What the fuck is the point of using anything apart from the cleaver? The untransformed R1s are ridiculously fast and immediate, it's powerful as fuck and the transforming attacks are brilliant. It's also amazingly fluid, versatile and the stamina usage is very low. Even though the DLC gives you all these new fancy pants weapons I see no purpose for them when you've got the cleaver in the game. I think it was a mistake to include cleaver and saw spear. They make the other weapons feel redundant.

15 to 20 is the sweet spot for most builds
20 to 25 feels right for str builds

Take VIT to 50 no matter your build.
Your best build options right now are pure strength or str/arc (holy moonlight sword build).
If pure strength, take that to 50 and dump the rest in skill. If str/arc, get strength to 25 and then take arc up to 40. You might have to take some points from VIT if you didn't start with the optimal origin for your character.

Vitality is a pretty important, so you want to get that to around 50, but it's not mandatory. (I played with 37 vit until this christmas and did just fine). Like the other guy said, strength is what you want to focus on now. With some arcane on that. I'm assuming that this is your first playthrough, so pretty much forget about making a build. Just get str up where you want(hardcap is 50), maybe some into dex or blt if you like those weapons you find there. Arcane is quite the pve killer, but you really need to be almost entirely focused on it to make it work that well, same with Bloodtinge.
But essentially, get str up and dabble around in arcane.

Should I make a hintertomb chalice after beating Ludwig just so I can get the lost version as soon as possible? I don't want to waste any chunks so it's going to suck going through the whole game with a +6 weapon, and I went with the kirkhammer for something different but goddamn this weapon is kinda bad.
How about my stats? I have strength at 25, vitality at 28 and arcane at 18. I'm wondering if I should be putting 1 point in each every other level or if I just pump it all in vitality until it's at 40 since I'm not really getting much out of arcane until I get the sword.

This is what I run. Some people ditch the skill for more arc, but I like the boost to physical attacks and visceral damage.
Usually, I'll play a normal quality build until post-Amelia, then head to the forest, meet with Valtr, and have him carry you to an early HMLS. You don't need a hindertomb, depth 1 phrumerian root is fine.

I can only speculate wildly here, but I think they're Pthumerian, or were once Pthumerian, maybe undead, maybe just straight up ghosts. They guard the way to Byrgenwerth and Mergo's Loft.
Shadows implies they they aren't necessarily their own thing, just the shadow of something else, maybe Yharnam herself, or some aspect of her.
What about the snake powers, though? Where does that come from?
