Search is your friend, use it to find Sims, Events, Groups, and People.
Join groups that share interests in what you're looking to do. Talk to the people in the group so they can direct you to the sims and where to get gear for your avatar. A lot of times people will give you free stuff just by being in the group.
You can also type in Free in Search and it will give you a list of places that have free stuff.
If you get stuff that's boxed or buy things off the website's marketplace you have to unpack it. To do this you take your stuff to a Sand Box, just search Sand Box. Go there pull the item from your inventory and drop it on the ground. Click on the item and choose "Open". The items will then appear in your inventory.
The Marketplace also has a lot of free items to choose from.

The only reason people use SL over other virtual worlds is the massive amount of content it has, and the bigger userbase. There are actually a ton of virtual worlds that are exactly like SL - like, you can even use the same viewer and everything - but hardly anybody uses them because the content is all incredibly dated primshit and barely anyone is on at any given time.
Unless Linden Labs can address the content gap, either by directly transferring SL's massive catalog of products into the new world or otherwise convincing creators to start making stuff for the new world alongside/instead of SL, people are going to be slow to transfer over. Not everyone has the skills to create their own avatar, house, furniture, etc. from scratch, and many of those that *can* create those things won't bother if there's no profit to be made.
In the meantime, I suspect that content gap will keep SL relevant for a few years after the release of the new project.
