I needed a four letter name and at the time I wanted to play a soldier profession while wearing the Zephyrite Wind Helm. Guardian is my favorite profession and it seemed to match; a transparent but aquamarine aegis, the color blue being on the wind helm itself, and I cannot recall if the guardian was a mashup of either the paragon or the dervish with the monk profession, but earth and wind prayers were two attributes used by my favorite GW1 profession, the dervish.
Lani is a hawaiian name for sky, heaven. I also liked the phrase, "Go whichever way the wind blows," which can be seen with negative connotations (an indecisive person who easily bends to the demands of others) but I found it fitting for the adaptive, spontaneous nature of the College of Dynamics, my favorite asura college which is.. also represented in a blue banner, lol. They learn from their mistakes, that failure is only failure is nothing is learned from it.
From the beginning I wanted an asura with Pit Fighter's straps so that only reinforced my decision to make a female asura guardian, plus I wanted my character to be a secretary/Vigil tactician and I found that role fitting for a guardian that cannot quite fight on her own, instead relying on the protective magic that a guardian can provide while servicing someone of superior military rank-- a sidekick, a supportive backup who tends to the cardinal errands of her mentor.
Guardian reminded me of dervish but I guess revenant fits that niche better now, I can't even tell if guardian fits the old monk vibe with druid now in the mix, mmh

HOPE: No regrets. It was my first and it is pretty neat and felt good making it.
Astralaria: My least favorite out of the HoT ones I made. It was a lot easier but I don't tthink I get nearly as much mileage out of it. If I could refund the gold I spent I would desu.
C&C: I liked this one. The questing felt fresh and was fun and new. I am excited for future legendaries (if they ever come out) because this one was the most fun to do. It costed a lot more but overall I am happy with it.

It's not gear. It's lern2play issues and also your last point, versatility. Only half the group is reliable in each of the current encounters and have had plenty of time (months) to get used to them.

I can see basically two reasons.

They thought people might run it and it's true - it was run back in the day when people weren't as familiar. It was always the intention that you could ignore defensive or healing stats if you were good enough and when people got good enough it stopped being a thing for most groups.

Tanks/healers exist in sPvP and the "Bunker" (who is basically a role that is a combination of both) needs to both be durable and throw out healing to keep his allies alive and to survive picking them up if/when they do go down. This isn't really a role that you can fill without at least one of these stats and typically not without both.
While Anet has sort of reigned-in duplicating new PvP stat distributions to PvE (Paladin, Sage, Mercenary, etc. aren't in/never did make it to PvE, only sPvP) at launch all three game modes had access to all the stat distributions. The only exception, I think, is that I'm pretty sure Wayfarer's (a +Magic Find set, yes, that used to fucking exist) was only in PvE/WvW. whether having everything everywhere was because they thought shit like Cleric would actually be competitive in PvE with Zerker or they just did it for sake of consistency is unclear.
