It's really up to Nintendo and Niantic to keep the game alive and keep people interested in the game. If they're capable of rolling out updates, bug fixes, and content to hold everyone over then the game will do swimmingly. PoGo has HUGE appeal, and children, young adults, and actual adults are all playing this stupid game. It's simple enough that soccer moms and kids can understand it, it's got wide appeal simply through brand recognition, autists and no-lifers love it and have been going outside or even spoofing just to play it, and even in spite of shitty servers, bugs out the ass, and very limited content people are tripping over themselves to play it. Astonishing, really.
Imagine, for just a second, if Niantic implemented some kind of referral system. Give out just enough pokecoins that people can buy items through the cash shop but not enough that they can all be spent evenly to incentive buying more coins with real money. It's the little things that help the game grow or stay relevant, along content updates.
I would be pretty happy if there was a single patch to fix some of the more glaring issues within a week or two, and hopefully a content update before August. After that, assuming a steady stream of things to do in-game, it'll keep on trucking for plenty long.
