It was entertaining, but I wouldn't call it a great game. A great story-driven game is one that I can either take seriously or laugh at for the creator's intended reason. There are only a handful of scenes that I felt managed to be effective despite terrible production values. Plot-wise, I'm not a fan of just adding more and more layers to further complicate things. Especially when it's far from subtle. 999 is still my favorite--I wish it was a self-contained story.

Lance has a charge that makes you lunge forward that helps me get in and out. I have pretty high defense too. My devour for combos makes me step backwards which also gets me out of harms way and I get a little HP per devour while in Burst. That said, I felt like I got destroyed by that guy in that mission we just did.
Output is pretty decent once you get a part broken since it's really precise.

Back when SAO anime aired, it became huge in Japan, Asia and North america.
But they didn't capitalise on the success until much later with the three SAO Vita games, and the PS4 game, and the single PSP game. It was a missed opportunity.
So this time they wanted to make a new franchise and back it really hard from the get go.
They chose to bet on Asterisk Wars, because Infinite Stratos was also a success and the illustrator works on Asterisk I believe.
They gave it a high budget anime kick kick ass OP/ED, and they made a Vita game to time it with the anime, and even plans to localise to Asia and NA even before the game launched in Japan.
It was a big bet in the hopes the franchise would be popular like SAO and IS.

I love ToIR's gameplay. They open up a lot of fun skills like basic combo extensions and artes repeat early on so you can into higher level gameplay at brisk pace, and there are a some neat perks like being able to counter tech outs and cooking allowing you share passives between party members. It's a solid take n the Team Symphonia style formula with some great quality of life features to make it more engaging. I wish the main Tales team had some of the design sense that 7th Chord used with the R games.
