i used excalibur before the rework with everything uninstalled but radial blind and a melee builds, thats how shitty excalibro was, and fuck me that i know how melee works.
i prefer a stronkor because now i am just farming in this game, but if you want the tiniest chance for melee to be viable in endgame you need shadow step, that's a fact.
