I'm reading a guide about getting CFW on 3DS right now because I want to change FE:F to Japanese voices. It says that you only need the browser to load the homebrew launcher and the homebrew launcher is apparently all you need to make the game use the Japanese VO if you already own the game (with HANS https://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/comments/47c7w6/fire_emblem_fates_hans_undub_version_3_silent/)
Did I get that right? I already own FE:F but going through that whole process only to change the voices seems a bit excessive. I'm not interested in piracy at all.

Realistically, no it doesn't. As long as you follow the instructions you're golden. Fuck, most of the stuff you can get wrong won't brick you, there are like 2-3 things you need to be sure to get right in order to not brick and they are very obvious.

Just another quick question out of curiosity - how exactly cfw differs from official firmware on 3ds? I mean, it is just the same firmware with removed anti-piracy checks and left backdoors to gain additional controls or the changes go even deeper?

Also, in case of installing a9lh, when you "link" emuNAND with sysNAND, does it basically replace the sysNAND content with emuNAND or take image of its content, modify it and then paste back, but with changed booting part, so it forces console to autoboot the SD card firmware instead of this left in internal console memory? Some guides mention how you can make 3ds boot into unmofidied official firmware with a9lh installed, so I assumed it might be like the second option.

A backup is a security copy.
You just copy a file and paste it somewhere else so if the one you are modifying gets fucked you can just restore the other one.

I downgraded from 9.8 to 9.2 using the gateway sliderhax method, with the unstable borken sysupdater back in the day.
I've created a new emunand from this before and updated it to 11.0, all seems well.
My question is, what's with the frankenfirmware idea? Am I running some kind of hybrid on my sysnand? Should I give a shit?

Okay, so, I got to part 4 on the OTP guide, and I had my rednand setup, and I misread that I was supposed to format my sysnand after that. Now it says to format my rednand twice. I have formatted it once, but I wonder, if it's supposed to go on a back and forth linking thing, where one format on one side unlinks, but then a format on the other side re-links, then does that mean that I should format only once?
