I guess it works in some fights, but you should always go with Striker for SA, two amazing arts, and you can use the last for evade. The arts are really the highlight of the SA, it get's so much damage up modifiers.

here's a better idea, and it's how i spent my last 300 or so hours in 4u. make some weapon/armor sets you like, and then hunt whichever of the dozens of monsters that are in the game that you want. hundreds of hours of braindead relic farming or killing hundreds of hellblade glavenus for some shiny drops for a weapon you will never use is pointless. you might as well just play another game at that point.

Yeah, the two arts are mandatory, and you get higher damage on attacks default (in striker). And it's just good to have an evade. It dosn't loses so much that it isnt worth it though.
But, while you deal really good damage, and you never have to leave sword mode, you will mostly be pressing x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x--x-x-x-x-x--x-x-x-x as long as you use SA

close range coatings don't do any extra damage, they just remove the penalty for being too close to the monster (affects close crit distance, plus white sharpness on the melee attack)
Poison damage varies by monster.
You just want to spam lvl2. Bow can stack like 3.75x damage multipliers taking account charge level, crit distance, special skills like special shot up, plus coatings.
