I self-inserted as multiple characters for Dragon Ball. Like for the Cell arc towards the end I'd obviously self-insert as Gohan, but for pre-time-skip Goku I'd identify as him. And there were also parts where I'd relate to Yamcha for being absolutely useless but giving it his all around the time Goku surpassed everyone to a ridiculous extent.
With Dragon Ball it's a different dynamic because that series is 100% fighting, whereas Naruto actually has character moments (even if most people here think it's terrible writing).

Game started pretty much where the last one left off. The four of them decided to go to bed and get up an hour early the next day. When they got up, they decided to start making a plan. Unfortunately, they fart-assed around for literally fifty minutes and had to rush to get into place. Waniko and Arata headed out to a field, with Arata setting up a remotely activated Detect Life scroll a little way off. The Kotsuka negotiators arrived - Kichiro, the head of the family, and Mitsuo, Kichiro's brother - and their guards. The discussion quickly confuddled Fugetsu and Renya as it moved onto tax rates, border locations and whatnot. Tsuka was rather diplomatic, avoiding from straight-up accusing Kichiro of wrecking his mill.
As expected though, that eventually happened, and Kichiro got rather offended. Tensions and voices rose, and, being able to hear them from the field, Arata decided to set off the scroll, just in case. Nothing was revealed, and nothing was resolved in the meeting, with Kichiro eventually getting mad and leaving, saying he was upset that an amicable solution couldn't be reached. The ninja all reconvened back into the house with Tsuka. They decided to help find out who, for certain, was sabotaging Tsuka's mill and lands.
Partway through, however, a voice called to them from outside. Specifically, to Tsuka. Quickly forming a hazy sort of plan, Waniko ducked out a back window and headed through the fields behind Tsuka's house, trying to take up a flanking position on...whoever was out there. The other three followed Tsuka out the front, trying to put themselves between him and any attackers. Good ninja.

As expected, it was Tsuka. Now with half a dozen ninja or so. It seemed he was done fucking around, and decided to step up his plan to 'take the mill by force, and pay off any cops who come snooping around'. There was one ninja that the three guys could see, down one side of fields, and another, in the top right, that Waniko could see from her flanking position. Waniko got a 22 on a Stealth check, and so was able to sneak up on the bowman on the right, and, in a move worthy of the Predator, duck out, shank him in the fucking neck, and drag him back into the fields, without anyone else noticing. In the meantime, Arata was able to notice - with a lucky Perception check - that the ninja seem to hold themselves with pride, despite being wounded and having ragged bandages covering some of their limbs. There was also a headband on the ninja's arm, tarnished, but clearly taken care of and worn with pride.
Renya decided to start talking a little bit of smack, but Fugetsu and Arata quickly dragged him back into place, as going head to head against six ninja isn't something they REALLY wanted to attempt. The ninja - similarly to the bandits from the previous mission - had been forced to leave their Village due to the lack of work, thanks to the peace that Naruto brought about. It seems that the peace is hurting more people that originally thought. Fugetsu and Arata decided to attempt to stretch their diplomatic muscles and tried talking to the ninja.
After a bit, and after Kichiro getting increasingly mad, the ninja seemed pretty convinced. Fugetsu told them he could virtually guarantee them work in Konoha under Naruto. Waniko decides to break cover and speak up. One of the ninja notices their ally is gone, which sort of strikes home exactly what Waniko did. She has a minor breakdown, apologising to them.

In a heartwarming little speech, she says "Being a ninja is difficult, and I've had to make some hard choices, but we all have to live with what we do. It must be difficult doing it alone, without a village to give you direction. I couldn't do it when I was alone. But now I have people to help me". The ninja make up their minds and sheath their weapons. Kichiro wasn't paying that well, and hell, it's not like they had a Village leader to chew them out over abandoning the mission.
Kichiro takes this about as well as you'd expect. He draws a tanto and charges Tsuka himself. Renya, rolling the highest on his Dexterity check, goes full hero, flashing in front of Tsuka and taking the knife in his shoulder. Performing a textbook hip throw, Renya uses Kichiro's momentum and bodyslams him into the ground, kneeling on his chest and pinning him there. The ninja are quietly impressed at the non-lethal takedown.
Tsuka thanks Renya and crouches down in front of Kichiro, saying, in no uncertain terms, that if he EVER fucking pulls anything like this again, or if anything happens that makes Tsuka think Kichiro is involved, he's going to hire an Amegakura assassination team and put a hit out on Kinchiro's entire family. It's clear he is done fucking around with the backstabbing two-timing piece of shit. For now, he's going to hold Kichiro for ransom, and until Mitsuo pays, he's going to put Kichiro to work, replanting the crops he burnt and repairing the mill he damaged.
The ninja get Waniko to show them where she hid their comrade's body, take his headband, and give him a proper burial on a hill nearby. They don't hold any ill will towards her - he was a ninja, and so was she, and she was just doing her job. Saying their goodbyes to Tsuka, the combined ninja group head back to Konoha. They run into the trader/bandit they got accosted by on the way up, but he summarily fucking sprinted off when when 10 ninja made their way towards him.

The group got back to Konoha around 7pm, give or take. As before, the mysterious ninja with enough chakra to bring them all to their knees was waiting for them again. He didn't want anything this time - or so it seemed. He was just chilling on the fence, having something to eat. He mentioned that they nearly ran into a bit of trouble back in the Land of Wheat. He said that he had a few clients who were interested in how the team turned out, and was going to keep an eye on them. Fugetsu sarcastically asked if he had any more constructive criticism, and the ninja ignored the sarcasm and said that, for a ninja who was the epitome of laziness, he seemed to consistently take charge of the team and make sure they stayed on the 'right track'. He finished his food and buggered off.
They were stopped at the gate by some Chuunin, and after a small chat, got some more Chuunin guards to escort the new arrivals to the Hokage's office. The ninja had to wait outside while the team went in and delivered their report. Naruto, being Naruto, already sensed the six ninja outside, and after the cursory greetings, asked what they were doing here. Shikamaru brought them in, and Fugetsu explained that, while it might've been a bit presumptuous, he said he'd be able to get them all work in Konohagakure. Naruto agreed that it wasn't his call to make, but asked if Fugetsu trusted them. Fugetsu said that they were honourable, and didn't bear any anger towards Waniko for killing their teammate.
In a display that Shikamaru saw coming, and stunned the other shinobi, Naruto exploded into Six Paths Sage Mode, bathing the room in golden light. Maybe a bit overkill, but it was a mix of it being late, him just wanting to go home, this being the fastest way of judging if they're trustworthy, wanting to put the scare on them a bit, and maybe a teeny weeny bit wanting to see the reactions of the team.

In short order, Naruto changed back to normal, and told Shikamaru with a smile to get them cleaned up, the ones that needed it to the hospital, and Konoha headbands for all of them. Naruto then turned back to the team and looked over them. He expressed how proud of them all he was - how he had placed his trust in the four of them, and they had exceeded his expectations. To Waniko, he said: "You're a credit to Amegakure. I've already passed on high praise to Lord Zed about your performance. He was not surprised, but he was pleased. You do your Village proud."
To Fugetsu, "I didn't know Suigetsu that well, but you live up to every story I've heard of the Hozuki clan. You have two Shinobi Swordsmen in your family, and a Mizukage, and you're on track to be the third Swordsman. Your family has told me what it expects of you, but if you want my honest opinion...at the rate you're going, you can do anything."
To Renya: "I might not have agreed with everything Danzo said or did, but I acknowledge the loyalty of the Shimura clan as a whole. Your clan was integral to the forming of Konoha, and keeping it safe throughout the decades since. You do you clan and your ancestors proud. You're going to be an exceptional ninja."
And to Arata: "The Fujita have already been watching you very closely, from what I've been told. I've personally passed on my praise to your elders. You look like you're going to be one of Konoha's own legends in a few years' time."
They all got their mission pay - 350 Ryo each - and get a few days rest and recovery before being hit up again.
So, Waniko got her first up-close and personal kill, and it managed to be a lot cleaner than Renya's. Arata is currently the Jew of the team, hoarding all of his precious ninja shekels, topping the leaderboard at 875 Ryo.

Well, actually I do something rather similar in Chuunin Uzumaki.Where, obviously, Tsunade ends up picking promotions, and besides the smart, strategically-minded Shikamaru who leads from the back she also picks Naruto to lead from the front, sort of like Jiraiya would.
I simply make a couple of establishing paragraphs about the world, lead in the reader to where and how it goes different from the main story. I'm actually rather happy with how the introduction has turned out, so I can recommend reading that at the very least for ideas as to how to do a split from the canon while keeping most of Part 1 around.
Not that I'm saying you should do it the way I have, of course

Brief summary:It's Naruto's birthday a few years before he becomes Hokage.
At first it looks like Hinata forgot
Then it looks like she's punishing him with burnt dinner
So he thinks she's mad at him
But she urges him to eat and he discovers that the dinner was made by Boruto and Himawari
And Hinata made him a separate dinner
Then they celebrate and put the kids to bed
They talk about the future, as Kakashi is soon to retire
Hinata tells Naruto to leave the house to her and that it'll be okay even if Boruto and Himawari fight, since they're descended of she who loves Naruto
Naruto retorts that she'll be okay since she'll be with children descended of he who wants to protect Hinata
Hinata tells Naruto that she'll be lonely but just the fact that he's alive and that she can be with their kids makes her happy

I doubt that. At his power level, much like how Madara beat the entire army of the Allied Shinobi, he could basically take on anyone who is not Gai or Lee on relatively high Gates with just Academy basics.

The funny thing is if he spared a moment's thought and didn't so desperately want to channel his own problems onto Naruto, there would be a whole host of potential sources of drama from him being more mature.
For starters Bort being a genuine talent is not something he himself has any experience with, he doesn't know how to handle that, because the only way he ever related to it was as an underdog. You could have scenes of him training Boruto, teaching him the Rasengan or the toad summoning, and have the kid really catch onto it. (As well as time spent with his father etc, as the job,and Boruto being at the academy, clones or no, would still somewhat impact their time compared to going off to missions then back home full time until the next one as before.)
The problem of course would be an issue of knowing when Bort would be ready for what, and dealing with knowing how stupid it is for him to expect standards of maturity from his son that he in his age would not have lived up to, yet now in hindsight (with reports of missions gone wrong) knowing what can happen when a kid gets his hand on some good tech, gets cocky, makes mistakes he would not have with just the basics, or even worse, qualify and be needed for missions too serious for the age.
Balance this out with Bort getting a whiff of this, but not being THAT mature, thinking his father is keeping things from him because he thinks he doesn't want to be surpassed or something.
The result could have been Bort sulking, and happening upon Sauce, and getting him to teach him lightning element, resulting in Boruto creating a Lightning Rasengan, which, much like the early Wind Rasengan, actually does him some kind of serious harm.

You could have a scene of Naruto yelling at Sauce for interfering with his family and son, Sauce for once using his autism well and piercing right the fuck through Naurto's thinking, juxtaposing him to how he used to be, and how risks should be taken sometimes lest you stunt the growth of your kid.
You could have Naruto visit that memorial stone or, say, a statue to Jiraiya, have a talk with Iruka and Kakashi, all about raising a kid too eager to get ahead of himself, and maybe ask them of how they'd dealt with it when he surpassed them.
Maybe have him voice that he's been so focused on not letting Boruto make the same mistakes he has, he's forgotten to look out for new mistakes he might be making right now, or that how he's been neglecting a father's job, making sure that his kid gets to branch out, make their own mistakes and then help them deal with what comes.
This shit writes itself. But then we might have had to watch a story about people changing and growing up instead of, say, Moon-men attacking the Chuunin Exam.

Game is over. Another short, sharp and sweet SoL game between missions. As usual, players, don't read spoilered things, as they're more for the explanation of the people in the thread than anything else. This was a mission in and of itself - trying to co-ordinate four players doing different things.
So, Renyaran into Inojin shortly after waking up. Inojin told him that Ino was looking for him, and to swing by sometime that day. Putting it off, Renya decided to swing by Tenten's store again, asking about some form of sealing for his spear. Specifically, asking about a tattoo seal so he didn't need a scroll. Tenten was a bit hesitant, as only the person that the tattoo is ON should do a sealing of that calibre. As it was, since the store was empty, she decided to kick-start his instruction into the sealing art. Renya quickly realised it wasn't as easy and drawing some squiggles on a paper and tapping it - more, it was an intricate combination of mathematics, physics, chakra control and a little bit of flair. After several hours, Tenten decided he was ready, and watched over as he drew up a scroll. She placed a kunai in the centre and - rolling an 18 (with a +2 bonus) on a Chakra test - successfully sealed it within the scroll to such a degree that Tenten asked if he'd actually done it before.

There was a normal micromesh mask, but the assistant also mentioned a chakra-laced one that didn't crumble against airborne acids, and also stood against chakra-based attacks like Fire Release. Deciding it better to pay the extra and get the quality, Arata put down 450 Ryo as a 50% deposit, got his face measured, and said he'd bring his team back the next day so they could get theirs done.
