As >>135815791 says ghosts take heavily reduced physical damage or priests with the correct skill. Slap them with Torako/Shizuka/etc or have Crook swap in the correct skill.
You can get pretty much anyone who isn't a shit civilian with a level cap of like 10 to usable state by taking them to the highest level Malgreed dungeon you can do and hitting the challenge battle events for 2-3 minutes. That's a lot less investment than it takes to get weak characters up to par in other JRPGs, or even other Rance games, honestly.
If you really can't stand grinding it's also entirely possible to beat everything that isn't some bullshit Gunagan sidequest with just the main storyline party members you get early as long as you don't any goofy shit like first time Moruruning your entire party at once.

One problem with Quest, that makes it really grindy, is that with all the level reducing because of the curse, and the fact that would be useful to have at least 3 parties worth of character up to speed, it takes lots of times to grind. And I always end up with a main party quite higher level than the rest.
To make it worse, there is even more than 15 characters on it I really like and would want to level, but then it's just too much of a hassle.

End game grinding isn't the issue, it's grinding in the mid game when you start getting people thrown at you at Level 1 with curse or Level 20~ without the curse. It gets much better when you get the lvl 1~35 map but even then it's time consuming to level the characters.

Don't remember, it's been almost 2 years since I did my run of Quest and I have zero intention of playing it again without massive abuse of a cheat engine to remove grind. I'm making my comments based on what I remember of playing Quest and the grind made the game a miserable experience for me especially the first and second of re-leveling with the curse. The only thing that kept me playing was the character interaction which turned out to be some of the best moments in the entire series

You drop 5 levels, but at least the amount of XP to level up again is a fixed amount (around the amount you need for level 34->35) which is a life saver when you're doing a high level one like level 65->60 and then to go back to 65 the amount of XP needed is negligible.
Of course, that was added with Magnum. In the original quest you needed the full exp always.

I just started with Hiragana. I did one year of Japanese in primary school about 15 years ago. I'm surprised I still remember some of the sayings the teacher used

Hmm, I'm gonna try to approach this logically...
I'd suppose the title of 'strongest house' (note, I said strongest, not hardest to fight') goes to one of the following:
Demon King Demon Army, triggered as early as possible so that they have the Shimazu brothers (DKDA)
Full Power Shimazu (after absorbing Mouri, Takuga and the Tanegashima houses)
Takeda with generals.
Out of those three, I'm not sure which is the hardest to beat. At least with Shimazu, you must've conquered Houjou (and hence be at war with Takeda) before you can fight them at their strongest point, but with the DKDA, I'm pretty sure you can fight them if you just sit on your ass in Owari and hit 'end turn' over 100 times while desperately trying to survive being attacked from Ashikaga and Hara or just feed the monkey too much.
Actually, I suppose that's the best answer I can be bothered to get. There's way too many variables here, so I'd have to make assumptions about how intelligently the player is playing but at least if you're playing suicidally bad, I'd reckon the DKDA is the hardest of the lot. In the worst case scenario, you'll be fighting them and Hara simultaneously. Not even 5 Permits would save you.
If we're assuming intelligent play however...gimme some time to think and I'll post on it.

I'm also gonna have to assume that you're going for the optimal type of victory against the house, i.e. rather than wasting resources fighting the Tenshi Sect, you just ignore them until you can vassal them post Temple Event.
Firstly, let's list all the people who are always total pushovers and not even try to rank them:
Tenshi Sect (as above).
Hara varies by difficulty, if you're taking any bonuses then they're pushovers, if you're on 5 Star No Bonus, you're just gonna vassal them. So either way they're easy.
Iga? Intelligent play would have you not touch them until after the temple, which would eventually add up to mean that you just duel Inukai and take them. I can't even remember how hard their castle battle is, I'll take Inukai's utility over the 5 SAT and wasted fans from battles.
Asai-Askura
Akashi
Imagawa
Uesugi (just use Rance intelligently)
So... the remainder.
I wouldn't rank Hojou or Tanegashima as pushovers, but their probably the weakest remaining here
Shimazu is easy if you don't let them get to full power, which intelligent play means you won't do anyway.
Takeda isn't so bad if you beat them before the generals appear, but hey, they're still tough.
The Mikos and Tokugawa both have tough final battles, but at least Tokugawa can be made easy (capture people, although that can be tough).
Ashikaga was probably the hardest part of my No Bonus run, either that or the Miko castle.
Takuga and Mouri aren't too tough by the time most people face them, come to think of it, Takuga borders on pushover.
The Demon Army is undeniably tough, but you should be at your strongest by the time you face them, so intelligent play says that they should be too bad.
I really don't know where to place One-Eyed. I often find that the hardest part is the Rance vs Masamune fight. Due to permits I usually just sit back and wait until I've beat them, so in the end they're just two average castle battles.

Final ranking?
I'd say Miko>Tokugawa, on the basis that they're both just tough castles, but one can be (tediously) made easy and the other can't. There's also the fact that you can afford to wait for Senhime, while you probably want Natori as soon as possible.
One-Eyed is two average castles and a tough boss fight. Intellegent play would have you ready for the boss fight.
Miko>Tokugawa>One-Eyed
Due to permits and it being end game, I'd argue Shimazu is just 4 easy castles.
Miko>Tokugawa>One-Eyed>Shimazu.
Playing intelligently, Takeda is 7 tough battles on lower than usual resources, which must be done in 3 turns. That's tough, but not so bad when you ought to have stuff like Uruza, Kenshin, Dousan, Senhime and others by this point.

The DA depends on route, but their castles are still a bitch, certainly not Miko-tier, but still tougher than One-Eyed, and you can't Permit them on True either. At least you've got all the time you need to beat them... all though I'm still not sure where they rank in relation to Takeda and Tokugawa.

I guess sweet, sweet 50% All Guard (60% if you got a lucky Int Skillbook) is really strong when you just reload the battle every time it doesn't block everything you wanted. Definitely worth the 4 NP cost.
