Legend gave you nifty items that helped with fighting well, Hero gave you some of the cheaper-feeling items like healing potions.
Also while Legend was obviously the better option, Hero sometimes seemed more reasonable in occasions. That mission that had you collect a micro-mushroom for the Naras and representatives from the villages was a fun example, for instance.

I think it was somewhere around the Pain's Assault arc, with Kakashi using the Sharingan and Kamui consistently without falling down and passing out. He breathes a bit heavy, but considering how much chakra the base Sharingan uses, he pretty much should've been dead.

I always found ridiculously stupid that Naruto could split his ninja juice equally in a thousand parts and still have enough left for giant summonings, rasengans and more clones but Kakashi dropped dead for a week after using the sharingan for half an hour and so did Sasuke if he tried three chidoris in a day.

That's a bit simplistic. Literally the entire Village turned their back on him. That'd be brutal to deal with, dude. Even the people he saved came to resent him. Kakashi lost two friends but had the support of the entire Village behind him. Sakumo had both nobody and nothing.
Kakashi arguably had it worse of over the long haul, but he always had people to help him get back on his feet and soldier on. He had support from his friends and his Village. Sakumo did what he thought was best, saved three lives, and was shunned forever from it.
Depression is a hell of a drug, and it wouldn't surprise me if Sakumo copped it in spades after that mission. Especially since I think it's (non-canonically) said that the mission he botched directly led to the Third Shinobi World War.
