I don't really see that as a problem from a character stance. Persona 4 made it pretty clear no one in the game was cured or something. Every last one of them was still holding on to some of the regrets/troubles they had in the game, which feels pretty true to life to me. And the shadows/fakes in Arena tested them.
Of course, from a story-telling perspective this is a problem, but that's what happens when you make a game starring nothing but characters who already went through several entire arcs already.

The real difference is Pierced Boy is hardly even a character. There's comparatively so much less story/dialogue in P1 compared to the rest of the series, with Pierced Boy only getting the occasional choice (mostly leading up to said meeting with his shadow).
I generally find the topic to be incredibly silly. Persona has always used silent protagonists. The problem with this is it's hard to have any real meaningful relationships this way. If people like the character it feels hollow because the player didn't do anything, but if they fight with the protagonist, characters come off as ungrateful assholes because again the player did nothing.

Following this speech the rest of the demo was entirely in Japanese, a sure sign that localization is in the works and the cast in place but with work still quite a way from completion.
