How do you feel about low graphics options?

Nowadays the lowest setting often barely looks any different from maximum.
Are you comfortable completely shitting up your artistic vision in order to let toaster people play, or do you have a certain standard you won't go below?
>>
>>126526037
Put graphics options into your game, they're fun to mess around with
>>
>>126525868
Most of the time I give up is because I spend like years working on graphism and that don't work...

>>

If you create options make them as transparent as possible.

Lots of content. Isaac has >300 items. Most roguelites released that try to do something like Isaac don't go over 100. There's a reason why Isaac has so much longevity and it's just pure amount of content and work put into it.

I didn't mean not having graphic options, but rather how bad you'd be willing to make your game look to accommodate people.

With some AAA games the options make fuck all difference and sometimes the performance is about the same too.

I'm trying to understand how niche games get popular

Take Yume Nikki for example. How did it get such a huge cult following despite being a simple RPGMaker game? Did the developer shill it everywhere or was it released quietly? I'm guessing it being free played some role but usually when I see a free game I assume it's most likely shit
>>
>>126528080
>post progress on blog
>some weird person randomly browses gaming blogs looking for original games
>stumbles upon Niche Project
>links it to friends and some small communities
>it eventually gets on a popular imageboard or on Reddit
>eventually, everyone who are interested in this particular kind of game know about it

As long as you post progress somewhere outside AGDG and push forward your strong points, you should be fine
>>
>>126528080
Yume Nikki was unique, intriguing and, most importantly, a Japanese doujin game from the time before the sanctity of Japanese doujin games was defiled. It's the same as Cave Story.
It's not a form of success that you can achieve anymore.
>>

I honestly think for games like this, the biggest let down is finding out about the twist
there was some unity masterpeice(tm) game that was a horror game disguised as a cheasy haunted house, seemed gay from afar but they spoiled the twist of it actually getting creepy or spooky in the steam trailer and for that reason alone I can't be arsed to play it
imagine people telling friends about your game "yh dude, I know it looks dull but trust me, just play it"
I think, if you do your crazy shit ending it will work i you keep it super ont he dl

Kinda sad that VR is championed mainly by lewdshitters and corporate shills, it opens new doors for a lot of game genres and blurs the line between movies and games.

Hope it doesn't flop and end up being yet another sex toy for neckbeards/weebs or a marketing tool for AAA studios.

das it mane
I know it's a bit of a poor example as when the game "ramps up" and actually becomes scary, it does a piss poor job of being scary, but the premise is still applicable, keep the twist, don't spoil it, don't hit at it

What genre of game do I make? Please no visual novel. started a small token game, progress for today
the idea is, any unlocked the cards from your library can be added to your deck (max 2 cards of each type), during the game you'll draw 4 cards each turn and chose which ones to play, shuffling the rest (if there're any) back into your deck. The cards are flat bonuses to you, which last until your next turn.

There's a ton of inconsistencies in gml. A lot of functions could be grouped a lot better with better wording.

I think the problem is once they add a function, months later everyone has written it into their game and everyone has gotten used to it.

Looking at the game maker bug tracker and the changelogs makes me not envy those in charge. The program's a goddamn behemoth to manage.

Terrain is data. Art is data. A level is data.
Code is not data. You can treat it as data sure, but flip one bit and the entire thing changes.
In terrain, if the height is slightly bigger, at one point, its not a big difference.
>>

Gameplay is not code, gameplay are the rulesets, which are transcribed into the code.

but you could have some gameplay "templates" which you can randomize, with randomized/generated variables affecting the gameplay

Or different functions, which can be called randomly with generated variables passed to them

Gameplay is data that we typically hardcode since the gameplay will never change in a game.

In games with fixed environments, the maps are hardcoded. In games with variable environments, maps are procedurally generated. You would just procedurally generate the gameplay by mashing templates together.

What you'd end up is something like a platformer where jump height, speed, etc are all randomized every time, which doesn't sound that fun.

The problem is kind of analogous to guessing which item is in the box that you can't see in.
And there are infinite amount of possible items.
When you generate a random item, the only way to check if it is correct, is to ask a real person.
If you create a bot that can play test your generated games and rate them, the problem gets slightly easier.
But you still need to check an infinite number of items which might not be related to each other at all.
Some problems you can't efficiently solve even with a good evaluation function, if the search space isn't favorable.

>>126536579
Yes, you can treat is as data, but the thing is, you can't really create logical bounds for the random generator.
With terrain you can just limit height, and its derivative to get a smooth terrain. Maybe add some random bumps here and there.

>something like a platformer where jump height, speed, etc are all randomized every time

eew, what a lack of imagination
you could have, for example, mini games which consist of cliking on stuff, moving around to avoid targets, with the controls/levels/possible movements generated

if you sit on a desk and brainstorm for one hour or so I'm sure you can come up with plenty of generated gameplay ideas

>ou can't really create logical bounds for the random generator
How come? how couldn't you limit mouse movement possibilities, define a set of input controls to choose from, limit interaction, etc?...

for example : if controls are mouse > chose between: 4direction, vertical, and horizontal movement > choose between avoid obstacles/click objects > define movement of said objects > define if it's sidescrolling or 1 screen, etc...

If there is a finite number of possible games you can generate, its not really randomly generated.
What you're suggesting is to create a fixed number of games and pick a random one each time.
Maybe a combination of multiple of them, with their parameters random every time.

On the other hand, maybe there is a finite amount of possible acceptable gameplays in the search space in the first place.
Can you think of a unique gameplay that has never been invented? Kind of hard right?
But you can generate a random acceptable terrain that has never existed before easily.

Most games have a virtual environment where things happen. It can be 2D or 3D.
But a valid game is a math game where an equation is thrown at you and you need to calculate it.
A game like this doesn't even have an environment.

But really freesound is free. If anyone ever gives you shit for using something of theirs they posted on there, point out to them that the website is named FREEsound.

Most of them are amateurs with cheap Zoom recorders anyway.
I would respect the people who do good recordings and have put entire libraries on there, because they are doing gods work, but not for the asshats that record their lightswitches with internal laptop microphones.

why are you implying those games will be finite? You can have a finite number of "templates" with an infinity of variation in between them. For any kind of procgen content, at one point you end up having a limited number of possibilities, you can only have pseudo-random, even when generating a landscape.

> But you can generate a random acceptable terrain that has never existed before easily.

Well yeah, generating a terrain is definitely easier than generating gameplay, but it doesn't mean that generated gameplay is not an uninteresting idea, even if it's way harder to apply!

>On the other hand, maybe there is a finite amount of possible acceptable gameplays in the search space in the first place.

When you generate a terrain you are not trying to create something which "never existed before", you are trying to mimic in a very primitive way the way IRL landscapes appear. Your landscape has to follow some rules, like : there must be some ground, the height of the mountains cannot be totally random, etc...
So you are not creating a brand new type of landscape nobody never heard of!

Pseudo randomness doesn't need to be finite. It only means its deterministic in a way.
So if you know the seed, you can follow the algorithm and generate it yourself in exactly the same way.
But in practice yeah, there is a finite number of possible terrains because you're constrained by floating point calculations.
A lot of things would be fun and interesting, but they're just not doable.

That said, i think it could actually be possible to generate a random game if you constrain yourself very heavily.
Lets say the game will always be top down 2D and constrained by 2D physics.
You write a physics engine where each object ingame has a position, mass, velocity, friction, spin, etc.
When generating a game, you basically generate a bunch of object types (not actual objects).
Each one has a sprite, physics properties, behavior (this one is tricky), etc. attached to it.
You need winning and losing events attached to certain object types and interactions.
When you generate the object types, you then maybe do some clever analysis on how objects interact with eachother.
Based on that, you generate a map. That is, actual objects you spawn across your 2D world.
Of course you need to check if the map is actually winnable somehow.
And before you throw your player into this mess, you show him how a winning move looks.
