I'm maybe going to continue reading Ayakashibito. I stopped the moment the retarded MC mentioned that he wanted to go to a fucking highschool.

Why the fuck would the author do this? They are on the run because some part of the government or something is after them and wants to kill them. Go to school is the last thing anybody would think of doing in a situation like that. It's even worse than in Tokyo Babel.

It's a quote from the 古事記
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kojiki
If the text appears to be Chinese, it's usually directly taken from some old ass Japanese literature. Normal Japs can't read that either.
>>
>>140912334
What gives you that impression? Root Double is pretty well regarded from what I've seen (unless it gets meme-hated in this thread or something, I don't really visit this thread too often). Chances are the translation/editing is just shit. A translation is good enough to judge the basic overarching core of the plot as long as it isn't so horrendously bad that it manages to get even that wrong, but even the best of translations aren't enough to judge the writing beyond that since writing style pretty much entirely depends on the translator and editor and the original prose and writing style from the Japanese script are basically lost.
>>
>>140914597
Is it even something that can be tackled with patience? Like skimming through dictionary and adding words for eac kanji and then trying to make sense? Or maybe try to write down what he says in hiragana and try to understand it.
>>140914640
Too bad cause the voiceover doesn't sound chinese at all.
>>140914806
Well fuck. Other chants are thematical(Kei about child of a fire god, Ren - about time and Faust ) but at least understandable.
>>
>>140914916
I mean the text/prose specifically, not the plot writing. Conjueror said the same thing about the original game, every sentence is basically a "He did this. Then he did that.". Really repetitive.
>>
>>140915043
>Like skimming through dictionary and adding words for eac kanji and then trying to make sense

I don't think you'll get that far since most words are probably not listed in dictionaries, not even ones focusing on kobun. You'd have to learn some really old grammar too. Being able to read ancient literature is no easy task no matter what language.

In cases like these, I googled parts of it or looked up the respective chant on the Masada wiki. But that's all I did, if nothing conclusive was found, I moved on. I frankly didn't have the patience to dissect each chant, it really takes you out of the reading flow. Gare didn't bother deciphering all the chants in KKK either.
>>
>>140915125
who the hell cares about what conjueror thinks

only moogy's opinion counts.

>>140914408
i've been reading for less than 3 months and I can recognize more than half of those kanji and know the readings for probably 1/4th.
But of course I'd have no clue to what the hell it means. Its okay, I'm not touching masada until after 1-2 years.
>>
>>140915638
Also, Kain's chant is pretty much the only complicated chant in Dies. The rest are easy. KKK is where it gets hard.
>>
>>140915769
Oh, and I guess Mercurius' chant is in latin.
>>
>>140915872

Why don't VNs ever promote safe sex?
>>
>>140917796
Yeah. B route slowly introduces you to the setting, so if you take A second, you know most of the stuff and it's not a suspense anymore. Though it's still enjoyable because there are mysteries that are left unanswered here.
I started B first and enjoyed the game. Also, you won't get a feel trip at B if you start A first. So, your choice.

Chinese always looks insanely ordered, compact, and elegant in comparison to Japanese, which is always meant to flow.
你是一个柴草 Chink

あなたはホモです Nip

Conversely, if you want to detect Korean its simple as fuck. Are there tons of circles? Its fucking korean. In order to become part of the korean master race you have to perfect making circles and curves like a master.

당신은 게이입니다 SC2

Fuck the other character languages other than russian because you can spot the language of the squatters cosplaying as Hellen Keller.
>>
>>140924139
Oh I also forgot.
Curves are mostly illegal in chinese. Their fucking square ideology from 4000 years ago still applies today to the language.

Remember folks. Its not that hard to tell the three primary languages of the east from eachother, even if you'll never learn them. Telling the people apart though is still impossible.
>>
>>140924139
If you don't know the kanji/hanzi, Japanese and Chinese are L I T E R A L L Y indistinguishable at times. If you don't know kana, they're ALWAYS indistinguishable.
>>
>>140924530
Well, I'm mostly familiar with identifying them outright. I'm aware that there's similarities between the two languages but as a rough guideline its worked most of the time.

I haven't touched learning either language in years and I'm more familiar with russian and italian since those two have been my focus as of late.

For most stuff, it only matters wheter you put it to 4/8 or 7/8, though there are a handful where 1/8 or 8/8 are also important.

While it's overall important, it's not that hard to figure out after a while, for me a rule of thumb of "good feelings about x" -> put it to 7/8 while "bad feelings about x" -> put it to 4/8 worked.

And would have liked it better if I said children instead of kids?
The point is the same anyways. Rejecting different opinions so much is typical underage behavior
More so than liking stuff like Tokyo Babel.
Who said there's an age limit to liking anything?

I feel like if you don't like moege and nukige then you'll have a much harder time really enjoying VNs, but there's plenty of plot games and such to last a while. Putting aside even novels like Muramasa, Dies Irae, and Island which are practically on the level of literature, you've got plenty of just plain good stories to be found. Not nearly as many stories as good porn though.

The only thing that puts Daitoshokan ahead of other Moege (aside from all the true route stuff) is that the writers are *really* good (and thus the jokes are funny, the character interactions enjoyable, etc). So I don't really know what you mean. Daito still has a dumb cultural festival, a thinly veiled harem with only 1 significant male character, etc.

I'm in the midst of translating a novel right now and I'm growing increasingly convinced that it's impossible to precisely translate anything between any two languages. Everyone word is just so thoroughly different, down to the sound it makes and how it feels, the nuance and usage behind its word, the historical context of the word, it's just impossible to translate. You can make a translation that resembles the original, but it will never be the original. Sometimes imitations can surpass the original, sometimes they can't. But what I'm becoming convinced of is that no translation can truly "be" the original. It will always be an imitation, a reflection in a different form. If someone wants to read kamige, they have no choice but to learn Japanese.

VNs are the offspring of adventure games. If you play 1990-era VNs from like Elf or Alice Soft you'll find they practically always involve a significant amount of manual movement, choices, etc etc. In a Ship of Theseus type problem, choices were gradually stripped out until nothing remained but the text. So VNs used to be games, but gradually removed game elements, which is why we're in a weird place right now. Modern VNs are move like novels than games, older style vns are more like games than novels. That's about it.
>>
>>140940229
I prefer VNs without gameplay.
>>
>>140939765
Writer here. I've thought about making some of my unpublished stories into visual novels, and I don't believe this at all. I had to fuck up the first chapter of the story incredibly hard, just to make it fit into a workable pace. Took out paragraphs and paragraphs of description that simply don't work in visual novels without destroying their flow.
>>
>>140940383
The definition of novel is "a fictitious prose narrative of book length". Whether the style of prose is different is irrelevant. That said I've read a couple VNs written with book-like narration, so if you couldn't manage it then that makes you a failure of a writer, frankly.
>>
>>140940502
Care to name one or two of those VNs? I'm interested, can be in Japanese or English. I've never seen anything that could be transferred into book form before without significant changes.
>>

>>
>>140940742

>>
>>140940742

>>
>>140940742

>>
>>140940718
Rail Soft. 'Nuff said. Sayonara o Oshiete also reads like a novel to me. Umineko, at times, got heavy book vibes.

However, like I said, this is all kind of irrelevant. The definition of novel is very clear cut, and even though VNs often require different styles of writing that doesn't mean they aren't novels.
>>
>>140941001
They aren't.
>>
>>140941070
I'd like to see you try and back this up with a solid argument.
>>
>>140940742

>>
>>140941001
I'm not fighting that at all, anon. Writers like Tao Lin and other postmodern writers that can write 'ha ha ha' on every page are technically considered models. I'm only talking about ones that would transfer mediums well, without much mangling

>>
>>140941214
>I'm not fighting that at all, anon.
I took that attitude because
>Writer here. I don't believe this at all.
Made me think you meant you didn't believe VNs were novels. If you just meant you didn't believe people put 1:1 novels into VNs, well, it happened so I don't know what you could contest.
>>
>>140941214
NVL style VNs are generally closer to literature in terms of having descriptive prose. As far as translated VNs go, Swan Song (although the translation destroys the prose) is probably the closest to being written like a pure novel, followed by Saya no Uta.
I agree with you that VNs really shouldn't be considered the exact same as novels, they clearly aren't. Not only the visuals/audio but they definitely require their own style of pacing.
>>
>>140940742
Above average. The girls are fun, the MC is interesting if you don't mind power fantasies, the drama is frequently shit.
>>
>>140940742
Can be both?
I found it entertaining although I admit the common route was dragged out.
>>
>>140941580
I misspoke, you're right, I meant I didn't believe they couldn't be converted 1:1.

Are the novels you mentioned actual converted novels then? If not, which are? Because I'm still skeptical
>>
>>140941594
>I agree with you that VNs really shouldn't be considered the exact same as novels, they clearly aren't.
Please use more precise language. VNs SHOULD be considered the exact same as novels, because they are novels. You will have to be more specific about what you mean by "novels" if you want to distinguish things. Modern style print narrative novels is what I presume you meant.
>>
>>140941859
The novels I mentioned were VN originals written in the style of novels. As for novels literally turned into VNs, there's plenty of cases on the PS2, for instance Kino no Tabi got one. Cheap to make.

>VNs SHOULD be considered the exact same as novels, because they are novels.
You simply cannot judge VNs and literature on the exact same criteria. For one thing, descriptive text isn't even a requirement for VNs, while it is for novels. Something like Hanahira for example is 100% dialogue with no descriptive text whatsoever.
>>
>>140942356
See, your language is so damn sloppy I'm not even going to continue this discussion. No point in discussing the meaning of words like this.
>>
>>140941859
>they could** be converted.
>>140942193
Light novels are pretty similar to visual novels in terms of their language, but I guess you've got a point.
>>
>>140942356
Hanahira actually isn't considered a visual novel by the majority of serious fans. It doesn't even pass the requirements given by VNDB. It just stays on there 'cause it looks the part. So using that as an example is a very poor choice.
>>

>>
>>140943384

>>
Man I think VNs made me softer, and not in a bad way.

I remember when I first started reading them, I would hardly feel emotion when presented with simple but what someone else would find a "touching" moment. Now a few years later, something simple brings me to the edge of tears, or fills me with joy and happiness.

I've read a few books, watched tons of movies, shows and series, and none have that effect on me.

I wonder what it is about VNs that bring that out in me.
