The only amiibo figures and cards you really need are the special characters, to unlock them in game. It feels like a scam on Nintendo's part, creating a form of DLC and locking it behind an item you cannot even use unless you pay another $20 or already own a N3DS(XL). There is a way to modify a specific pattern for only a specific person to become the new owner of it.
If you have the personal id # of the character, you can modify the pattern file so that it matches the character, create a qr, and then that character can scan the qr and have it be registered as their own. To obtain the personal id # you need to scan a qr created exclusively by that character and find the personal id # in the file.
Obviously this can only be done through hacking means, or you can use a simple pattern editing tool I suppose.
