I played mmos in the 90s that had only 2 or 300 players logged in at any given time.
What they need to do, is not have stuff so spread out. Those games worked because there was consolidated group grinding spots, and people would just come on and play togeather for hours and hours.
An mmo really only needs good group grinding spots and classes with fun abilities.
You can kind of see this effect in the (not an mmo) diablo 2, looking at baal runs. That basically condenses down what you need for an mmo to be successful. A repetitive action done as a team, and people can make builds to do well at that action (look at the start of a new ladder before paladinbots show up, you have things like necros providing tanking for the party, good sorcs to tele, its a community effort to get those minnions killed)
Thats all you need. You dont need consumable content, you need good nonconsumable content.

A level 10 SP pot heals like 1.5k SP, a level 10 HP pot only heals like 2.5k HP
Not only does the drain heal me faster than a hitpoint pot does, but it saves me a lot of money because i dont really use HP pots anymore except in some boss fights, a SP pot can full heal me and have some SP left over for killing things.
Still never bought a campfire. Ive got two sp regen hats so my sp is actually pretty fast at coming back between fights if i just sit for a couple of tics.
Also i dont need to use it unless i mess up, usually. This is a very dangerous zone. Things are immune to sleep here, things are immune to stun. Ive basically got to use raise and gravity pole only. The big ones can only be raised, gravity poled, and bloodbath animation locked, the mages too. The flying jellyfish can be stunned but not slept

Its the one point of confliction i have in this build. Because my self heal is on a cooldown, i feel like it would be really nice to have like 30k hitpoints, then i can just full heal myself every cooldown and not have to worry. Which is why ive contemplated full con build in the past.

Now look at this game. The developers give you essentially hundreds of class combinations, its up to them to ensure they all work, just like its up to them to ensure that the 5 classes in the example before are all balanced.
This is one of the reasons i like strict class based systems, they have hope at being balanced, a system like this, or pure skill based systems, are always going to have horrible balance and be full of assholes.
You may say that part of the game is finding the good combinations, that the bad combinations exist specifically so people who dont know what they are doing fall into them and can be avoided. You are forgetting that this is an mmo. Its supposed to be a virtual world. You are supposed to come up with a character concept, and make it real in the game and that character is supposed to be viable. You are not supposed to make hundreds of builds to try out, you are supposed to transmute your essence into an avatar and coexist within the community as the embodiment of your aesthetics and passions. No build should be bad, and if a build is bad, thats a problem with the game, not with the player.

The problem is that around the turn of the century mmo worlds started becoming static and more about the mechanics themselves, instead of the mechanics simply facilitating the interactions in the world.
The interesting stuff should be events and lore and atmosphere and player interactions, not the way you kill stuff. That should be streamlined and fast paced and addicting with a few powerful, easy to understand, but difficult to master, skill synergies (between classes) to make grinding more enjoyable.

These kind of game are not possible with sharding though. The problem with mmos is mmo players. I want the 99% who were not playing in the late 90s to just go away so i can have my smallish communities of a few thousand managed with direct gm care to make living worlds.

- Shinobi is buggy as fuck. Barbarian C2 for frenzy and seism is not worth it for now, I should've went Swordsman 3. Clones are trash, don't respond correctly. Kunai is fucked up half the time.
- I like the build best because it triggers everybody when they see it, until they get raped in PvP
- IDK, I'll experiment a bit later when Orsha is back up. You almost never clone and auto attack with this build, you just clone, kunai, then get one shot by anything because of x5 damage.

I've never seen a game with open class choices where people pity grossly underpowered classes. They always kick them when they're down. It doesn't make much sense to pity them when they chose those classes knowing they sucked, anyway. They made their choice.
ToS is a little different since the huge number of classes and language barrier make it impractical to know how powerful each class is in practice, but the issue here was about warning people away from weak classes vs. letting them go into them without warning.

If it's a virtual world about roleplaying instead of video game numbers, then it should be possible to screw up. In the real world and in fantasy novels/tv shows/etc. there's lots of people with bad "builds" who fail. An RP-oriented game has no obligation to make anything viable since it's the player's right to roleplay a weak ass peasant if they want.
It is, however, bad mechanical game design to have shit classes. But it's also bad design to have no variety. 3-5 classes is really boring unless they're so vaguely defined you can say ToS has only 4 classes. You just described those 4 exactly in >>140908459. That would kill off one of the main attractions of the game and accomplish nothing other then preventing people from playing weak builds if they choose to.

If it ever happens they probably won't even call it an MMORPG because, as that fag pointed out, the problem with MMOs is MMO players. You'd have to start a new subculture instead of aiming for the mass market, but MMOs are too expensive to make without an existing target audience.

you can hook somebody, and have enough time to 5 bunshin then spam double slash with all your clones.
if you want to be not hated and shit on by everybody you see and tosg, go the PvE shinobi build. i honestly think this is good, fuck everyone else.
sword->pelt->hoplite->hoplite->corsair->corsair->shinobi
pelt for PvE and so everyone doesnt hate you
hoplite c2 for spear lunge aka infinite pierce damage
corsair c2 for hexen dropper (pierce op with spear lunge, crazy good steal) and hook and flag
shitnobi for 5x bunshin kunai pierce burst.
