You know what else is never shown in the games, but mentioned in the lore? Vampires emerging from frozen lakes, the appearance of snakes and whales, and many more.
I'm pretty sure that lore-wise, they should be more powerful than that, but they were dumbed down for gameplay reasons. Like in SKyrim for example, you can kill ghosts with all kinds of weapon, but in the previous games, you need enchanted or silver weapons to deal more than one damage to them.
