Split damage is really, really bad at super low level.
It gets better around midgame, and then progressively gets worse into endgame level ranges.
Basically, your starting flat elemental defense is huge and totally outdoes the amount of elemental damage you can get at that point. Most split damage weapons deal their minimum damage against players at that point.
As you level, you gain much more damage than you gain defense, so any scaling elemental damage will quite quickly outpace flat defenses and actually become meaningful. This peaks around the point when you have a +10 weapon and enough levels for ~30 or so points in relevant scaling stats. From then onwards, the damage gained from leveling is so negligible that the flat defense gained from leveling actually accumulates at a higher rate, and the weapons progressively get weaker relative to pure physical ones the further you go.
So the best level range to use the dancer's swords is probably level 50-80.
Also, I'll let you in on a little secret: its elemental damage scales with physical stats and vice versa. It scales with all 4 attributes at D (str/dex/int/fth), but each of those attributes contribute to both the physical and elemental components. A quality build with the dancer's swords and base casting stats still nets it about 100 bonus scaling fire and magic damage.

Toothpicks will bounce on it, giving you a free high damage punish.
It's very easy to react to anything with Perseverance, as you get the poise instantly, meaning you can activate as soon as you see the opponent using their attack and still get the poise going.
Carthus Curved Sword is pretty good.

people consistently underestimate the value of absorption. so i crunched some fucking numbers
basically, if you're wearing anything lighter than Dancer's set (that's the inflection point in this image) you're a fool. wearing rags gives up almost an ember's worth of effective health. after that yes, heavy weight armor is a bad investment, giving something like 1% effective health every 2 pounds
so you can get away with shit vit so long as your weapon kit isn't so heavy that you're wearing a worse set than Dancer's. if you are then you should get enough vit to wear Dancer's. some other good armor pieces include Chain Leggings, the entire Thorns set, Black Iron set, Gundyr's chest, Knight legs and gloves, and arguably Eastern set

The games tend to have references, all the way back to Demon's Souls (and Armored Core, but that's an entirely different type of game), but the plot very much takes the back seat and is only important if you look for it.
Playing in order is reasonable, but most activity is in 3 at the moment, so go for whatever seems reasonable, depending on your time/money/access to a PS3.

If you're using Greataxe go 40/40 Refined, it outdamages Yhorm's and has only 30 AR less than the BKGA for much less weight. The range is a problem but that's what you bait mix-ups for, use Warcry and use some basic R1s and when they get in close use the R2.

I've been using the DGA ever since I got it. I'm at SL 71 now and have been doing some invasions and Darkmooning with it. Has pretty decent damage and the WA is hilarious if you can land it, edpecially near cliffs.
It's not the best weapon, but it's fun.

Dark Souls 3 follows on from Dark Souls more closely and both were directed by the guy who made the Souls series what it is ever since Demon's Souls.
DSII is a good game on it's own but it's the odd one out in the series and I don't really like how it feels or really looks or the world when you try to fit it in to the Dark Souls universe, it was directed by other guys.
Aw ye, I jsut got my 2nd ending. As cool as the Lord of Hallows ending was though, the "Taking the Fire" ending is still the one i liked the most. There's something about giving the firekeeper the boot to the face.

Does lodes damage and has insane tracking. I regularly hit for 1k with a WA fully charged R2 in fightclubs, and if you hitstun with the windup swing it's a guaranteed hit.

Demon's Souls is a self contained universe, Dark Souls was a "spiritual successor" to it, kind of a reboot if you will.
Demon's is worth checking out if you enjoy the other Souls games and Bloodborne is a fun spin off with it's own self contained universe but a new take on familiar gameplay.

Controller if you can get your hands on one. If not, the default kbm controls are rubbish, but I'm pretty sure there's a mod floating around somewhere that makes it much more usable.
The game is very much made for controller though, so definitely that if you can.

I tend to bait with R1s, then follow with an R2 as they run in to punish. The weapon art'd R2s have hyper armor for nearly their entire duration, but NOT if you hold it down. Only during the run and two swings. If you see someone coming in and you're charging your R2 with intent to hold it fully, don't be foolish and keep holding. Letting go early isn't a bad thing and still does a lot of damage.Plus, I run brigands in my offhand because the WA R2 of the greataxe hitstuns long enough toland a followup hit with a regular axe.
