Other supports expanding the AoE/coverage of a skill have a less damage multiplier (LMP/GMP/Melee Splash and so on). Conc Effect has a more damage multiplier but also a less area penalty you need to compensate.

Pierce allows you to hit 50% more targets (even more with 100% pierce) and it comes with a damage boost too. The fuck's GGG balance team thinking?

Flasks are a huge part of my defense, so them being up basically all the time is amazing. And the flask+mana nodes give me enough mana that I don't run a mana pot unless i'm doing a no regen map. Rallying cry OP

I'd give whirling blades three charges, change the math so there was no double dipping reduce earthquake's damage multiplier to practically nothing, same treatment to pierce, give CoC the Mjolner treatment and lower it to 30% chance to cast, remove all increased fortify effects on Champion, and while I'm at it make guardian, deadeye, trickster, ascendant and occultists balanced by removing them from the game.

ok, it's not a bug, caustic arrow gives 30-49% of phys dmg as extra chaos damage. iron grip the keystone applies strengths bonus to projectile attacks (5 str = 1% melee dmg, so 1% phys projectile damage). the support gem does that AND adds projectile damage.. projectile damage scales the chaos damage. the strength scaling works from the keystone because it is PHYSICAL damage, which caustic arrow gains as extra chaos damage.

The Iron Grip gem only scales it with it's shit % increased projectile damage that's on the gem. You'd never use the Iron Grip gem over something like Slower Proj, which has a way better more multiplier

Let me be totally and completely honest about my Path of Exile skills.

I love this game. I play a lot, not like 10+ hours a day, but I like to think it's up there. I only play Hardcore, I've only traded for an item once, and I have no other friends who play PoE.

I feel like I'm missing out on half of the game because I die. A lot. I die so often that I've never gotten to the map section of the game. Ever.

But I love the rerolling process, and making new characters is exciting to me. Sure I could play standard, get out of hardcore, but I really enjoy the high-stakes thrill of permanent death.

I know that half of the Perandus league challenges - the ones to do with mapping - will never be complete on my account. It's frustrating, but I accept it. I simply don't play the game in such a way that allows me to progress to that point. I feel like I enjoy making new characters more than I desire to reach endgame. I love new excuses to make a new character. I have 6 in Perandus HC all between level 30-60, just because I found an item for a different build I wanted to try out, or I found a quality gem, or because someone looked at me funny.

I think I'm the perfect candidate for race seasons, and events, and new leagues. I jumped on the Garena server as soon as I saw that 10 day race they were running. Why? Because hell yeah... I could make a new character! (I made a few already due to those nasty Volatile mods. They hit hard at level 2 and my poor Templars kept getting one-shot!)

My point? I don't know if I have one. I suppose part of me is really thankful that Chris Wilson and his team of rascals has made such a fun and challenging game. Not since Diablo 2 have I enjoyed playing for so long, despite not getting to the end game content. Even though I haven't made it that far, I love the game and keep trying (though only half-assed really) to get there.

This was a response to another thread, but then it became something else.

People lament the loss of Iron Lore but then we got Crate and the very good Grim Dawn. And while it could never measure up to Diablo, Torchlight was really great too. At a larger remove, the demise of many a band has led to amazing solo careers, or the formation of something much better. In short, not all endings are necessarily tragic. They really can be just the fresh start and freedom some people need and don't even realise it until they notice they're able to breathe once more.

You know where this is going, right?

One simple question.

Who knows what GGG devs might go on to make were they unshackled from the stone pendulum tied around their necks that PoE has become?

That's a harsh way of looking at it but it's important to remember what GGG were like during the beta of PoE.

I feel like we were witnessing a creative burst of epic proportions in 2012 with PoE, but something has definitely gotten stale since then. Where other game development companies might recognise this and start new projects, GGG obstinately keep adding layers of make-up to what is essentially an ugly game. And ugly is fine, ugly is raw and visceral and most importantly it's forced to be interesting. And if we're being honest with ourselves, were Ascendancy classes really that interesting? They provided new ways of doing the same old things. And okay, thats an ARPG but there are so many ways to push the definition of ARPG. The Labyrinth was one way, but even the Labyrinth starts to reveal its repetitive layout before too long. It's a long time in the making but that doesn't change the fact that it just isn't varied enough, doesn't go far enough to entice players to run it over and again beyond the forced appeal of prizes for racing. Blergh.

But ugly doesn't mean unfinished and make-up can't conceal a lack of true polish.

I can't put my finger on it but there seems to be an exhaustion underlining the game now, a feeling that "good enough" is increasingly the standard of work. We still have shitty character animations. Shitty minimap. Shitty chat and guild functions. Shitty text heavy character screen. Shitty white overlay to zone exits. These are all issues of polish. The lack of basic polish might be something hardcore gamers can excuse or ignore but to me they're indicative of a certain loss of desire to improve the game rather than just adding more crap for people to do.

I've been watching a lot of dev videos from other games, particularly Smite since it's another one game one company deal, and it astounds me how they never stopped tweaking the UI, effects or other points of basic polish. How one build of the game looked perfectly fine to me but then the next was just so much better. This is what designers do, after all. They see ways to make things better for the user that the user can't even imagine or expect. They strive for almost unnecessary excellence, giving the user confidence that this isn't just a good game. It's an excellent product with excellent creators.

And GGG haven't done that for this user in a very long time. The biggest UI overhaul was strictly horizontal, trading one pair of iconic images for another. Whoopdedoo.

The spark might not be dead in the GGG office but I feel we're past the inferno's brightest point. GGG used to work smart and hard. Now it seems more like just the latter. And I firmly believe it's because what PoE has become in the past four years, or failed to become, is quietly sapping their enthusiasm. That too many things are in the too hard basket or the not that important bin. This is not where you want to be as a company dedicated to designing just one game.

PoE2 is financially not viable right now. And it's not because PoE hasn't made GGG a lot of money. It's because GGG and PoE are inexorably linked and any money GGG makes is from PoE and goes towards PoE. If one is excellent, so is the other. If one dies, so does the other. This is a frightening fact if you consider how other game developers do things. An old adage about eggs and baskets comes to mind.

GGG are right to be incredibly proud of PoE. It's still a miracle. It's not going anywhere in a hurry.

But let me repeat that sentence, with emphasis on a certain word.

Path of Exile is not going anywhere in a hurry.

Then again, neither are we.

So if this is it, if PoE is all we can expect from GGG for now, maybe it's time for GGG to redecorate our home. To stop adding more bland, uninspired content for the sake of content, catch their breath, rediscover why they made this game, work on polishing what we already have and maybe even fall in love with PoE again.

This isn't just a matter of the game's health anymore. I think leaving so many little things unfinished is affecting GGG's ability to deliver passionate, rewarding additions to the game. I imagine it would be frustrating as a designer to know there are some really crappy things in the game that have been there for years but being unable to fix them because you're being told to work on new stuff instead. It would be unfulfilling and boring. Which in turn produces unfulfilled, bored players kept not by an excellent, complete game but merely the cheap addiction of a good game lurking behind a roulette wheel. POE always had potential to be so much more than that, but I feel GGG are caught in a spiral where they feel the best way to stay afloat is to treat the game like a casino, and players like gamblers. I think a big part of this is because we put up with an inexcusably unpolished game, which sends GGG the message that we don't care about the game, just our compulsion to keep playing.

I love this game. I play a lot, not like 10+ hours a day, but I like to think it's up there. I only play Hardcore, I've only traded for an item once, and I have no other friends who play PoE.

I feel like I'm missing out on half of the game because I die. A lot. I die so often that I've never gotten to the map section of the game. Ever.

But I love the rerolling process, and making new characters is exciting to me. Sure I could play standard, get out of hardcore, but I really enjoy the high-stakes thrill of permanent death.

I know that half of the Perandus league challenges - the ones to do with mapping - will never be complete on my account. It's frustrating, but I accept it. I simply don't play the game in such a way that allows me to progress to that point. I feel like I enjoy making new characters more than I desire to reach endgame. I love new excuses to make a new character. I have 6 in Perandus HC all between level 30-60, just because I found an item for a different build I wanted to try out, or I found a quality gem, or because someone looked at me funny.

I think I'm the perfect candidate for race seasons, and events, and new leagues. I jumped on the Garena server as soon as I saw that 10 day race they were running. Why? Because hell yeah... I could make a new character! (I made a few already due to those nasty Volatile mods. They hit hard at level 2 and my poor Templars kept getting one-shot!)

My point? I don't know if I have one. I suppose part of me is really thankful that Chris Wilson and his team of rascals has made such a fun and challenging game. Not since Diablo 2 have I enjoyed playing for so long, despite not getting to the end game content. Even though I haven't made it that far, I love the game and keep trying (though only half-assed really) to get there.

I guess I'm just not that good at this game. And I love it.

Well yeah, you can't be a summoner duelist or a tanky melee shadow more than before. The real question is, when you think or a skill gem, or a build archetype, can you choose between more classes than before? The answer is yes.

It usually helps that ascendancies perks are usually generic modifiers that more generic with Scion's watered down counterparts. Think of assassin (generic crit), deadeye (generic projectile attacks), elementalist (elemental conflux), pathfinder (generic stronger flasks), etc.

You can be an occultist/deadeye ED ascendant and benefit from both even though you don't use projectile attacks or build around ES.

In my experience even with 150 quantity 20 packsize maps you tend to lose map tiers. This conservatory just gave me one tier 11, one tier 8 and two trash maps I didn't pick up. It was a 6 mods map with two pack sizes.

I would say CI builds are typically harder to gear in a relatively short 2-week race because they're reliant on good ilvl bases that aren't really flooding the market in the first week.
Life-based is much easier to gear and you don't need to spend dozens of regrets respeccing to CI and changing gear down the road.

And casters can be tanky. When I died at level 99, my rough defensive stats pre-flasks were as follow:

8k life
15k armour
~500 life regen
58/75 block/spellblock
20/20 enfeeble

See attached picture for stats with flasks up.

I died to a DC. Nothing could really touch me otherwise. Could run any map mods, even vuln+phys reflect was a joke (75% of reflected damage is blocked, and the rest were relatively small hits that were almost entirely negated by armour and life regen).

Keep in mind this was just my dumb, bruteforcing way to achieve tankiness. There are other ways to do so. BV Pathfinder for example is ridiculous if your computer can handle the fps and you can handle flask management. +% flask effect on flasks like Rumi's or a basalt is insane. Defensive curses are stupidly strong if you can run dual blasphemy curse, etc.

That's a specific case where projectile damage and bow damage are distinct. And that will undoubtedly be changed in 2.3 unless GGG have some really stupid developers. When you're not using the poison support gem for most everything else projectile damage and bow damage are the same stat for bow attacks.

The poison support gem double dips from any archetype of damage increase; trap, mine, totem, aoe, they all do it.

Another anecdote I have for the graphics problems is I was watching Cooterz playing a mine build and she decided to put Glacial Cascade in it. She thought it looked fun, and then found GC's Gore MTX, bought it, and applied it to the gem. She had the framerate graph on and regular GC didn't even phase it. Gore Glacial Cascade though? That noticeably impacted her framerate and after a few mine detonations to ensure it was definitely the MTX she was like "Uh, no. I'm not gonna do that if it'll hurt my frames."
