I've already finished the game, and am currently looking into the fictions found on the forums.
Playing through Katawa has made me question a few things about myself, namely what I want my life to be like along with whether or not I actually want any kind of relationship with other people (and I mean that in a very literal sense).
I probably can't talk about what I'm getting to without context. I'm 21 years old and there's two things about me that are worth mentioning. The first is that I'm a loner. I'm talking about 99.9% percentile introverted. I feel uncomfortable if any person is within even 50 meters of me. Deliberately go out of my way to minimize contact with other people unless its absolutely necessary. Now, there's a couple reasons that people usually do this - social anxiety, can't talk without spaghetti spilling all over, etc. But that's not the reason why I do this. The reason I do this is the second thing that should probably be mentioned - I suffer from paranoid schizophrenia (not the meme kind either, I mean I've been confined to a mental hospital in the past) and have an extremely difficult time trusting anyone. Any kind of interaction I have with others involves putting on an insincere smile, acting normal, while internally screaming "who are you? Get away, please get the fuck away from me oh god". Basically imagine Kenji minus all the feminism, except entirely serious and played realistically rather than as a background comic-relief character.
The problem here should be obvious. I'm still human. And despite having been completely desensitized to being alone (often because I legitimately want to be alone) I still feel the need for a level of companionship, albeit not nearly as strong as other people seem to. My condition hasn't too strongly affected my life (Doing pretty great in college with a steady 3.5 GPA and all)

The question of "can you face your fears?" is a tough one for me, though. Often times because my fears are literally hardwired into me and even with medication I can't overcome them. I'm terrified of other people, I really am. Hence why I mentioned before that I have extreme trust issues that come not only from my condition but from personal experience as well...Which is probably why Hannako pulled my heart strings so much.
