>What in the fuck is this
/indie/ is the general for all indie games, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Bastion, Machinearium, Braid, Limbo, Axion Verge, Guacamele, The Desolate Hope, Sonic Dreams Collection, Doritoe Galaxy, etc.

Mobile or consoles, flash or unity, freeware or early acess. This place is a home for the indie game community and indie games that don't have a home. So be free to talk and share all your hidden gems, forgotten games and starving devs here.

>Can I talk about games that already have a general?
We mostly discuss games that are not popular enough for their own threads (since they have no other home in /vg/), however, all indie games are allowed. So talk about them if you want, but don't overdo it since you already have other generals for that.

>How can I contribute?
All we need right now is people to talk about their loved indies, so don't be afraid to post, bump and reply your fellow anons. Also we're looking for anons to make new pastebins/wikis/images and update the ones already made. Besides that, don't forget to play our !!!!GAME OF THE WEEK!!!! and other indie games to have lots of joy and to make more discussions to our general. And please give lots of feel, love, kind and nice to everyone.

>WHERE ARE THE GAMES
See our !!!!!GAME OF THE WEEK!!!!! in the next post.
Also this pastebin: http://pastebin.com/ZbG0JPSn

>TO DO:
-Do more wikis/images/pastebins (Platformer, Shmups, First-Person, Mobile, Flash/Browser based, etc) and update them to not overwork the Compendium anon
-Create an easy way to know about upcoming games, ludums, jams and comps (aka make News more useful)
-Pray for the return of TIGDB

You literally have to jump to beat the first sector, though i guess you meant jump AND shoot, which would be correct.

That's also my only gribe with Iji btw, i'm not much into coverbased combat, but that didn't stop me from beating the game thrice.

There are a couple of indie horror games I played a few years ago, and I've been thinking about them but I can't remember their titles or where to find them. Maybe someone here can read my mind.

In particular, I'm thinking of two titles. They're both horror-themed and they have really slick pixel art. I feel like they may have come from a TIGsource competition.

One is about a guy lost in the darkness undergound, and you have to follow a moving light and stay close to light sources or be lost forever. It turns out that the light is from a giant angler fish.

The other is a platformer where the top half of the world is the land of the living, and the bottom half is the land of the dead, where everything is upside down. It's possible to cross between them by jumping through a place where there's no ground, and you'll slingshot to the other side. I remember the way that the colors and the music changed was well done.

Ring any bells?

Nevermind I'm dumb. Suits is an RPG Maker game so you can just access the music from the game folder. The one I'm talking about is called Treasonable Behavior or SinisterSuitsMe.

I might upload all of it to soundcloud later if anyone wants it or I'm not too lazy.

>>
>>127885442
The game has a few references to OFF including enemies that have their own songs. However the only thing that he music copies from OFF is the name, nothing else.
>>
>>127852482
I played this game for a long time but the lack of objectives (and people with play with) made it rather...dull. But if it is still being worked on, even slowly, I'm hype.
>>
>>127885584
References? He straight up includes Mortis and the Batter in the game pal, I know he didn't copy the game, but going so far on the referential scale to make a slightly altered music name is a bit too far when mixed with everything else, even if just for me.
>>
>>127885738

Just got to Area 3 of OFF.

Game is pretty decent so far. Not entirely sure what all is going on in the story, as it seems to just be a really goofy world, though I'm starting to put some things together.

Music is my favorite part of it so far, and the atmosphere of the world is a close second. I'm not quite as pulled in as I was with other games but it's definitely a fun play.

There is a big variety in skill needed for specific jumps. The hardest are the ones for the greek alphabet symbols and the hidden under the world extra levels. Generally you have access to every location once you are in chapter 3 except for specifically shut down areas you have to circle around. The key is often to switch bewteen ball and human form during jumps

Every media references stuff the artists experienced.
You think people just did drawings of biblical themes out of thin air?
Of course there is always a limit to how much pop culture reference you can shoove into a single piece of art.
>>
>>127931520
I think there's a marked difference between a work of art subtly incorporating biblical themes and a video game making you fight a ghost called "Mortis" after meeting "Batter" and then proceeding to resolve a console war between two literal peasants and confront a character named Nik Beard who senses your presence through his "fedoria euphoria" and unsheathes his twin katanas to prove himself before his body pillow

It's okay Suits dev, I liked your game regardless, it was a palatable three hours
>>

>>
>>127932256
Eh, Suits is chock full of references, as full as you can be without literally copyright infringing, but that is fine because it doesn't really take itself seriously, it's one big spoof that reminded me of Kingdoms of Loathing somewhat. It wasn't really as jarring as say Undertale using twitter memes as a writing crutch because it never pretends to be anything but wacky and referential.

They have a sound cue, and there's also some red mist around were they're going to fire. (or is that after they fire?).

Plus you should usually be careful around new enemies you're not familiar with, unless you were out in the open due to a bad spawn, in which case then that sucks.

Also Crystal's shield doesnt work on the lasers, just so you dont have to find out on your own.

>>
So just finished Lisa The Painful a couple days ago. How many other people got frustrated with how Lisa gave you options on a very simple good/evil level with their being no payoff for it at the end of the day?

I felt I explained it better in the last thread but I felt that giving me choices when it had no effect on the plot annoying. I understand that the choices can keep your partners alive or not but I'm talking on a plot level not gameplay.

Lisa has such an fun world and it's genuinely interesting but it feels like the game doesn't want me to enjoy it.
>>
>>127959530
What, you're not gonna post your victory anon? I already know you won.
>>
>>127960757
I was fine with it. That's kind of the point - the choices are truly painful with no "best" choices and the world is ultimately deterministic. You're a nobody, a small fish in a sea of dipshits. Your choices don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. The game constantly rewards you with nothing but a progression of suffering; there's no stick or carrot, only stick. The ultimate choice doesn't even penalize you gameplay-wise, but I actually spent some time thinking whether I should sacrifice my leveled party or Buddy's nipple.

I don't feel like it should be compared to Undertale or any kind of WRPG morality systems, it's its own thing. If anything it's an actual-factual deconstruction of a morality system, as opposed to Undertale, a deterministic one.
>>
>>127960757
Isn't that part of the charm though? That at the end of the day, no matter what choices you make, you've still done the wrong thing?

Remember that it's explained via plot- Joy makes one's innermost desires come out and for Brad, that was getting back Buddy, no matter what choices were made along the way, there was only his desire at the end of the day. This also explains his priority shift when Marty was introduced again.
>>
>>127960757
There arent enough huge choices for there to be a big difference in the end

Most of the choices in game only effect yourself and your party members

See I can agree with some of those points, I get the idea that game has a very bleak outlook and it's not scared to keep with that vision no matter how dark it gets.

However, I wouldn't call Brad a nobody, well he's a nobody in terms of importance. But he's easily shown to be one of the strongest men in the world.

I agree that having a incredible cheerful ending would have been really out of touch with the rest of the feeling of the game. Just a small nod for making the difficult but kinder choices is all I wanted.

Nobody is literally Brad's job title. He might actually be the strongest man in the world but the game's theme is about a literal nobody struggling with drug addiction and parental complexes. There's no saving the world and defeating ancient evils here. And I actually wouldn't want it any other way, and think it makes LISA an incredibly unique video game story if nothing else.

Yea I'm not trying to say that Lisa wasn't a unqiue or fun game I guess I just felt a bit cheated out of given options that at times didn't matter.

But that feeling of lack of control is most likely in place there on purpose. It's not the most clear point I have, but I guess the game made me frustrated with brad's actions.

LISA is all about making you emotionally frustrated and feeling the lack of control, yeah. Dingaling is actually on record saying Buddy is his least favorite character in the series and is a little shit, yet he made her the Joyful's main protag. It's all about making you uncomfortable and distraught instead of congratulated, as is the case with all other vidya out there. It's certainly not for everyone, but it be like it does.

How is Joyful compared to Pain? Is it worth the five to pick it up or is it best to just wait for a steam deal?

I've heard that it has timing attack and I generally enjoy those gimmicks since I enjoy rhythm games. I haven't heard much about the Joyful.
>>
>>127963582
The thing with Joyful is that Ding didn't make it it's own game as he thought it was too small to be called one, so he made it DLC
In my opinion it's very good and I enjoyed it, especially without Joy, but the story is "Buddy is edgy as FUCK".
take what you want from that
Also no party members except rando for a bit

The timing attacks are kinda tacked on, the system isn't very deep but has more tactile involvement than Painful, still. The gameplay suffers from a severe lack of options however because it's very linear and story-driven and you only have one party member for most of it. There are a few challenging fights, though.

The story has people very divided. Buddy is a massive shit of a kid and everyone fucking dies. Some think it shits all over the Painful, others think it was a decent closure to the overarching story.

It's mostly not worth 5 bucks because it's a 3-hour DLC with limited gameplay, but worth a sale buy just for the closure.

Many seem to hate it but I honestly thought it was fine. I don't have an issue with Buddy being unlikable, since that's the point and I'm not autistic and can seperate myself from a PC and I didn't mind the combat. It's boring and way too easy (pic related) and there's no party management, but I thought the actual story was worth it.

Well, the Remake is supposed to be quite different from the original so that both are worth playing.

But then again HD is pretty much the original with a better translation and some slight touches to the graphics, so if you had issues with the controls I don't know whether it's worth it.

Though I don't know how the controls are incomprehensible exactly, what issues did you have?

Everything that lights up when you look at it can be interacted with via the E key. Other than that's there's not many buttons really, and they're all listed in the options menu and pretty self-explanatory.

Also, you don't need to worry too much about time except on the first day or when you want to beat the game perfectly (which I wouldn't advise on the first playthrough, just go with the flow, the game's all about making you feel desperate).

So if you want an immersive (and emotianlly draining) experience I'd say go for HD.
If you run into any troubles with controls or something I'll probably be here to help you out

I really appreciated that there *wasn't* anything like that. You can do the right thing or you can do what's good for you, and the right thing doesn't have some big secret payoff in the end (unless you count Terry becoming a strong party member if you don't sacrifice him and level him up).

You know how in Bioshock, saving the sisters ultimately pays off more than harvesting them? That's bullshit. In Lisa, you can do the right thing, but there's no pat on the back for it. It's just you and the desert, and no one is going to save you.

Did anyone else feel like some of the backstory of Lisa was just tacked on? Like Sticky's dad. It made sense that he was the reason Brad and Sticky got a long, but it didn't make any sense that he was still alive and was a capable fighter and had claws for hands. Where did that come from?

Also, in the Pain ending, I don't see how Brad being Rando's dad fits with anything. Brad was motivated by guilt and the prospect of redemption when he took in Buddy (and he said it's his second chance, not his third chance). So why didn't Brad feel any guilt, or really any emotion, about abandoning Rando? It kind of felt like Dingaling couldn't think of what to put for the secret ending so he made something up.

Just replayed the Joyful, I didn't notice the first time around that whether or not you have Buddy trust Rando near the beginning of the game has an effect on event where you find him hanging from barbed wire.

If you choose to hold on, she drops him harder than Benny from the Walking Dead either way, but if you trust Rando, when you go talk to him, the "red organ" background shows up, and Buddy completely spazzes out, calling Rando "Brad" as she mercilessly stabs him to death. But if you don't trust Rando, Buddy is much more calm and merciful, saying she'll finish what Brad started and puts him out of his misery with a slice of the throat. No red organ background.

Also, did anyone find Rando's justification for not being on the list kind of weird? I think he said something about "nobody bothers his army," but if that's the reason, how come Mr Beautiful is on the list?

Even if you say that he isn't considered a warlord anymore because he got his asskicked by Brad, it should have at least shown up crossed off, since Hawk Holliwood and Buffalo got their names crossed off but kept their lives. I have the feeling it was kind of a weak justification Dingaling came up with to make the story go the way he wanted. Otherwise Buddy would have known that it wasn't necessary to kill a warlord to get his name off the list.
>tfw no Joyful where you you could just force Lardy, Vega, and Mr B to fight for you Disgaea style.
>tfw no Gary the Hot Soup or Green Ranger party members

Did anyone find it kind of amusing that Chest, the merchant of the game says "oy vey" when you kill him? Maybe it's just too much 4chan on the brain.

Rando not being on the list made perfect sense to me. His army is above and beyond every warlord gang out there, he's as close as Olathe had to a centralized government as it gets. He could have also demanded his name not be kept on the list because he doesn't want to participate in a petty popularity contest, and everybody complied. Mr. Beautiful was on there because he needed some legitimacy to keep his community unmolested and mark his territory, Rando didn't need that.

The only warlord who I felt iffy about being on the List is Big L. He doesn't seem to have much of an army, just a few schmucks hanging out under his house, and just minds his own business like a genocidal hermit, much like Mike Satan. I can't imagine him being very involved with Olathe's politics.

Buddy's decision to kill the warlords has nothing to do with the fate of those who were already crossed out. She didn't know that. It's just that violence is all she knows. Also ultimately Buffalo is dead (we don't know whether he was crossed out when he left his position or was killed by Brad) and Hawk is dead if we're going by Pain Mode.

>Did anyone find it kind of amusing that Chest, the merchant of the game says "oy vey" when you kill him?
Lol, I didnt know that. Purely intentional on Ding's part if that's the case though.

Casual reminder that in the Salvation Rangers scene, Black has a screeching monkey while everyone else has typical shit.
