Honestly, several SSRs recently have great designs but look awful when put into songs in 3D. For some examples, Ranko's dress clips into itself like some abomination, Miku's paws look ridiculous in any song that involves hand/finger movement, Yoshino's sleeve extension thingies flop around like living tentacles, Koume's sleeve wobbles around like there's some heavy mass inside it.
As for Minami, I prefer her in the default SS dress as I think she looks a lot cuter in it, but her SSR dress is one of those that don't have any such problems, and that in itself makes it one of the better ones. So is Anya's for that matter. Sometimes simple is best.

Why do SSR outfits need absolute JRPG-worthy eclectic designs? There are other ways to judge an SSR outfit, and you can have your opinions about whether you personally like a particular outfit or not...But it first and foremost has to fit a character image; if it's relatively easy on design but fits the image of the idol wearing it, then it fucking works.

The newer models have more intricate details. I didn't like the drab color scheme in Ranko's new ssr, but the details at the fringes of the skirt, on the inside of the skirt and on the headpiece look a lot more complex than what's found in older ssrs. Others like Koume and Kaede have richer shading.

New Gen SSR outfits are an outlier as much as their R outfits, in that they're obviously a unit push that doesn't allow individuality, designed as a poster promotion for the game in general. I don't think it was that farfetched. Even if it may not have seemed like a lot, apparently Nana voters helped out Sugar Heart. Sugar Heart herself was in the top 50 of the unvoiced election within the same year she was revealed, so she was kind of a rising star. She might have floated just underneath the top 50 in the 2015 election, but we don't know that because they don't want to ever show us full 183 idol count results of each election. Which is sad, but I guess showing the last place would be depressing for those who support a very unpopular idol.

Shizuku's SSR has a pretty high quality plaid texturing compared to the much older SSRs with plaid textures. The tassle accents look really convincing as well.
If there's one thing they've definitely improved upon, it's texturing in general.

While it was always a fan thing, it didn't quite get proper exposure in the mobage until the July 2015 event that officially featured the two together, which came after the election.
Though I'm not convinced actual NanaPs contributed much either.
Rather, since Nana's almost always high up every year, those simply amused by the possibility of having the two of them rank together this particular year where the election was relatively dragged out and gacha power was much lower than previous years were probably a bigger influence. I'd venture to guess a lot of them were unvoiced CutePs whose idols wouldn't have a shot at all in the running. The difference between Sugarheart and Yuzu wasn't really that large at 382,744 to 370,486 respectively.
A much larger drop followed after with Fumika at 343,452.

Alright /@/, are there any idols that really came around for you over time?
There are a couple for me, and they were mostly all from CG.
- Miku, Her anime introduction made her seem like a vein selfish person, but drama tracks and more have actually made her one of my favorite CGs.
- Kirari, I couldn't stand her voice for a quite a while, but I've come to accept it and she's pretty cute.
- Chieri, I just found her somewhat bland, but that one Nico stream with her seiyuu competing with TakeP in Taiko was incredibly memorable, it even got a little nod in the last CG episode I think.

In 765, Hibiki really came around for me after I realized how solid her singing was. Also hair down Hibiki is gorgeous.

I recall strongly disliking Yukiho back when I was an Imas newfag. I'm not really sure when or why I eventually came around to her though. It was probably though /@/ brainwashing.
As for CG, it took awhile before I was able to start taking Uzuki and Mio seriously, considering how they were early on in CG history.
I used to be a much bigger fan of Anzu and Kirari, and Miku.
Then amidst the different drama tracks as well as the CG manga, I began to fall more and more in love with those two.
Now I'm probably one of the biggest NGfags here.Also, my secret shame is that I only started taking particular interest in Anya as her own character after the anime amped up the gay. Prior to it, I simply viewed her more as an accessory to Ranko and Miku.

Ami and Mami, who I was convinced I was going to hate when I first got into iM@S (and for a while, I did). Then something changed over the span of about a year and I'm not sure what it was, but now they're my favorite of the OGs.
Also, most of ML's cast. I was initially very dismissive of ML when it first came out, and it took a while for me to admit that I wasn't actually giving it a fair chance. Turns out that ML has some of my favorite girls in the entire franchise.
iM@S for me in general has been a lesson in "stop judging things that you haven't actually fucking given a fair shot yet".

Last year, she successfully auditioned for the role of 2nd gen Love Live School Idol- Hanamaru Kunikida. To summarise, she went from being a cover singer of LL songs to an actual 2.5d School Idol in the new series. In other words, imagine playing backyard football in a Man U jersey and ten years later actually playing for Man U.

In any case, Love Live is huge compared to other idol franchises, even Bamco's own Aikatsu. And there is this "rivalry" between some retarded fans, which could very well lead to problems if an existing Love Live VA was picked for a CG role.
Then there could also be conflict of interest problems because Love Live is a collab, whereas Im@s and Aikatsu are both Bamco's.
And it's not like Takatsuki is some amazing experienced VA for them to pick her while she already has a major idol role.
I frankly don't see it happening.

Tsuda Minami is Hime from S4 in Aikatsu Stars! but she only does the voice not the singing. Same thing with Yurika-sama in the old Aikatsu voiced by Manami Numakura.
