Crystal in particular is good for new players. More health and a reflective shield is a good crutch for newbies, while you can invest in a more aggressive setup (Throne Butt + Gamma Guts + Sharp Teeth + Scarier Face + Juggernaut, Extra Feet is optional, additional weapon mutations to accommodate your loadout) when you're more experienced with the game.
Pick up Melting when you're more experienced with the game. The 2hp thing is a turn-off for a lot of people, but some of the furthest runs have been done with melting players for a reason. Rogue is also a fun choice, no matter what people say on the matter. She just requires a bit more of an investment on your part to get her down.
Plant is also fun, but I personally don't like using it. Not my playstyle.
Try not to take crutch mutations. Boiling Veins is useful if you're using explosive weapons often, but don't take it with the idea in mind of protecting you from enemy explosions. A very small number of enemies deal incendiary damage, and most of the ones that do deal it when they die (and explode). Not to say it's a bad mutation or anything, just that it's a waste of a slot if you're not planning on toting explosives.

Yes and clearing bullets helps you dodge. Think about this. You're at the palace and there's a a swarm of green bullets coming at you from pretty much all sides. With the Portal Strike you can just clear out a pathway through the storm and get to safety easily.

I even got the Golden Frog Pistol! I think I only made it as far in that loop because I had the lightning hammer to back me up, I think it's a great melee weapon that doesn' cost any energy.

Why would you want to use an Energy Sword over the Lightning Hammer? At least with Lightning Hammer you have the electricity to deal with smaller enemies like maggots, rats, and even assassins who sneak up in the crowd.

Energy Sword deals 44 damage with laser brain, Lighting hammer deals around 22, sometimes less, sometimes more.
You can take them out with the E Sword easily too.
