150 is what I use, and I don't CTD in fights. I have a 2GB VRAM video card and 8GB of PC RAM so I feel like if you have that or better it shouldn't matter, but who knows.
You could try a test environment of setting all graphics options to min - if that solves the problem, then you know it's something there, at least. Or just lower corpse count as suggested and hope that would be the setting.

In a fight? no, not exactly. I think it just boosts your numbers so that the game can fine-tune the amount of troops each unit actually is able to deploy - like how it does in vanilla. But it's special here to allow for ARMIES and for WARBANDS, and because seeing an army of 7000-15k men is cooler than seeing an army of 200, or whatever.
I'm a bit confused as to what actually gets deployed though. It seems to break your mans up into a few different groups (1/2/3, etc) but they aren't 100% of the same type. I'll get #1 labeled as "Samurai (Elite)" but then it's not 100% elite samurai sometimes, maybe?
Then it also seems to scale everything up as necessary so if you have 10 teppo samurai, it's actually like 50 in the fight. It's all very abstract. It also ignores normal battle size rules so I hope you didn't enjoy FPS if you're fighting in a large battle.

They need to let you seperate groups of the same unit, or select starting forces and reinforcements. At 100 its not so bad, but at 200 of the same type in an army of 500, you tend to get 2/3 archers or infantry or cav and not a balanced army.

I think you can edit all the text/translate-not-terribly because it's all just in the .txt files in the module folder, but I haven't really done any modding.

It's because each unit is the same size, if you only have 2 types of units then in a bandit fight (aka not fuckhuge fight) then you'll have two units of forty, and the elite samurai unit will have 10 samurai and 30 ashis.

The scaling thing is just the total battle size, so 30% makes the battle faster while 200%+ makes it incredibly slow

Right but I have army attached, but in battle unit #1 is named "Samurai Elite" despite having only 1 elite samurai, a few other samurai, and then a bunch of ashigaru (both yari and naginata) AND 4 shiganhei
Then my #2 unit is 24/24 shiganhei, and named shiganhei as appropriate.
So I'm a bit confused as to how it all deploys. I guess it's just trying to make coherent units of a same type, but I have such a mash it sort of just blends units together and then names em after the strongest unit.
The battle deploys in a manner basically like Warband, because I'm in 'warband-scale', but actual full-sized ARMY scale seems to fuck with your actual numbers a shitton, so your 80 mans can be a 1000 strong battle - probably because the game caps you at having only 80 recruits in your army at once? Or maybe that's just recruits from a town.

Question about Warwolf armies
How do the generic "army" units you recruit in towns work, especially opposed to the mercenary units and such? Do you go into battle with a ratio of archers, infantry, and cavalry, equal to your army number? Is it meant for auto resolve?

My notes, that I'm building.
Warbands:
-AKA "not having 9000 armymen with you, just like normal Warband"
-capped to 80 recruits/mans in party.
-Deploys them on the map into a bunch of different, equal-sized units (eg 24 men in each one)
-Combines units of different types to fill a unit (eg unit #1 might take from various tiers of infantry), but tries to make the units the same type of troop.
-Names the units after the strongest troop in it.
-Troop limits (for here and Army) have tier limits of: T6 25%, OR T5+T6 50% OR historical limit of firearms
Armies:
-Larger scale vs smaller-scale 'warbands'
-Needed to siege cities and fight most lords and otherwise be an actual threat to factions.
-Basically Warbands with a ton of "Army" units
-"Army" unit seems to be an abstract number to scale a fight up beyond what is simply listed in the party (eg 10 teppo samurai in the party screen might become 50+ in an army fight, depending). The scale seems to vary, especially because you can change it in the pre-battle screen.
-"Army" unit also inflates numbers so that it works like normal warband, to determine battle advantage.
-"Army" units also have a cost to maintain, feed, etc.
