Dunno if you're still here, but the AI fights on its own for one battle/duration of the war. Can't remember which since I'm the fag last thread who said he forgot about his troop for a few days. If you missed a tutorial, you can reread them by going to Information in the main menu.
You can set the A.I. to do certain things in battle and to take certain routes on the map. When they return with a report (basically a replay of one of their battles), you can choose to see it. It's something to use if you want to level up your troops. In the full game you get multiple troops and members, so if you want to level up your shitty members, add them to a troop of strong members.
In the Detachment menu you can even have the AI battle itself with the troops you've made to work out strategies for how strong your team is and how you could improve when you head out to the field. If you only have one troop, you'll just see a clone battle which is pretty funny to watch.
