My first impression is that it's kind of like Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean and/or Fire Emblem where they just pick them up along the way and then they're just "there" and they barely have any impact on the "main" story.

The gacha characters are basically characters who drop their responsibilities to come adventure with Gran and the gang but aren't necessarily always on-board the ship with him. This is just from my perspective but it's worth a shot, especially if you liked the old school Final Fantasy games (this game gave me FFVI) vibes, and that's because they recruited two key staff members who worked on FFVI and FFIX, also Nobou Uematsu composed some of the game's songs as well and you can definitely hear his "style" in them.
