If you could defend a gym by yourself then attacking with a group would stop being optional. It'd be mandatory. And then the result would be people holding gyms for days or weeks at a time (or longer if the game dies out later) as people get either fail to get groups or fail to take it down either way and give up.
One of them has to require more people, and defense is the only one that makes sense. That way, while gyms might change hands quickly, you're never going to get a siege scenario going on where someone can just take a gym and fuck off because they ran into a snorlax or a dragonite earlier that day.

Then next time you only have to click that one thing and it all starts up for you.
With the newer scanner you can refresh the browser repeatedly as it keeps updating.
