Not very. They require severe buffing--the best are Pyromancies, follotwed by Miracles, and then Sorceries. Most enemies are weak to fire and then to lightning, just like every DS game.

to the guy who said how to transfer saves over steam accounts. i havent tried it myself but try the DaS2 method.
open the game,
go into the game and create a new character,
go out and let the game save,
enter the load character screen, not the main menu screen
paste the save you want over the new save you just created,
go back into the game still on the load character screen (if you didnt do this the load game option will be greyed out),
load one of the characters,
you will most likely get an error,
go out of the game again,
make a new character again,
enter the game till the first point where you can play,
go out again,
now other saves should be playable
this is what i did in DaS2 and it work every time without any external programs or any ile corruption. give it a go if u want.

All you need is the Gem for infusing. You can start with the Fire Gem and have a Fire weapon the moment you enter Firelink.
Also Dark Gems and Raw Gems both drop in High Wall, so again, can infuse with those right away.

Brother I'm more speaking towards how I've played 3 builds and pyro is the one that is lacking all the way until near top levels. Your stats are spread too thin so you'll always need something. if you go glass cannon later game enemies and bosses are going to murder you while your charging a fireball.
