That's part of why I was curious in the first place. I've played through Strange Journey, it's essentially Etrian Odyssey with SMT mechanics and automapping, and MC level ups are random. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in first person dungeon crawlers.
I'd also recommend Soul Hackers, which is older and less polished but still has a lot of fun moments and is easier than most games of its kind.
