Not him but, no.

Planning a mission in BMS would be equivalent to planning a tactical engagement.

Planning a package in BMS implies you're setting up a flight or a combination of flights in the middle of a larger context, in this case, the dynamic campaign, to do something, say, strike some position, do an OCA strike against an airbase, etc etc, to help the conflict.

If I had to make an analogy to DCS I'd say it would be equivalent to planning a flight in the middle of an ongoing mission.

It would be a nonsense comparison, since BMP3 has very good atgms and is way better a long range. But i can tell you BMP3 would still come out on top. Very easy!
higher rof autocannon with the same HE value
+ secondary gun
+ lower price

It would perform similarly to the BMP-1D.

Poland's 12 MiG-29s (3 of which were only trainers) were not delivered until late 1989-1990. They're OOTF by a few months as the timeframe is the week of July 21st, 1989. In addition, the few MiG-29s they did have were strictly CAP and thus do not show up in the strike fighter list.
Most of Poland's MiG-29s are actually ex-luftwaffe MiG-29Gs delivered after the end of the cold war.

How the fuck do you take on a formation of F-15s in any Russian jet? 1 on 1 it's easy to juke them and then rape them in WVR, but against multiple F-15s you'll always get slapped by his two other wingmen, even if you're on one's tail. Doesn't help that the R-27 series is absolutely useless while AMRAAM eats flankers for breakfast.

Never said it wasn't a meme tactic. It can work against multiple sometimes but any engagement against multiple F-15s will always have you at a disadvantage unless you have a vastly superior force.

Don't forget that missiles follow targets perfectly with no tracking delays and no optimization of intercept route depending on remaining total energy

A missile will correct for even barrel rolls where the target maintains the same heading causing the missile to burn energy attempting to follow the target when there is no change in direction of travel.

If I remember correctly, they don't give you access to any of the tools you'd need to determine your own position, so auto-marking yourself is necessary. You are right though, I'm surprised they mark enemy boats. Is there another option somewhere? I know for SH5 all of the map options aren't with the realism settings but in the map settings.

>>
>>128337070
It's a little difficult to compare a subsim game to a flight simulator. Basically you can hop between the different tasks on a sub or let your crew do the work for you. Most of the games have a modeled hydrophone system (although SH5's is bugged and needs a community patch), maps and charts to mark enemies and determine firing solutions, periscopes and the associated knobs for entering target information, and deck guns (which are pretty arcady). The real fun in the game for me come from IDing targets with the periscope by referencing books, determining target heading and speeds with a stop watch and angular measurements, and waiting that extremely long minute while you see if your torpedo was on target. Enemy boats have subsystems modeled, so you can shoot for the engines to disable or the ammo caches to make a big explosion. Unfortunately, SH5 has a HP model for enemy ships, but that can be modded.

In terms of avoiding detection, I think all the games model the thermal layer, and account for battery power, oxygen levels, and compressed air. The subs themselves also have damage models.
>>
>>128334256

I am probably not looking in the right place then.

Like I said, I don't mind my own position to be drawn in, simply because the game doesn't support that sort of navigation manually (triangulation at night would be very cool for instance).

I just want the enemies to not appear on the map so I have to determine everything myself, glad to hear I am mistaken and that I can indeed switch it off.

>I just want the enemies to not appear on the map so I have to determine everything myself, glad to hear I am mistaken and that I can indeed switch it off.
Thats possible to turn off. Under the realism settings in the campaign before you go on a mission.
>>
>>128333516
>Why?
Because you didn't disable contact update and you're the captain, not the whole goddamn crew, determining your position should be the navigation/observation officers' job. If you want the enemy icons to be still active but not 100% accurate play NYGM.

>>128339790
>the game doesn't support that sort of navigation manually
If does if you mod it.

Also 100% realism is fucking retarded as it disable periscope stabilizing.
>>
>>128337070
Modding the fuck out of them is mandatory with every installment:
SH3 has Living Silent Hunter 3 if you want to just have fun, GWX for a nice albeit ancient middle ground mod, NYGM if you're hardcore. You'll have to install other mods on top of those too (like HSIE's hardcoded fixes, a GUI that isn't total shit and tribute to manual targeting), look in the second to last thread for a small list I wrote. Or maybe I'll dig it up later, crosslink it here and maybe make a pastebin if I can be bothered with it, but only about SH3, I'm not too acquainted with SH4 and fuck SH5 as it's still buggy even with mods.

>>128338207
>I think all the games model the thermal layer
SH3 doesn't in vanilla.
>>
>>128341748
I left periscope stabilization enabled, disabling it is actually removing realism, no matter what the game tells you.

and are there mods that model celestial navigation?
>>
>>128342267
I would definitely be interested in having something organized for SH3. I've really only played 5 and would be glad to sacrifice some visual fidelity for an overall better experience. Tracking down the 'right' mods on subsim has been too great a barrier to entry for me though.

>>128342391

The arkan is fantastic at bradley raping. It kills anything 7AV and below in one hit, which includes prickly things like M8 AGS and ADATS.

It' the cheapest 2800 ATGM thrower in the game, and while the stabilizer is bad, it does have one. Compared to other IFV's it gets 50% more ATGM's to shit out.

You might not think it's a big deal, but a gaggle of BMP-3's shitting ATGM's at you from 2800 is a pain to deal with.
>>
>>128360261
Full Spectrum Warrior isn't actually a shooter, it's like an over the shoulder squad command game. Honestly it ends up playing more like a puzzle game because of the way it works. It's a game I find more "academically" game than actually fun, mostly because it's such a novel and unique approach to this kind of game.

They also included a mission of the US Army version of the game as a bonus, which was a little different and designed specifically for training soldier tactics.

It was a game for the OG Xbox though. I don't know if it got a PC port or anything.

the speed is what makes arkan a good atgm and the tow 2 a mediocre one. Tow 2 is only good on recon bradley which can survive the long-ass travel time, on anything else it's trash.

fast travel speed can even make something like chumat, which you'd think is trash because of its range, quite good. Its lack kills the tow

How fucking new to sub shit are you. If you don't have the right mods going in shallow waters is detrimental to you rather than destroyers. And please don't tell me you spent 4 days submerged.

Also why in the hell would you crashdive unless you're sure that the destroyer already saw you? In cases like that you go silent, dive until you're at like 40 meters, and only then start changing course. Also you got really lucky that the torps hit AND actually exploded.

>>128379965
Assuming you use mods like GWX or NYGM, both with HSIE and Stiabler's hardcoded fixes:

Magnetic fuses are best if not used AT ALL in SH3. Keels seem to very rarely break in two, so if the torp detonates your target will more often than not end up with sailing very low on the water, but without sinking (which means retarded deck gun attacks or having to waste another fish). You can't even set the "historically correct" depth for breaking ships' backs either because the torpedoes will not detonate if you do that. They also have the tendency of prematurely exploding if you fire them when there is bad weather (if you use the mods I listed, that's basically the only viable fuse if there is bad weather: if you fire the torpedo and a too shallow depth it will breach and sink, and the depth that causes the torp to breach is dependent on the wind's speed). And I'm talking about post norwegian campaign magnetic fuses. Pre norwegian campaign magnetic fuses might as well not exists.

All in all you're much better off if you just use impact fuses (those will almost always cause the target to list and eventually sink, even in shallow waters).
There are some exceptions I can think of such as:
1. You're GODLY with your firing solutions and you know the exact location of your target's boiler room. A magnetic fuse torpedo that detonates right below the boiler is practically guaranteed to take care of every civilian ship with one shot, but as I said you have to be REALLY good with your solutions.
2. Your target is a heavily armored battleship. In that case aim at the main guns. If the solution is good and you're lucky you can cause secondary explosions. You usually have some leeway with the solution too.
3. You stumbled upon a sailing boat/a fishing vessel or a fucking sampan. Pepper it with the AA gun then ram the piece of shit, that way you'll not only satisfy Poseidon but also get your tonnage.

Admitting that you use t-62's tells a lot about your skill level m8.

4. You got yourself in a really tight situation, for instance it's late in the war, and you attacked a convoy while there's clear weather. The destroyer escort just won't fucking give up, they will rarely get fooled by your decoys, and maybe to top that off you can't go too deep because you took hull damage.
BUT, you have an acoustic guided torpedo. Why would you set it to magnetic fuse if they're unreliable? Because by the point you get those torps magnetic detonators will reliably work in good weather, and they will detonate even if they get close enough to the propellers (destroyers can easily outrun acoustic torpedoes because their speed is intentionally limited), and your goal isn't to sink the destroyer that is depth charging you - crippling its speed or disabling its engine outright is more than enough.

If you decide to use one of them, you should do the following: set it to run as shallow as the wind speed will allow it to (in the case we are considering there will barely be any wind at all), set the fuse to magnetic, go silent (you should already be in silent mode anyway unless you took damage and have to fix important shit or pump out water, and if you're reloading your torpedoes underwater while being hunted you're a fucking retard), fire it, VERY slowly dive to 25 meters, change course while keeping your speed very low (manually set it to 1 knot, any more than that and the torp could very well start following you rather than its intended target).

Also crash diving is a sure way to give away your position to nearby destroyers. I tend to use it only if I visually spot a plane or I bump in an enemy ship while sailing during really limited visibility.

Who wanted SEAD times?
I took a break from my bomber tests to do them for you.

Ikr?
My experiments might be kinda flawed though. The times are based on them destroying one target, so those that fire 2 missiles at a time are going to have pretty high times.
