Friendly reminder that it's pretty much canon that Chara stays dead forever and probably burns in hell, Flowey stays alone and miserable forever, unable to take his own life because he's a pussy that's both scared of death and aware of the fact that he's damned forever for his sins, and that Asgore never finds peace of mind, redemption or forgiveness for his sins and most likely takes his own life after the ending of the game or is executed for his crimes in order to bring peace of mind and closure to the families of his victims, Toriel and Frisk. All of the above is the most likely outcome considering what we saw in-game and none of your fanart or fanfics will change that.

Hello, /utg/. I just finished Undertale for the first time, neutral ending then true pacifist.
Loved it until the end (until Asgore), then got really frustrated with how long it takes to get true pacifist and travel through the whole overworld and talk to everyone (optional). No bike? No fast travel? No run?
Flowey was such a detour. His boss fight was cool in concept but all the garbage he puts you through, and the complete shattering of the SNES art style, ruins it. I only say this because I love and cherish the main SNES (borderline NES in some spots) aesthetic. Undertale takes main inspiration from EarthBound, but also the sepia-toned opening cutscene reminded me of the opening cutscene in Zelda: A Link to the Past. The optimism and animal people reminded me of Zelda: Link's Awakening. The nightmare fight with Flowey just reminds me of Game Maker and indie games, which everything up to that point did such a good job of disguising.
It's a good defiling of player expectations, changing the art style like that. I would love it in a horror game. Or if the art style was just okay from the beginning, then changed to some other okay art style. My problem is I love the SNES style too much to let it go. (Keep in mind I didn't even grow up with the SNES; I played games on the Game Boy Color, GBA, PS1, and GameCube as a kid.)
So Flowey fucks with you. Neat. He says he deletes your save twice. The first time it was a good gag but after my gut reaction I figured (1) I doubt the game would do that and (2) I didn't really care. After the first time I wasn't buying it.
My first playthrough, I didn't kill anyone. I had to go deliver a letter and go on a date after the first playthrough. Was this needed? Couldn't I plausibly be friends with a girl dinosaur without having to date her? It's awesome as optional content, but forcing me through it just slowed things down.

I'm kinda rambling, but I'm wondering if it's good that pacifists have to go and do other stuff before they get the true ending. Story-wise, is Flowey only able to be vanquished when the player has seven friends? Not six? Five? I get the significance of 7 (seven souls, seven friends) but that could've been an easy rewrite if that was the issue.
tl;dr first-run pacifist should make the True Lab optional and go directly into the good ending, with minor story changes to accomodate

Toby could have written a hang-out with Alphys where you watch anime with her or something instead of going on a pretend date, but I guess he didn't want to. I think much of the Alphys related stuff was rushed.
It is a little weird that players need to do a neutral route first. I guess you're meant to fight Omega, spare Flowey, and get his hint about Alphys - and that hint is Flowey's way of manipulating you so he can steal the human souls AND all the monster souls in one go. Toby probably could've done that a little differently to save players some time.

River wasn't fast enough. Would have been fine if there were more stops on the river. Besides, going through towns and caves with no speedup option and trying to talk to everyone before the true end (to see what they say) just took SO LONG. I think it took me three hours in Earthbound and in this it felt like 3 and was definitely more than an hour. EB has many more locations than Undertale.

I loved New Home. I adored the game unlike almost any other until the actual Asgore fight. Let me explain.
It was fine ONCE. But I was getting clever and trying to not use a guide and spare Asgore.
First off, he destroys the option for mercy. Talking doesn't restore it. Why? Just for Flowey. Fairly unneeded from a story perspective, on a pacifist run, because he lets you spare him if you're going for true pacifist and meet all the other criteria. I'm pretty unclear why True Pacifists get to spare him but little old me on my pleb tier Pacifist First Run doesn't get the option.
From memory, the path is:
fight -> he's weak -> option to spare -> Flowey fucks you over
TRUE PACIFIST RUN
fight -> he's weak -> option to spare -> Flowey fucks you over again -> you and your friends fuck Flowey over -> option to spare Flowey
But I already had friends the first time around. What fucking-over ability did I gain in giving a letter to Alphys and reaching the true lab? It's good *optional* content, but should not have been mandatory for me to get the true ending. She was already my friend. She called me all the time and posted about me too.

In a normal run, Asgore doesn't let you spare him because, depending on how you interpret it, he wants to die so he doesn't have to kill you or he wants you to die so he can save his people. Either way requires the destruction of your mercy button to ensure there's no peaceful resolution until he's physically unable to fight. In true pacifist, it can be assumed that you spend so much time befriending everyone that Toriel has time to catch up and tell Asgore and you to not fight.
You gain the ability to fuck Flowey over because in true pacifist, all the monsters come to the throne room to help you and then get absorbed by Flowey, causing them to be able to fight him from the inside of the soul and all that anime stuff. In normal pacifist, its just you, Flowey and the six human souls.

Asgore destroying the mercy button makes sense both from his character and from a story point of view because from his point of view he thinks he has no choice but to kill you so he can take your soul and free his people(fyi if you kill Flowey and then do another netural run and spare Asgore again he actually kills himself do you can take his soul and find a way to free his people from the outside). I think it cheapens his character if you just assume the only reason you can't mercy him is because of Flowey.

Rambled too much and didn't get back to my point on Asgore. I came up with what I thought were two neat solutions to jostle him out of his no-mercy mindset.

I saved the ButtsPie and was hoping he would enjoy it. It lowered his ATK and DEF, and "reminded him of someone" but that's it. I also had a theory that the stained Apron was Toriel's, but that may not have been correct.

Red herring from the game dev here. The player tells Asgore how many times he killed the player. Because Asgore canonically got 6 kid souls previously, I thought he'd be wracked with guilt if the player said this. "Killed me 6 times before" I thought he would take as a metaphor, that he killed kids just like me 6 times prior.
But no, that wasn't good enough.
Around this time I walk around and find the coffin zone from the bottom-right of the The End area.
All this and me trying all kinds of other merciful options with Asgore took what felt like an hour. This includes trying to survive as long as possible and refuse to fight him, similar to what I did with Toriel. Toriel was also not obviously sparable, but the Frog points out that it's not always obvious who can be spared.
It feels like a betrayal of the game themes that I ever have to fight this mofo. There's not even an ending for Frisk dying to Asgore and him finally enacting his plan.

I probably loved every character except perhaps Undyne, Muffit, Flowey, and Asriel, because they all try to murder the player in their own way and play hard to get. Muffit set back the temmie's college education by about 200G as I kept paying her, so fuck her.

It's neat, and absolutely terrifying, but it instantly took me out of my SNES mindset, which is a high price for a novelty. If Flowey gets all the human souls first, Frisk will stop him again.
If Flowey tries to get the monster souls first, he can't unless he steals the True Lab to extract the souls one by one.
The only way to get 7 souls and become God is by tricking Frisk and the monsters into getting into one spot so he can get them all. Otherwise Frisk will just stop him.
