So I know I'm bad at video games, but the hitboxes in this game infuriate me. Also are there Cooldowns or anything on parries? I attempt to parry Gerhman in the same frame each time, and 80% of the time the parry will fail or will pop as he's launching me into the air.

My guess is that at some point in development, they wanted to do Dark Souls 1 style world design where you couldn't warp from the start. So having two bridges between central and cathedral with a different boss on each one made perfect since, since there are NPCs and dialogue and stuff that requires you to travel back and forth between them.
Once they scrapped that idea and gave you warping from the start, there was no reason for that door to ever be unlockable.

I had PS+ until about a week or two ago. I haven't had enough time to play recently, and the games I have been playing are offline (just finished Nights of Azure) so I couldn't justify the cost of renewing. The only reason I kept renewing it for as long as I did was because of the PS+ games, but they have been absolute shit for several months in a row now.

I've found that cold abyssals, especially with the the secondary effect of a flat amount of whatever element I'm using, are crazy good. Even on the LHB, which already has great scaling, a 22.6 ARC scaling +14 fire damage gem outdoes a similar 26-ish% fire gem.

Honestly I love the coop in this game. It's a ton of fun at every level, especially if you can hook up with someone, even it's some random fuck on this general. The PvP is entertaining as well, although it's not everyone's cup of tea. Not to mention you can't use chalice glyphs or see messages without PS+. I bought PS+ just for this game, and I haven't regretted it.

I switched out to the HMS to break the face more easily. after it was broken, I noticed an approximate 300% increase in damage. I was doing over 1700 with a fully charged R2 only hitting with the projectile. The only downside to this method is doing massively decreased damage until the face is broken. Strength is the best for PvE, it gives you the widest variety of weapons at the beginning of the game and is great for staggering bosses.
Just go all the way to 50 and put 25 points in skill for strong viscerals.

Skill does power up your visceral attacks, but in early game there are more strength than skill weapons. On my first playthrough I just ended up with an imperfect strength build, and went with other builds on further playthroughs.

The axe is a great starting weapon, that tricked R2 is one of the best moves in PvE. The pistol is good too, it does more damage than blunderbuss and hits at range, although the blunderbuss is better at reliably getting those close range parries.
