What weapons are you using? Were you using ranged and melee arts? You can't switch directly between yellow and orange overdrive, so you gotta use a blue/green/purple art first. Hits only apply to the counter if, for example, you use Zero Zero when you have yellow overdrive. Won't go up at all if you're using Zero Zero during orange, so you gotta switch it up. I'm pretty sure purple damaging arts will increase the counter no matter what, since it'll always change to purple.
I THINK if you do use another art right after specific orange/yellow/purple arts, the counter won't go up. Something about having to wait a split second and letting the hits actually land before you switch arts? I'm gonna need confirmation on this.

If you're switching from brown to yellow, or vice versa, those hits aren't counted. You need to use green or blue when switching between those. At least that's how I remember it works.

Spares: anything with Back + Back
My boost isn't quite at 100%, currently 92% (could be 97% with upgrades), and I don't really want to find a higher series Beam Shield to get the last couple %

I'm nearly at the end of disc 1 of Xenogears and it's been a fun ride, mostly. The game best aspect is probably all the concepts it throws at you, which aren't always executed as well as they could be. The best way I've seen it described is "a high-concept video game"; the premise itself is striking enough to make it worth playing.
Mind you it's also a PS1 Square Enix RPG that isn't as immediately enjoyably as some other Square Enix RPGs from the same era and I absolutely love outdated RPGs.

So how do people feel about XBX continents versus XBC's regions? I feel like X is more fun to get lost in like a big open field. Whereas XBC is pretty much a series of wide hallways that, while filled with lots of siderooms you can choose to explore, still funnels you towards the end. That said, more linear areas are a lot better for climactic moments in the game; there were very few in X and the ones that were in there were pretty memorable (like getting into the Ganglion weapons hanger out of skell). Most areas like that had shitty cameras though and enemies still aggro'd from way too far away.
Ideally in the sequel they keep the huge continents but also add more XBC style areas for dungeons/connecting continents (think Sword Valley inbetween Bionis and Mechonis, except Bionis and Mechonis are Primordia and Oblivia). And rework the camera so it doesn't shit the bed for cave areas like it does in X.

the ares is what everyone goes for because it's great to farm in and not all that hard to get with reward tickets. a 60 skell can be game breaking and is great for taking down telethia with a z cannon. diskbombs and drones are fun too. you can do a ton with the 60s. i would recommend an ares though, just cause you can use it to get a lot done, including farming for your 60.

And an unrelated question, but is there a list of where the research probes are? I have all of the probe sites unlocked and am utilizing all of the research probes I own and can only pull in like 93k credits. There's got to be more because the one quest I have says I need to pull 130k in a single return, and that's impossible with what I have now. I've been opening every treasure thing that pops up on my radar but it's always either a miming probe or like 200 credits or some shit.
