It's ultimately easier to design the world this way. You don't have to actually think about the distances between areas that you can see from Majula, for example. Heide's tower is like 5km away but you walk maybe a few hundred feet before reaching that area. Same with the big stone statues in the opposite direction, and so on. In Dark Souls 1 you can actually see from area to area at many points in the game and the distances are pretty spot-on. You can leave a prism stone in TOTG and walk to Ash Lake and see your prism stone floating off in the distance.

There isn't one. Nobody ever cared enough about 2 to do any substantial digging.
The basic gist is that the a king conquers a land, kills 4 big dudes that had inherited the lord souls and makes a new kingdom. After a while, he gets tricked into picking a fight with giants and they come and destroy his kingdom.
You're some random fuckoff cursed undead that's come here following a rumor that the king had an answer to the curse.
The king's brother is a crazy researcher guy with a fetish for dragons. He creates an artificial firekeeper that guides you through the game. You're essentially manipulated into becoming the successor to thew King so that you can take control of the first flame, which the king had never been able to claim for himself. That brother also turned himself into a giant tree monster that's bound to the bonfires, and may or may not return in DaS3 because he was basically a central character.
The only other important tidbit is that Manus broke into 4 fragments that each reformed into their own entity. These "Children of Dark" took a humanoid form and went around leading kingdoms to ruin so that they could steal the strength of their kinds. Drangleic was ruined because the king's wife was one of those manus-kids and her ultimate goal was to claim the first flame for herself.
That's about all that's worth knowing.

For PvP or PvE? PvE it is decent with nourishing gems. Can get something like 1300 off a primed jumping attack. The damage multipliers for the charge attack aren't much better, though, and the biggest boon in PvE is that it's primed jumping attack causes severe knockback.

If a company wanted to port to PC at the same time they could do so...provided they have the resources to do that.
