisfying when they give you like five Pokemon for an easy mission and then one shitty Pokemon for a painful one, which happens often).

Also comparing Gummis to Reviver seeds/Statup drinks is kind of a flawed thing, since Gummis still cost a lot of gold/are rather hard to find in dungeons, while Super's Reviver seeds are incredibly cheap (especially with all the gold bars you get from rank ups), and same goes for Statup drinks, which are fairly cheap and raise your stats much higher than Gummis did.

Super feels like Skyward Sword, where they try to make all sorts of changes and new things but it's all unpolished and none of it is done well. I can respect Super for what it was trying, but during the credits, the only thing on my mind was "maybe I should give Gates a second chance".
>>
>>25911998
If they were to keep emeras, have some more reliable way of getting them, or some way of keeping the effects
>>
>>25910938
>some mons are too rare
Doesn't really matter because most of the rare mons are trash. Not to mention that any mon can become a god with gummis.
This only matters for 100% completion, which is ass anyway because recruiting is all RNG. And I suppose it matters if you really, really care about Pidgey.

>recruiting is too hard
Not hard, just inconvenient. Also, Explorers has the size mechanic, too.

>jobs give shit rewards
Same thing in Explorers, but I completely agree.

>most "powerful" moves are complete shit
This is one of RT's biggest problems. There's no BP, so strong moves are actually worse, and range/multihit is king.

>Teeter Dance hits the whole floor
I never came across Teeter Dance users. Do they spam it at any time, or just when you're in the room?

>Attract OP
Another big problem, and one that Explorers shares. 100% accurate stun moves like Spore, Imprison, Attract, and Smokescreen are completely broken.

>certain dungeons require HM in inventory or in party
This is definitely questionable design, but I see what they were going for. I like the idea of bringing along someone to surf you places(kind of mimics how HMs work in the main series), but in execution it's just awful. They also pussy out by just letting you hold the HM which doesn't really make sense and defeats the whole purpose.

>IQ is easy to exploit
How? Gummis rarely give stats outside of Friend Areas and it takes years to get to Super Mobile, especially with bad typing. What is this exploit that I don't know about?

The last five are all pretty valid. I should note that "ahaha Mewtwo" should be "ahaha postgame", because once you have access to Friend Areas, you instantly become an untouchable god with huge stats.

Overall, a great summary of Rescue Team's issues, much better than that one for RBY.
>>
>>25911887
Possibly? I mean, you saw what happened with XY's worldwide release, there were plenty of glitches and stuff abound. I know that usually these glitches didn't pop up in the older American games since they were ironed out in the time between the JP and US releases, but it's still kind of alarming, especially that whole Lumiose freezing thing. And now they're supposedly planning for Sun and Moon to have another worldwide release. With how much of a moneymaker the Pokemon franchise is, it wouldn't surprise me if they're stricter on deadlines because they know most folk'll eat it up regardless.

...god, saying that makes me feel so cynical. Usually I'm pretty optimistic about this stuff.

>>25911889
I feel like if they keep enforcing this whole time limit on MD development, I'd like to see something in-between Gates and Super. Gates was polished well enough, but that's because it was really stripped down and all that, and it really felt like they could have added more in the time they had. Super tried too much and was unpolished. If they could strike that balance of "how much can we put in before hitting the deadline", I think the next game would be a lot better all-around.
>>
>>25911998
>gummis are hard to find
Not with Marine Resort. I always end up with two pages after one trip there. That's why I was comparing them, because gummis ARE easy to come by and the game TELLS you that Marine Resort is where the gummis are.

I don't know how I feel about EXP gain. The slow progress doesn't bother me since stat gains from it are terrible (like 50+ in Explorers but the whole time), and there's really no incentive since most mons learn their best moves early on or via move tutor. You can say that it encourages using stat drinks, but you don't have to use them. I won't argue that it isn't at least a little easier to get them in this game (especially considering their price), but it was still very easy to not even bother with vitamins in Explorers and rely solely in Spinda's gummi drinks.

And I won't defend the lockout system not disappearing in post-game.

Explorers still let you recruit when your party size was maxed out. RT didn't.

>What is this exploit that I don't know about?
Dual typed mons get the IQ boost from gummis twice. A Blue Gummi on Squirtle gives +7 IQ, a Blue Gummi on Wooper gives +11 IQ, because of the +4 from being Ground Type. Even the worst gummi for a dual type mon outdoes every gummi but same type ones for other mons.

I think the most important thing to do with emeras is to balance them a lot better. I watched a lot of friends play through it around the same time I did, and our feelings were pretty unanimous in that if you can find the really good emeras early on you're untouchable (Type Bulldozer, Barrage, etc etc), but if you keep running into shitty ones (Big Ears? really?) you'll probably need to hold onto your butt. It's sort of like the issue with Sky's IQ groups - depending on your luck with the virtual dice, you might end up with a really good "group" or you might end up with a really shitty "group".
>>
>>25912191
But that "group" changes every dungeon, anon. At least with Sky, you can pick a pokemon you love that has good IQ and stick with it, knowing it'll never change. There's no luck of the draw there.
>>
>>25912191
I like big ears cause it lets me avoid fights and try to rush to the goal

Or just prepare for mons to appear
>>
>>25912191
Yeah, for every run where you get Type Bulldozer/Better Odds, you get a couple Paralysis/Burn Guard runs
>>
>>25912214
No no, that's what I'm talking about. Even if Sky's IQ groups did end up leaving some Pokemon out in the cold, at least there it wasn't completely up to chance. If Chunsoft decides to keep Emeras around, they'd need to rebalance them in that way.
>>
>>25912191
Haven't played Super, but why don't you like Big Ears? From what it sounds like, it basically works like an Armband of Sight in Shiren but for monsters only. In Shiren, this Armband is one of the best items in the entire game, so why is Big Ears so bad? Are the other emeras just really good?
>>
>>25912273
>Are other emeras just really good?
It's this.
>>
>>25912252
Oh, I thought you were slamming on IQ. I agree, IQ is better.

It'd be neat if they had a sort of disgaea-like system where a Pokemon could learn an IQ skill from another one. Maybe from eating gummis next to them or eating a special "wonder gummi" type item. Certain ones couldn't be passed on for balance's sake, but it would help Pokemon who got dunked on by IQ groups.
>>
>>25912252
>>25912223
>>25912191
Did you guys see last thread where I suggested your looplets could "adopt" emeras and make them permanent after gaining enough experience while having that particular emera/looplet combination

You can still remove it after, and the experience stays for the next time you equip that emera, so it's like a cumulative ability list you can train for each unique looplet,

I liked the idea, maybe it could be paired with the ability to rename looplets to name them even more personalized
>>
>>25912273
I honestly never figured out how Big Ears worked at all. It just didn't seem to do anything.

The thing about the other emeras is that, well... yes, they are really really good. Type Bulldozer basically removes the penalty of bad move matchups, Barrage gives you a chance of using a move twice for no extra PP usage, Better Odds makes you never miss and when your PP is an even number you always crit... the list goes on. Oh, Ally Reviver, too, that's basically free revives for your teammates as long as you've got it with you.

>>
>>25912316
Having enemy radar in Shiren is very powerful because some enemies can kill you in around 4 hits, sometimes fewer if you're underpowered. Arrows(Shiren's version of spikes) deal a lot of damage, so softening up unseen enemies in hallways really helps in preventing damage to yourself. I might be remembering wrong, but I think you can tell which enemy type it is thanks to the message log("X took 30 damage!").
In PMD you're pretty tanky, but certain enemies can OHKO you depending on moves and type. I can sort of understand why it wouldn't be as useful in PMD since most combat is either a "windshield" battle or both parties just shatter instantly on contact.

Looking at the list of emeras, I can't believe some of these effects. It's hard to tell exactly how they work, but a lot of them seem pretty nuts. Even the whirlwind one you mentioned seems very useful for avoiding combat.
>>
>>25912473
I've never tried any of the Shirens, actually (I've wanted to, given I enjoy MD as a franchise in general), but that does sound pretty snazzy.

And yeah, the emeras in general range from kind of useless to pretty nuts. Super is far, far more along the lines of a Shiren game in that sense (you can easily get KO'd in maybe two hits at best, while enemies can take much more punishment), so things like Burn Guard or Paralysis Guard are pretty much useless, while stuff that increases your own power are more necessary, while things like Barrage and whatnot can lead to some really ridiculous setups. And that's just with one emera! Most of these have their random chance to work increased if you stack them.

The problem is that, well... it's all random as to what you'll find. And if you run into nothing but guards or the other mostly-useless ones, then it's kind of a rainy gloomy day.

I can see the appeal of them because if your luck goes really well, then you can get ridiculously powerful, but for me the dungeons usually end almost immediately after I reached that power-point, so it felt like the game was constantly blueballing me. That's a weird description, but yeah.
>>
Man, what is it about Flamethrower that doesn't let partner AI use it through the player? Torchic absolutely refuses to help me, but Riolu will use Quick Attack through me any chance he gets. Neither get Gap Prober either, so it's weird that Riolu will act while Torchic won't.
>>
>>25912761
You have to disable a specific default IQ skill, I forgot which one.
>>
>>25912774
The thing is I didn't have to do that for Riolu when I put him in the partner's place. When he's behind Drifblim, he'll use Quick Attack if Drifblim doesn't finish an enemy off, but Torchic will just stand there if I'm controlling Riolu.
>>
>>25912761
Line range attacks will hit allies if you don't have Gap Prober

If you want to get into Shiren, the first game is probably the most well-designed and accessible.
In Shiren 1, the SFC version has a harder, more interesting main game, but absolute ass for post-game. The only way to win the hardest dungeon is to exploit a broken item that was removed in the DS version.
The DS version adds some new content, makes the main game easier(but more boring), and fixes some weird design choices(mostly regarding the hardest dungeon).
I'd definitely recommend the DS remake over the SFC game, but if you want a more difficult main game after you complete the main game of DS, then you should check out the original. The item selection is much more varied than in the remake.
Shiren is a decently fair game unlike PMD, and each death teaches you important lessons about how the game works. One thing that isn't entirely obvious is the importance of trap checking. You probably already know this, but you can find hidden traps by using your regular attack on them. In the later areas of Shiren, you will want to check every tile you step on for traps, because some of them are devastating if enemies are nearby.

It was hard to go back to PMD after Shiren, it's really good. I hope you enjoy it if you decide to give it a go.

(Over)thinking it, I dare to say that most big flaws in PSMD are linked to the main feature of it, the Connection Orb, and, in a way, the Exploration Society.
One of the main points of the society is that you're doing missions to solve pokemon issues and have them befriend you, the problem not only that this replaces recruitment, but treats those other pokemons as characters that are not actually part of your team. And since they aren't actually part of your team, you have barely any control over them, thus no nicknaming or any customization apart movesets and buffing stats, as well as they going on breaks. The other problem of befriending is that since many of them are important NPCs and thus can't change, you are not allowed to evolve them. And since you get at least one of each pokemon, why even bother evolving? And thus evolution was nerfed into near uselessness by not giving any stat boosts.
Going back to the lack of customization of team members it becomes more understandable why IQ skills didn't make a comeback and why they were replaced with emeras, although they could have brought back team skills instead.
And of course, you never actually graduate or become independent of the society in any way ever.

I don't understand this complaint. In the past games, you only had enough space to recruit one of every species (with some extra space for mons with extreme sexual dimporphism). Why, in this game, is this suddenly now a thing that discourages evolution?

>It was hard to go back to PMD after Shiren
I've recently started to play Shiren and I don't agree much. Both are good and I think it would be good to have some stuff like the Special Episodes from Sky following Shiren's formula. But I still like both of them.

Aside from the original and the remake, which ones have you played? You definitely played more than me since I'm just halfway through the original one and I tried the first GB one (having played the original one for a while only using an online translator kind of works, but I guess having a basic translation would be better).
Speaking of basic translations, I know there's one of DS2 (remake of GB2) on GBATemp.

I'm pretty sure they would enjoy these games, so I'd suggest you to try them.
>>
>>25912906
I don't know, man, I haven't played the game. Here are some of the ones that seem pretty powerful:
>the Mega Evolve one(no idea what it actually does)
>Ally Revive(infinite revives for teammates? how does this work?)
>Barrage(Unburden? Is that you?)
>Berry Power with lots of berries(immunity to status)
>Better Odds(no missing, crits out the ass)
>Big Ears(scouting dangerous enemies)
>Clutch Performer(extra evasion)
>Distance Dodge(extra evasion)
>Dizzying Payback(free stun when you get hit sometimes)
>Dizzying Stare(free stun sometimes on hit)
>Effect Boost(only combined with certain moves)
>Elixir Search(never run out of PP)
>Emera Search(get more broken shit)
>Follow Through(extra range on all moves)
>Go for Broke(huge stats, if you a busta)
>Guard Boost(extra defense)
>Intimidator(extra evasion)
>Lullaby(free stun sometimes on hit)
>Misfortune Mirror(extra evasion)
>Natural Recovery(more hp regen)
>Payback(free kills when you get hit sometimes)
>Petrify Power(free stun sometimes on hit)
>Power Boost X+Y(extra power and accuracy)
>PP Restore(extra PP, although it's probably bad like Deep Breather)
>Status Immunity(some status negation)
>Stair Locator(avoid enemies and get through dungeons faster)
>Type Bulldozer(ignore bad type MU)
>Toughness(poor man's Reviver Seed)
>Trap Proof(immunity to traps)
>Wand Expert(spam wands as much as you like)
>Warp Payback(get enemies out of your way sometimes, although I can see how this could backfire)
>Whirlwind(enemy avoidance)
I don't know how effective each of these are in practice, I'm just going off of descriptions. For those of you that have played Super, how far off am I? Did I miss any good ones?

To use the Whirlwind one, just use your regular A attack and the enemy will be sent flying away.
To get the most out of Whirlwind, give it to your partner, turn off their moves, and then attack the enemy 2-on-1. The enemy won't be able to strike back.
>>
>>25913269
QR is the best method, since you can just take a picture of it and, as long as it's clear, it will be readable.

If you use a password, you need all of it. It's why QR i the better method.
>>
>>25913269
You can take a screencap of it by going to Miiverse and posting it here by going onto Miiverse on your comp and saving it. If you take a picture of it, it should stay scannable, but Miiverse is a guarantee.

If you type the password, you need the ENTIRE thing.
>>
>>25913269
As long as the picture isn't blurry to being unable to tell what it is, you can take a picture of your QR code with your camera and post it here and the 3DS camera should be able to pick it up
If you don't have a camera on hand, use the Miiverse
Passwords, you need the entire thing. And you have to put in the entire thing. Thus why QR codes are better because they're faster

I've played SFC and DS. I beat the main game in both, but I couldn't manage to unlock Fay's Final Puzzle, which is what interests me the most.
I've seen gameplay of the N64 one and the Wii one, but they just don't seem as good.

>Barrage

>Go For Broke
No revives make this kinda terrible.
>PP Restore

>Toughness
More like Second Chance and Once More in Kingdom Hearts. You have the chance to heal, but it breaks after one use and you can just get killed the next turn. It's more like a poor man's Sturdy
>Wand Expert

>The game has a full fan-translation! Just patch it and you're good to go.
No, no. I'm using it for another Shiren game, the first one for the GB, which isn't translated.

Shiren 3 seems to be closer to PMD from what I've seen. It also has more story and stuff.
I haven't seen much about Shiren 2, but it sounds like something in between I guess.

In case you don't know, Shiren5+ for PSV is getting released this summer in North America. There's a DS version with less stuff, and I guess you could mod it to have the translation, but I think it would be nice to support the localization, SEGA didn't even want to localize Shiren3 after Shiren 1DS didn't sell well if I understood the situation correctly.
>>

>I'm using it for another Shiren game, the first one for the GB
Oh. Your wording was a bit confusing, or maybe I'm just sleep deprived.

As for Shiren 5+, I don't have a Vita, and I'm not really interested in owning one. If I did have a Vita, then I would get the game for sure. It's sad that I can't support Shiren without buying a new console.
Does the DS version have a translation? I might take a look at that, too.
>>
>>25913587
>Your wording was a bit confusing
Yeah, it was. I only figured it when I re-read the post.

I think the problem with the Vita is that Sony prevented people from taking advantage of its main selling point by making homebrew development harder. I would enjoy some good emulator for the Vita, I'd actually like to buy one if it had a better scene.
Also the game isn't coming to Europe at the moment, so it's even harder for me to support them.

There's no translation for the DS version, but as I said I'm pretty sure using the files from the PSV version would be enough.

True, everything else in the story pales in comparison to that part. The pacing near the end feels really weird in general. First you're running for your life, then suddenly return to normalcy for a few days as you focus on renovations, then suddenly here's Groudon and Rayquaza and whoops the story's done.
Super did the climax-after-the-return thing a lot better, although at the cost of railroading you for the last part of the game.

It was... decent? Honestly, I went into the game just for the gameplay and greatly enjoyed myself, which is what I wish I could also say about SMD. I played it around the time of its release, when the most recent MD game I played was Explorers of Time.
The story and characters were pretty mediocre, even moreso than the actual Etrian games, but I just saw it as an excuse plot to go dungeoneering. I was okay with there being much less dungeons, since all of them were more complicated to compensate and each one could stick to their own unique theme. Only being able to explore the main town through menus sucks, but it's somewhat convenient in getting ready.
The fort system slows the pace of the game down by adding a tower-defense-like minigame you had to juggle alongside exploring, while simultaneously having to raise more recruits to man them. Not the biggest fan of it. There's a lot of systems in place that can severely punish you for failing to keep up forts/wiping out, including losing all of your gear and crippling town services, that I never had a problem with because I only completely wiped out once.
Not too many complaints with the combat. It's just about the same difficulty as Super, including the broken item balance, leader-switching, and aggressive partner AI, along with the OP double-action speedup from the past games. Guess I got the lucky end of the stick by picking two members with ranged skills for my main party.
Level 1 dungeons are terribly broken, since you still retain any skills you learned from levelling up upon entering. Wanderer with Agility and an instant death weapon makes soloing everything a joke.
The music is undoubtedly the best part of the game, but I guess that's easy when most of your soundtrack's composed of arrangements of songs from the original games.

Overall it's something like a 6-7/10, where Super would be somewhere higher.
>>
>>25921117
It's an okay MD, but the Etrian stuff is pretty painted on (so to speak), and it's very, very clunky to play. You're encouraged to make a team and everything, but oftentimes there's a lack of synergy to it despite all the ingredients being in place. It's apparently much easier to just solo the game, though I've never tried it.

I like PMD and MD, and I like the Etrians, but Etrian MD was just kind of disappointing.
