Well, when the app makes the emunand it automatically clones your sysnand to it. That's why after this everyone ends up with linked nands. Unlinking means formatting either of them so they'll be independent. Formatting the sysnand is the best because all your fun will be done in emunand anyway.

Yes. If you truly want to format EmuNAND, go for it. But here's why you're doing something retarded:
1. Given that you want to maintain CFW/EmuNAND access, your SysNAND is stuck at 9.2 forever.
2. Because of that, you can't get into the eShop without really silly hacks that have a potential of bricking if you don't do them right.
3. Because of that, you can't update your legimately bought games unless you download pirate update .cias, which will require you to use CFW to play the games afterwards.
4. Because of being stuck at 9.2, games and games with updates that require higher versions won't work. And that's just about everything released in 2015 and onwards.
But yes, if you install TinyFormat in EmuNAND, it will format EmuNAND and keep all of your shit intact on SysNAND. Just keep in mind that you're making a mistake.

I'm not sure if this is a problem people run into. I've tried to update my n3ds firmware using cakes.
I'll load cakes, it'll say it's configuring the home menu, it restarts and boots into cakes again, and the stream goes red. I'm 100% positive I'm in the right firmware now

I wouldn't be surprised if the .rsf was actually fucked in that regard, I think it was copy-pasted from somewhere else and I don't know what region flags makerom uses by default.

Okay, finally done with downgrading and installing CFW. Big thanks to everyone who was helping me out here. I still have one last question though: I have a fresh Reinand install and the stuff I needed to get CFW working in the first place. What do I need just to pirate stuff for now? I though I just throw my CIA files on the SD and install them via FBI on my emunand. But I keep hearing about bigblue and stuff, so I guess there are a bunch of programs I should install before jumping into filling my backlog?
