This scene is sad when you realize that Shizune is the one who wanted to make friends despite her own difficulties only to see that their shared interests (chess) wasn't something they could bond over. Hanako has her own issues with making friends but Shizune could have given her the mutual respect she craved.

I've been trying for two years to find the best way to describe why the official public release is so inferior to the alpha. I was doing Lilly's alpha route just now (again), and I decided on the word.
"Over-edited"
The official release was waaaaaaaay too over-edited. Take Hisao's response here. "Aye aye, ma'am" ... It's a very casual response that a normal teen might say. But it sticks out like a sore thumb because KS has been edited to do their best to make it a literary masterpiece instead of a story about a boy and girl. It sticks out (due to over-editing), but at the same time feels very natural.
They should have stopped editing a year earlier. my 2cents.

I always thought that Hisao was intentionally bland, able to shift to whatever personality accents the path he chooses. It also made him more relatable to from a player perspective. If he were too personalized, it may break suspension of disbelief for some. Just my take any way.

Overediting probably was a thing (but some Alpha routes were really too raw for being an official release).
But, at least for the routes with different plots, I think they were sometimes better than final ones.
Final Lilly's route was better than Alpha one. I also suspect Lilly's Alpha was an unfinished route, if I remember correctly you had no relevant choices but the one to switch to Hana route.
Final Shizune's route... I played it twice, but I never appreciated it. Alpha route had an overhelming drama in the last one, probably it was too much and too forced, but the plot sounded more appealing to me.
Final Hana 's route... I appreciated it, but meme asides it's clear it was rushed. A lot.
True Alpha route was a lot better 'til almost the end, I found it more appealing.
At least until the all girls-booze party and the decision to go seeing old Hana house, it seemed a patchwork between different versions to me, these 2 things happened so suddenly and appeared out by nowhere.

I need to replay it. When I played it, Lilly's route had only 2 meaningless choices (one of them after you daydreamed HanakoxLilly yuri stuff, I don't remember the other one), and the choice to switch to Hana's route or continue with Lilly's route; and after that, hours of gameplay with no choices.

Some quick advices
1) You got a neutral/bad end on your first playthrough (as I did, not on Lilly tho). Try to replay it to get the good end, probably Lilly's good one it's the highest feels ride
2) Consider taking some time before playing another route. After my first girl, whenever I saw her around I felt guilty as hell, as I were cheating her. And this provoked me to enjoy only a little my 2nd route, I replayed it after 2 years and it was awesome.
3) Being here with us is partly good, partly bad. You'll have people to talk about THE FEELS with, but this place is spoilerous as fuck for someone who still have to play part of the game.

Each route is different, every route's main theme is different, as every girl is different.
I also believe the order you play the girls is an important part of the game.
So I give you a little advice: don't play Hanako as last.
As you may have noticed in Lilly's route, when you're stuck on a girl you'll see her "better friend" a lot of times, and the other ones sometimes/rarely.
I see you have been hit by Lilly's game experience, dunno if she is (or she will become) your waifu, but if there's the risk, playing Hanako route may leave you a bad taste about having around Lilly.
At least, it happened the opposite with me: tried to get Hanako first, I got her, she became my waifu, played other routes, had Lilly as last.
I enjoyed the experience, but two things happened on that route about Hana broke my heart.
And I suppose you can suffer the same thing, so leave another girl as last one, not Lilly's best friend.

Exactly what it said (and shown in the log). Yuuko is Lilly's cousin, in a literal sense. Or at least, was intended to be during the Alpha phase. Maybe they left it out of the final because it was confusing.
Jigoro (Shizune's dad) is married to the sister of Lilly's father. So Lilly's dad and Shizune's dad are brother-in-law - they're not actually cousins, as implied, and the developers have said that Shizune and Lilly being cousins was a "typo" (*cough*inconsistentwriting*cough*)
If Yuuko is Lilly's cousin, would that make her Shizune's step-sister, or were they going with the literal interpretation, making Yuuko a kid from an unnamed sibling of Lilly's parents. Or it could have been a 2nd typo, making Yuko a daughter of Jigoro.

Considering you just played Lilly, how you seemed to dislike Shizune, and that their routes can be considered the opposite ones, probably it will better for you to play Shizune. Her route is probably the less appreciated, if also for you it won't be that great after that you'll found only better ones.

It's pretty highly rated, I don't actually think it holds up quite sublimely as a proper route, I'd say Hearts' Rika route is good for that, though. The pacing and good/bad end addition is constructed in such a smooth way that I feel it could've had a place in the story.

The videogame passion, when you've got that 'golden game' you're really talented at, and you pull off that crazy move, that's one of the best feelings ever.
Besides that, seeing others happy does make me happy, especially when I had a hand in making them happier.
I'm happy when trying to figure something out, in games or otherwise, anything that doesn't have a defined rule and I just nail it. A meta is a very unique space where you can come up with something and if it actually works, it feels incredible.
Liquor makes me happy too, but it requires at least one of the above or something else to validate it, drinking alone and not getting anything out of it isn't a very good feeling.

Well, the main thing is that KS is purposefully free of acts of pure 'evil', unlike other common VNs that have clearly defined 'adversary' characters. So, though I think Kenji belongs somewhere around Chaotic Good, KS does not have any real fit for anything Evil so Kenji as Chaotic Evil is fine with me.
learning details of a character's backstory is pretty bad desu, you should be able to know everything there is to know about the character from just their bio on the official site, without playing the game

You're using a loose definition of "evil" ... In KS, there were most certainly acts of malice used with the sole intention of causing harm to another person for no reason other than wanting to see them suffer.
The most obvious example is Lilly/Shizune's back-and-forth. Lots of stabs that were in very poor taste through out multiple routes. And Shizune wasn't always the one to start it.
No one is pure evil. It may sound silly, but you know Hitler had a few good points, such as his charisma, and he was known to show unwavering kindness to those close to him including the obscure story of him with the little girl in the wheelchair that he adopted that you never hear about.
Pick any other horror-show of human history. They did very evil things, sure. But if all it takes is evil acts to cast someone as evil, then we're all pretty fucking evil.

In KS there is no one causing negative events purposefully. In Emi's route Hisao and Emi are the ones causing the problems without thinking because Hisao wants to fix Emi but Emi doesn't want to be fixed she just wants help fixing herself. Emi's gave me the most feels because I can really relate to that. Many times someone's wanted to fix me (I am socially awkward, poorfag) and many times I have wanted to fix other people. You can never solve someone's problem for them they have to do it themselves. The others didn't really give me feels except Rin because I can relate with being a social outcast. Shizzles problem is communicating her feeling and motives, Lilly's is trying to be too independent (sometimes you just need a little help), Hanako is dealing with not judging yourself (she may seem socially awkward but it her doing that to herself.)

Emi's and Lilly's routes are really similar in problem. Lilly doesn't like leaning on people because of her disability and try's to distance herself from situations. Emi tries to deal with situations by herself and it hurts her more than she thinks.
I am not missing both my legs and I am not blind but I can sympathize with their way of dealing with issues

I read KS as I was going through a difficult period in my life. I found Lilly's, Emi's and Rin's paths really hit hard. I had to take days in between routes and in the end my friends were saying "It's like you've aged a couple years in the span of a month." I have never liked being dependant on people but reading KS showed me how much my class (last year high school fag) depends on each other.
