What I do know of tumblr is that it's reposting reposts of reposted reposts.
Then again, back in my day, there was no pixiv or tumblr or any of that shit. Japanese artists all had their own individual web-pages and had link exchanges and link rings, and non-japanese used deviantart once it appeared.

The difference between dA/pixiv and twitter/tumblr is that with the latter you can get your art in front of people who wouldn't visit art websites otherwise. Usually you wouldn't be on dA/pixiv if you were some kind of artist or enthusiast, and the means of finding your art would be only through your page, search, other people's favorites, some feature, etc. If you make something especially nice or helpful on twitter/tumblr, it can spread fairly quickly and can sporadically get attention again even if you've posted it months ago. Of course both has its pros and cons.I've had people who look for me during conventions exactly because some drawing spread around, so really I'm not complaining.
