I like the zephyr more as its easier for randoms to use if they are ever around and easier to put rounds on a target of your choosing at ranges greater than 100m, unlike the duster.

Zepher is usable in far more circumstances, but the duster is what'll get you off when it works out right.
If you find a biolab fight where the attackers are on the platform, or your guys have just been pushed off the platform - a duster can work wonders here. As in, 15+ kills per magazine wonders. It's the most effective way to either clear a biolab assault, or farm one. I've run kamikazi flights into biolab extreme flak zergs due to how good it was. Gunner and pilot go bail assault with a comp armour duster lib - you can get at least 1 mag out before the 50 heavies on the pad down the lib, and then you can c4 a few more. Basically guaranteed 20+ kills for the gunner, and at least 3 or 4 for the pilot, all in the course of about 10 seconds.
Generally, 90% of the time you want a zepher though. You only grab the duster when you know there is the perfect farm for it. Esamir occasionally has these, and Hossin sometimes does too.

Well, 3.14 is definitely a decent scope for it. It's a fun gun. Not the worlds best, but it's unique. Go for the headshots, and don't try outsnipe the snipers. If you want to be the ultimate memer, get the smoke grenade launcher and IRNV scope. You can resupply smoke grenades off your engineer pack. Just watch out for people running MLG pro settings with their smoke turned off.

That's the exact opposite of what it does. It increases hits to kill between 8-10m in exchange for +30m/s to velocity (lol) and not decreasing hits to kill at any distance.

By sliding out where the minimal damage range begins, HVA is essentially sliding out where the middle damage tier of most carbines is located, in terms of meters. This being in exchange for causing the drop to begin earlier.
This is a direct punishment for any weapons that do not have multiple damage tiers. You're lowering the distance you can get say a 6 shot kill, in exchange for nothing. Where, if you've multiple damage tiers, you're sliding out the range you can get a 7 shot kill a fair bit (as opposed to needing 8 at X distance), in exchange for slightly worse 6 shot kill range.
Basically, new HVA is shit. The only guns it has any effect on were far better before, because most of the guns that got the +10, 15, 20% velocity boosts were carbines. Instead of being an attachment worth bringing on carbines and nothing else, it's now worth bringing on nothing but said carbines, and is very situational on carbines, because you don't get even half the velocity boost.At least, I think that's how it's all supposed to work.

How do I properly use the TMG-50, besides trying to improve at hitting heads?
I lose most close range engagements, especially against enemy Heavy assaults. Is it just the low RoF putting me at an extra disadvantage?

95% of this game is knowing when to fight and when you're in a bad spot

That feel when I payed back at that time, and remember the ebin crown fights and shitfuckery like that. The game had soul back then. I wasn't even on that server, but the game in general was so much more alive. Dumb stuff like having a VS mega-fortress behind your lines was fun. It felt like such an achievement to take them. There is absolutely no way they can ever get back the fun of those times. The only base that gives even remotely similar feels is SNA or some parts of Hossin, because I've never played there.
I wish I wasn't so poor back then, I could've so easily bypassed the cert grind and upped my fun levels, instead of leaving for 2 years.

also "smarter" is a subjective point of view when the game is both: A)more fun to play as infantry and B)requires storming objectives to win.

I knew a guy with like a 45 KD because all he ever did was farm with a prowler and redeployed whenever an enemy got within a mile of him.
