I figured I'd jot down some notes on some of the better WAs in the game in no particular order.

>Stance (SS-version)
The R1 is among one of the fastest unparryable attacks in the game. If it's falseparried, it empties a 40END stamina bar entirely with either small shields or cestus, gauranteeing a 2-hit combo followup. Works as a rollcatch, as well

The R2 is a high damage HA thrust. Deals comparable damage to a charged R2 and has damage reduction during HA. Fast enough to trade on-reaction to curved GS and can effective approach 2H halberds. Consistently out-trades R1s from ultra weapons thanks to thrust counter bonus and damage reduction. Covers a lot of distance and tracks well, can rollcatch but is of limited use vs fast weapons. Can followup with a 1HR1 afterwards if it staggers.

>Spin slash
All versions are unparryable, and constitute the fastest unparryable attack in the game (some notable exceptions).
Scimitar version (jump spin followup) is shit due to poor tracking/range
Falchion version (twirl followup) is solid due to long reach and rollcatch potential
Tornado (StormCS) is a direct upgrade to the above. More damage, hard knockdown and can combo from a 2HR1 at close range.
Paired version (curved) is essentially the same as the falchion version, but with less reach. It's the only version that follows up the initial hit quickly enough to punish a falseparry. It can be comboed into from a standing attack (R1 or L1). Multihits are good for applying status effects, too.
Paired version (Gotthard's) does more damage than the above but the followup is parryable. It can't be comboed into reliably anymore, but still constitutes an extremely fast unparryable attack that leads into moderately high damage.
Curved GS (normal version) is a very high damage unparryable attack but cannot consistently connect its followups after a falseparry hit, and is much slower. Has a small hyperarmor window.
Curved GS (carthus) has the same issues as the scimitar's. It's bad.

Normal version is unparryable but not really notable for that since it's on weapons that already have access to faster unparryable attacks. 1st hit is a usable rollcatch and can be followed up with an R1 if it staggers. Most notable feature is that every weapon with this can combo R1->L1->R1 to tack on ~150-200 extra damage. Of limited use outside that combo gimmick, and can't complete the full WA unless it's not comboed into and your opponent is directly in front. Very small hyperarmor window
Drang Hammer version is probably the single highest damage attack in the game. Can be comboed into from an R1 or L1 and has a large HA window. Unparryable, but can't connect followup on a false parry. Considerable range and tracking, especially on the followup. So powerful and versatile that it makes the weapon usable. Ultra weapon fans should probably use these instead.

>Hold
Parry massively boosts ABS for the duration of its animation in addition to having full HA, imitating a falseparry but without the additional stamina loss. One of the safest parries to fish with, though the startup, active and recovery frames are unremarkable, and so just as vulnerable to a BS punish as any other.
The slash is parryable and slow enough to react to, but covers a lot of distance, has large range and is an excellent rollcatch. One of the most versatile rollcatches, it can catch a non-bloodroll when following up almost any hit. Effectiveness increases in low-latency and dramatically decreases in high latency.

While the followup is useless, the initial L2 is one of the most useful buffs in the game. 45 seconds of +80 fire damage on a weapon with already high base fire damage. The animation is extremely fast, takes very little stamina/FP to use, has very little recovery and has HA and damage reduction during the animation. It's comparable to a resin bundle on a Lothric GS except it last 45 seconds instead of 7.

It's pretty fucking obvious how strong this shit is but here's some extra notes in case you have haven't abused it yet:
Jump has a contact-stagger that begins the moment you leave the ground and lasts throughout the air-time. This contact stagger can build bleed if a carthus rouge has been applied, and can also headshot to break hyperarmor. The actual hit can also headshot, which triggers a longer, comboable stagger, does extra damage and greatly increases the bleed buildup. If it doesn't headshot, for whatever reason, you can roll out immediately. The headshot stagger will ignore iframes on a false-hit, causing you to stagger out of your roll but take 0 damage from it.
The move itself has HA and is unparryable, but that HA will break to certain attacks, including the heavy attacks from some ultra weapons.
The 2kat version has a longer maximum jump distance and longer recovery. It can followup with only 1 L1 afterwards, though this combo will instantbleed if rouge is active
The claw version is faster, recovers faster and can connect two L1s afterwards, but covers less maximum distance.
Both will adjust their distance traveled based on the distance their target is at the start of the jump. If you're in point-blank range but roll the initial jump-up, they will land almost right where they jumped, and not chase your roll. Both are punishable if they whiff without forcing you to roll, but the window to punish the claw version is very small.

I think at the very least there needed to be some kind of set up to Soul of Cinder.

In DS1 you're told to beat the Four Bosses and you can meet Gwyn. We've been told lots about Gwyn, and it's easily assumed he's the final boss.

In DS2, you're told to fight the Four Bosses and you can meet Vendrick, who we've been told is the king and even so he's still a ways off.

In DS3 you'e told to fight the Four Bosses, and then after the fact you're told you can fight the final boss.

I've noticed that this game doesn't have it's own Gwyn/Vendrick, this big important figure to the game's storyline, that you need to fight your way too because they're big and important. You don't hear about the Soul of Cinder until you actually fight it, and the Twin Princes don't seem much more important than the other three Four Bosses.

Hits almost right away in point-blank range, which can beat out many other attacks up-close
The first hit in the multihit string has a longer max range than the 3rd hit, which will cause it to sometimes fail to chain into the final, big damage hit at certain ranges.
Can't be parried (obviously), huge maximum range on the final hit and force two rolls in order to avoid entirely at close range, or one delayed roll at long range
Normal version does only slight damage (~200) and triggers a negligible penalty to stamina regeneration for a few seconds. It chips through shields with the final hit but doesn't deal significant damage through them, though the debuff is still applied. The first 3 hits of the string also build less status effect than a normal hit, meaning that it's not very effective at triggering poison or bleed despite being 4-hits.
Witch's Locks version does considerably higher damage but doesn't apply the debuff and doesn't have any special shield penetration properties beyond simply dealing physical/fire split.

In both cases this is pretty much the primary attack of the whip as its faster, longer range and higher damage than the rest of its moveset. Tracking is excellent at a distance bit if the first 3 hits are avoided at close range, the 4th hit will not turn sharply to follow.

Stance (GS version)
R1 is basically a slower version of the SS one. It's unparryable (the only such attack in the moveset) and has better HA than the 2HR1s but is slow. If someone is dumb enough to guard this it does huge stamina damage to even a greatshield and guardbreaks anything smaller.

R2 is actually as fast as the SS version and though it covers less ground, the tracking is still excellent and the reach is good. Just like the SS, it's a high-damage thrust with full HA and damage reduction. Out-trades virtually anything thanks to thrust counterdamage and damage reduction, and can be used on reaction to slower weapon attacks.

Generally undervalued just because it's normally tied to bad weapons. It hardcounters certain weapons (1H thrusting swords, claws) which bounce off of it.
Hammers with it and the BKS are generally too slow to capitalize on it unless they trigger the bounce-off, in which case you get two R1s, the first boosted by the instability bonus. if it doesn't bounce off, it will generally be able to roll out before the hammer can do anything. Cestus version is in the same boat, but slightly better simply on account of being ever-so-slightly faster. Basically, the vast majority of the application of the WA on these weapons is punishing shit players that mash R1 and don't know what's going on.

Greathammer version is worthless as they're too slow to even punish the bounce-off. They also have a 0-damage shockwave as part of the animation, which has no recovery, so if it staggers someone attacking into your perseverance, they can instantly roll out of that stagger. It actually helps slow weapons get away from you faster.

RHH version is the most effective one, simply because it's fast enough to punish a lot of approaches, and has enough reach to be a threat. Thrust damage amplifies the benefit of trading via the WA and it's generally the weapon that makes the most use of and benefits the most from it. You can WA on reaction to most ultra weapon attacks and punish with a thrust-counterhit combo. You can just spam the damn thing against virtually anything because long-reach thrusts with hyperarmor are really goddamn dangerous. Just be wary that it tends to telegraph that you're about to attack and makes parrying easy if you're predictable.

Morne's Rage is technically a perseverance WA and it's so much goddamn better than all the rest it's almost comical. It has the same "hit" as greathammer's as part of the animation, except this one does damage, about the same as an uncharged R2, and has a significantly longer stagger that chains into the explosion.

Pretty much. When you expect your enemy is committing to an attack or combo. However, the cost of fucking up the timing is a bit harsh since any functioning person likely won't get caught by the same trick twice.
I use is almost exclusively to secure kills.

One of the best WAs simply by virtue of being free stats
It's about 20 seconds of +7.5% physical damage, which is significant on regular axes/hammers and considerable on greataxes/hammers. The special R2s are universally bad and consume more stamina while having longer, more punishable animations, yet don't do appreciably more damage. That said, nothing short of the Large/Great club actually loses anything by losing access to their R2s for the duration. The buff animation is fast enough to be reapplied as-needed in a fight and a simple offhand regens quickly enough to mostly negate the cost of maintaining it perpetually, meaning virtually every weapon with it simply gains an extra 7.5% AR permanently. This is basically a slightly less-good Flame of Lorian, but tied to notably more usable weapons. The stagger is irrelevant as it's not fast enough to interrupt an enemy attack where an attack of your own would have worked just as well, and allows near-instant recovery so it can't combo into a followup even if it does land. One of the best WAs simply because it comes into play in every fight and is a constant benefit instead of being a highly situational, risky tool.

The bandit's knife covers all contingencies, doesn't it? You should be twohanding it to get the most out of it. If you want to parry then take out your shield and if you can't then just quickstep. But if you just want some moveset variety then Thrall's Axe might be worthwhile.

I think the SS version is probably one of the best WAs in the game, powerful enough to focus an entire build around it. It's basically an extremely fast poke, comparable to great farron dart in speed while doing upwards of 200 damage with an surprisingly fat hitbox that outranges literally every melee weapon in the game significantly. It's almost completely unpunishable, does pure physical damage, deals higher damage if the thrust portion of the attack connects and is relatively spammable. What makes it so damn good, I think, is the fact that it's paired with straightsword 1HR1s, which are already incredibly good all around and make someone very difficult to approach. I suspect high-FP lothric turtles may become a thing when this weapon finally catches on.

GS version does more damage for the same FP cost and speed, but doesn't have the straightsword's moveset to back it up, which I think makes it inherently less useful, and also costs noticeably more stamina, decreasing its synergy with a passive/turtling playstyle, which utilizes the WA the best.

And that's all. The rest of the WAs in the game aren't worth mentioning due to either being too slow to use, lacking a real niche that justifies using them over other attacks, or being so easy to parry or avoid that they're never worthwhile. Some people think the GSoJ is good now but outside of honor duels letting someone buff at the start of a fight, both of the WA attacks that trigger the buff are bad and easy to beat out, punish or, in the case of the stanceR1, parry.

You want to use it predictively when you think your enemy is going to commit to an attack. Usually before you actually see them attack
You don't want their attack to hit the casting animation itself if at all possible (unless they;re using a 1H rapier) because they can usually roll out afterwards fairly safely. The effect bleeds over after the end of the cast for just long enough to attack, so you basically use it before you would attack with the intention of trading with your opponent. Running attacks (excluding katanas) are the easiest attacks to punish with it, since they commit into long animations

Just like anything else, don't be predictable with it or it'll make you easy to parry.

First time Im "stuck" in a souls game. Even when I first bought demons souls when I had a console, I didnt get stuck. Played it offline and I didnt have any specific build, I could even say that I didnt even know what I was doing, but things went smoothy.
Eventually caved in and figured I'd summon a phantom or two to help, turns out theres zero summon signs in that area. Feels bad man.
